- The Boss Katana is a great sounding amp, for the price its an amazing sounding amp! In this video, we look at how to create (in my opinion) the best sound to build from. From this tone you'll be able to achieve any great sound just by adding the effects build into the Boss Katana mk1 or the Katana mk2. The Studio Rats are core band members Paul Drew on guitar/production/mixing, drummer James Ivey and Dan Hawkins on bass. They collaborate with singers and musicians to produce radio-ready songs.

Thanks Paul, I finally got round to plugging on to tone studio today and setting this up with my mk2 50 kat and tele. Love the tone and with my airstep kat I can bring the booster and fx in and out with no hassle! Awesome work sir

This was extremely helpful, the tone studio is a little intimidating when you're new to it. I just dialed in a great tone for Link Ray's Rumble with ease. Before I was having a hard time trying to get that "dry" but a little "wet" with some dirt on it sound he has on the original recording. This should help me greatly with building Surf Rock tones as well as I get to heavy handed with the distortion. Thanks!

This tone is really versatile and powerful sounding especially for blues.
Great lesson really helped. One tip, use the delay2 in tone studio (the one that is combined with the reverb) and you'll be able to save your actual delay button for other delay type stuff.

I’ve got both mark 1 and 2 100w for stereo link. Killer deals on Mark 1 bit the effects in mk2 are in another tier. Just unbelievable, plus it takes pedals though it doesn’t really need anything other than maybe adding a looper. Unless you use the USB interface into Logic Pro X.

Finally hooked my Katana up to tone studio today and been dialing in your patches, the tones I'm getting on my telecaster are amazing. The biggest plus of tone studio for me is the noise gate. I nearly sold my katana because of the horrific noise it would make at high gain but with the noise gate on and your patches i now love this amp and would never sell it.

After owning the Boss Katana Artist for soon 2 years, I only now realized you could go deeper into the settings with Tone Studio - I haven't seen the NOISE SUPPRESSOR before! My Ibanez and I thanks you, No more whitenoise \m/

Hello Paul. Great videos always. I have the Katana 100 MK 1 and in the Librarian app that I use, you can move the order of the effects in the chain or create a custom one. Just wondered if you tried that. Thanks again.
I’ve put this on my katana 50 and sounds great thanks. I have more insight into this amp from you then anywhere else. I have boss gt1 and and wondered if I put it in the pre amp slot behind, would the katana eq ( as in frequency cuts) still be active ?
Just tried this tone out. VERY good. I may try swapping the OD for a fuzz but so far loving it. With 2 expression pedals hooked up to the mk2 head as well with one for volume and the other controlling gain you can do a lot with this.

Hi Paul, great tone on my 50Mk2 and Vintage SG. In the video you mention preferring the Mod Before the Booster in the chain, but it was not available, when I looked into this, it was available. Is this part of the recent update? It made a big difference to the tone. Thanks again
The Mk I has some important limitations, i can´t get booster and mod at the same time. I tried using the Fx to set the comp but it muffles the sound. Still, getting some great tones from similar settings. Thanks a lot!

The only things I wish Boss had done was made a way you could scroll through the 3 different colored settings on the efx etc... via a foot switch and also be able to work the gain in the amps via an expression pedal... If they had those two things this rig would be a weekend warriors dream :)
I opted for the Katana Artist MKII after spending 3 weeks with a Fender Mustang GTX100. Happy that I made the exchange and very thankful to you guys for the instructive videos (and the patches that I "invested" in - they're great). Will you consider some Artist-developed patches to tweak for the Waza Craft Greenback speaker? Just curious.

Hey, great work. I was wondering if you are using the simple version or the 2X12'' speaker version of the Boss Katana 100 Watt MKII amp. I want to buy one, but I'm not sure if the extra cost and dimensions of the latter are worth.
You have Boss's recommendation about the Volume and Master Volume knob backwards... They rec having the VOLUME knob all the way up to 10 and using the master to adjust the actual volume in real time so the pre amp that the volume knob controls as the pre amp adds a lot of amp character not the master knob.
Sounds great! Parametic eq engaged here as well?
If you use FX Floorboard instead of BTS, you can put that compressor at the front of the chain. It allows customisable signal chains by drag and drop.

I'm a bit late to this but now a proud owner of a 100 mk2 and an Epi LP 1959 standard. Learnt a great deal from this katana series. Could you do one more to dial in Gibson PAF tone? Is it possible to get close with a Katana and Epi? Thanks.

Hi Paul, when you use this tone with the booster and other effects, how well does your guitar clean up when you back off the volume?? I have noticed that my Gibson Les Paul does not clean up very well when i use tones in the Katana made up from the Crunch, Lead or Brown amp models. However, if i use a clean model with a touch of reverb and by Friedman BE-OD in front of the amp my Les Paul cleans up beautifully with the volume. Would love your thoughts??

