  • The Boss KatanaI is a really versatile, great-sounding, and reasonably priced guitar amplifier. I normally use a Telecaster in my videos so I thought it might be useful to show how to dial in the sounds for different guitars. In this video, I start with the basic sound that we programmed in on the previous video • Boss Katana - Creating... and tweak the sound so it fits better for a single-coil guitar and in this case a Fender Stratocaster.
    The Studio Rats are core band members Paul Drew on guitar/production/mixing, drummer James Ivey and Dan Hawkins on bass. They collaborate with singers and musicians to produce radio-ready songs.

    No one has given as much useful information on the Katana in such a concise manner. Thank you, Paul.

    Another great video. I am gonna try this later on on my strat. But I do get the feeling that those dimarzio areas 58,58,61 that I have will need a lot more tweaking because they are really bright.

    For some time I've realized that single coils work in a special way with a good solid-state amp. The interaction between the pickups and the amp are just different than humbuckers. I' not saying one is better than the other. But, considering the built in noise gates you have in an amp like the Katana, the issue of 60 cycle hum can be pretty much nullified, enabling you to use true single coils without resorting to stacked or active single coils. I often used a friend's Gallien Kruger in the 80s because of how big and clear it made my strat sound, very much like Alex Lifeson's tone at the time which was a strat single coil tone through a GK. It was big, clear and had some great overdrive and harmonics. There was no built-in noise gate, so I used an external one.

    Hi Paul, again I love your video's. But can you tell me how you set the volume (master ) and power control on your amp (when using your basic clean ultimate patch). I'm using the katana live with (most times) a pedalboard. But I 'm still searching for a basic clean patch on band volume (blues/ blues rock band volume) Sometimes I 'm trying the variation but most of the times I think I'm better off without it. What do you suggest and is your katana in your studio loud? Or is the ultamite clean patch programmed at low volumes through studio monitors?
    Maby a video for a live basic patch on band volume?? (I know studio rats is for studio use in the first time but it would be very helpfull with your knowledge . Thanks again, Mike

    Hey Paul, my bridge still sounds too bright. What should I try adjusting first? Treble on the amp or what in the EQ? Trying for a warm blues rock sound.
    I just cant get a good sound for the bridge and neck at the same time. The neck sounds like it's playing through muffled cotton wool if I darken the bridge too much. I must be doing something wrong.... please help

    Will this EQ work with a 90's high distorted punk tone for a MIM Fender Player Plus (SSS) Strat with new noiseless pups? I'm trying to build a high gain/distortion POP-PUNK tone and I don't want to drown out our bass player and the other guitarist? Just got the Katana MKII 100 and I bought a MacBook Air specifically for this. It''s quite overwhelming at first... any suggestions would be greatly appreciated good sir!
    Edit: you and the other guy (forgot his name) have the best Katana channel on TH-cam IMHO. You're very concise about what you change and why you're changing it. I feel some channels hold back and give you just a piece of pie, while you offer the whole pie in many slices through your videos. Bravo on the content and I know your channel will blow up, the TH-cam algorithm can make you feel like your channel isn't growing but keep going, it is!

    why not just buy a humbucker guitar if you're going to dial out all the strat tone

    • @greg6162
      @greg6162 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      He's just cutting out the unpleasant extreme spike the mid-upper range. It just makes the guitar stay in the sweet spot of maybe a specific tone that maybe has some high gain or mid issues that cause it stand out or maybe if you're playing with a band or jamming you're stepping on someone's tonal toes? I've only been playing 7/months or so but I play in a band with guys at work that started as a 3/pc pop-punk band with just me as the guitarist, then we found another guy that plays guitar so on top of him having a spark 40w (it's stereo actually 20w) and then me having a 20w THR10II (really 10w) realized one.... these are not amps to be played with a full band outside with a drummer that hits like Travis Barker. The second thing is it's really easy for one guitarist to drown out another which he was doing to me. Well my Boss Katana MkII 100 arrives and I bring that to rehearsal and knowing how I was getting drowned out I made a conscientious effort to try and match his volume or slightly lower because I have a 12' speaker even though I was at only 50w and the master volume was maybe 2/10 I still drowned him out because my amp just produced fuller bigger mids and he was lost unless I really scooped the mids and butchered the tone. It's about keeping your sound on your space and not someone else's and by tuning EQ'ing your guitar you can do that easier and it makes the sound profile much better when you have other instruments beside yourself. I'm a beginner but playing with a live band you learn certain things a lot quicker. I'm sure there's more to it than just this but this was my experience which is a lot of trial and error. Also, my band mate needs to get a Katana mkII 50 at least. The spark and Yamaha THRII amps are amazing practice amps but with a live drummer you're struggling to hear each other at that low wattage, especially with those small 3-5' speakers. You might make an amazing tone at 0.5w bedroom volume but it changes once you give it real wattage and live volume. I found if you use Brown or Lead as a base for a tone you often have to dial back the gain the louder you go. I'm going to try and build a punk distortion tone using a clean channel and see if that gets better balanced breakup at higher volume like a tube amp. Also, I have a Fender Player Plus SSS Strat and an Epiphone Les Paul Custom and even though the Strat's come with noiseless pups (no 60 cycle hum) a great tone on one won't necessarily be great on the other and knowing that can help you play multiple guitars possibly with the same tone with a few EQ adjustments. It's a huge learning curve and process for me especially