How do i use booster and comp at the same time?
I couldn't find a way of turning on compression without the booster going off. Great tutorial btw. Even without compression it gave great results
I have the same issue, think it's because I have a MK1 where Booster and Mod are on the same dial so it's an either/or situation but can be and on the MK2. Is yours a MK1?

Sounds great in the video- but when I do exactly the same on my 100 Mkii it doesn't sound anywhere near as good- sounds muffled and dead compared. I wonder why?
Must i use the tone studio to create tones or its the same as fiddling with the amp itself?

I have one 100w Boss katana, 2 , 6.5w Boss katana mini amps to busk out and one 300w Boss katana bass amp. I love these amps ..the clear tone and access of the programs of effects are endless.....i can bring my 100w Boss katana and can switch it down to 50 watts without the problem of carrying heavy amp with no control of volume After having fender amps fading out sounding like your walking on loose gravel..and a Marshall jcm 800 full stack farting from your distortion petal seems too much to handle gig to gig .
With my Boss katana I don't need to carry any effect petals and dial in the HM1 petal with my Delay without an issue
Is it possible to create a shoegaze/dreamy sound with this amp and studio?
4:45 this is why I brought the 100 2x12 (mk1). It is awesome. Still furious at Boss for not putting a speaker out on the mk2. I6:36 still don't under stand why Boss made it so you can't move the chain around. Now you have to buy the missing pedals in your pedal chain to get your tone, drives me nuts.
The mk2 does have a line out. I have one myself and have used it.
Great video. Can you dial in these tones without the tone studio? I have a current Mac, so the Tone Studio is not an option for me. I have the Artist MKII.
Why is tone studio not an option if you have a current mac? You can’t deep dive without tone studio.
@@TheStudioRats They have not updated the Boss software to run on Mac OS 11 (Big Sur). It also will not run on M1 Macs (but mine is in Intel).
All your videos are great especially this one, tried settings on my Epi Les Paul and it sounded good apart from the noise suppressor. I used your settings but I had to put threshold on max to get rid of the hiss. Am I doing something wrong?

Cheers for the message! I’m surprised you need to use the noise suppressor that high. Stupid question but it is switched on?? I’ve never used a mk1 but maybe they’ve improved it with the mk2?

I find the lead and brown channels unusable to be honest, they both sound really fizzy no matter what I do in tone studio.
I tend to stick to clean channeland I’ve also got some really good tones using acoustic channel
I agree I think the best channel is the clean and then to use either the inbuilt drives or hook up an external one.
@@a1terrier2 there's something wrong or strange with either your katana or your less paul. Mine with humbuckers is absolutely silent even with pretty high gain settings.
Has your Les Paul got humbuckers? My Les Paul with humbuckers is virtually silent, no need for the noise gate at all.
Doesn't Boss have a facility where the community can upload their patches? Can you do that?
Is it necessary to connect it to a computer to get the best out of the amp?
Thanks for this tutorial Paul. If I am understanding it correctly, you're kind of creating a "2 channel amp" in one patch. Without booster is the clean, with booster is the rhythm/lead. Adding the solo could technically be the lead?

I have the 50 MkII, and I can indeed use both, the mod control is a separate ring on the booster knob, only found it out by mistake as I grazed it with my finger while messing around with stuff.
I don't know if that's different on the MkI, just thought I'd chime in.
Hey Paul! First off let me say that I love your videos, and it seems like you're getting some great tones out of the Katana. I do, however, have some confusion with this one.
At 2:40, you demonstrate what you say is a "clean" tone, yet the tone is clearly distorted. You're showing the settings panel with no Booster engaged, on the Clean channel, and even with the gain set at 66 it should be truly clean. Later on as you build the patch, around 6:04, you toggle the Boost, to reveal a much cleaner sound, which is what I would have expected to hear at 2:40.
Was there something going on in the recording where the Boost was initially engaged even though it was not reflected by the panel settings you were showing?
icetrey47 hi. To me my clean tone is never truly clean, I’m using dynamics on playing to make it either very slightly driven to lightening up my playing to get it very clean. I hope that helps.
For some reason my overdrive sound is really fuzzy, I’ve played around with the drive settings but it still sounds quite muffled and ‘hissy’ is there any fix for this?
Hi, try tuning the presence or treble down. You can also look at the parametric eq. I’ve done vids on all of this,
Great vids mate this is my go to channel atm... I have the mk1 100head and a 2x12 cab and on 50watt switch i can't turn it on... The master is at 20 to and the volume on 25 to as its just too loud for home use which drives me mad as i can't ramp it up so tones never sound the same as all your tones 🙁🙁🙁
