    guitar player at music store - " I need that classic blues tone..I need a '59 Les Paul and vintage bluesbreaker combo". Dave Simpson - " hold my beer......"

      I think your comment sums it up nicely. Dave can cover these tones coz he’s a great player. It all comes down to the player.

      It sounds great, but a good tube amp would sound warmer methinks, and be more touch-sensitive.....or maybe I'm deluded and just like to see glowing tubes?

      Hold my beer, and give me the cheapest Les Paul style guitar and a budget / mid-priced solid state amp

    This is excellent: simple, straight-forward and informative - really helpful. I was on the verge of donating my Katana MkII to a local evangelical church or a school coz I couldn't get a decent sound out of the thing. I've had it a year and barely used it, indeed I bought a Spark 40 as a replacement practice amp. Then I watched your video here and started to get pleasing noises out of the MkII. This video caused me to tumble down the Boss Tone Exchange rabbit hole where I discovered patches that delivered tones which made my soul sing. Bless you Mr Simpson, you did a pretty crappy player a solid. I hope karma does something nice to you. I suddenly got an amp I now love to bits and can't stop fiddling with.

    My blues band is playing "All Your Love" by the bluesbreakers right now, and all throughout your intro I couldn't help but think "this sounds just like All Your Love", only to find out later that thats exactly what you were going for. Spot on!

    Getting the exact tone of Clapton on 'Beano' is impossible. But one can get close. Dave gets close enough for me. Even if one had the same guitar, the same amp, the same room, the same recording equipment; it would still be impossible. In fact I don't even think that Clapton could replicate that sound, even if he wanted to.

    Great tones, loved the PG bit and as you said in your fantastic 'play like Peter Green' tutorials he was the 'loud to a whisper' master. Super super playing again, thanks for making my evening. Bless you!

    Great video I learned a lot. I never considered the impact of the recording process on the original recordings. I had a blues cube artist for 7 years and recently sold it because I simply couldn't get it to work for me like I can my Carr Rambler. Seriously considering a katana as a practice amp now - as it seems to be everything the Blues Cube wasn't.

    I love it Dave! Over the years as I got better I came to appreciate your playing more and more. There are lots of guitar players on youtube where people are raving about their playing and I think to myself, “well, they’re not even average compared to our guitar heros”… But your playing is actually solid!

    Cheers Dave! You're the first one that I've seen on TH-cam to attempt these elusive tones on a Katana. I think that you did a great job of it. BTW I've seen on some videos on the Katana is that there's a global eq setting available when you hook it up to a computer where you can attenuate the high frequencies and make the amp sound warmer overall should want to do that.

  • @angusorvid8840

    It's an absolutely great workhorse of an amp and a much better value than any tube amp I can think of, and this is due in part to its solid-state design and all the extra tone shaping you can do with the Boss Tone Studio, which is awesome. I'd definitely get it with the pedal to switch between the channels and settings, etc. But it's a very plug and play amp. That's why the Katana is so popular. And the 50 watt is more than adequate. It's VERY loud and clear. I expect this line to stick around and keep developing in new, wonderful ways.

    Where has this chap Dave Simpson been all my guitaring life? (50 years and counting) Having just bought a Katana that's why. Great player and great tutorials. I've kicked my steam driven laptop back into action and plan to download that Tone Studio thing. Looking forward to my next gig with the Boss...

    The Boss Katana is hard to beat. I've had mine a few years now and i play it exclusively. My other amps are just getting dusty. Its light and gigable and has amazing tonality. I' a big fan.

  • @Matthew_Scan
    @Matthew_Scan ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That’s a good point when recreating these tones you have to take into account microphones and EQ. I have a digitech Jimi Hendrix pedal where they recreated the songs on the record, I matched Little Wing on the Katana clean channel with the built in treble boost and it sounds double tracked so I added a 30ms delay and got pretty close

  • @yvandewever6518

    Having pedals is a lot of fun. Having guitars & amps are a lot of fun. However, one good guitar(subjective) straight into a good amp, is really all one needs. The rest is up to the player.

    Would love to see you do some more videos like this for other artists on the Boss Katana. I’m sure you could get close to a JF tone without the requirement of pedals, and some other excellent artists, nice work! 👍🏻🙌🏻

    In a different time, with another type of audience ready to listen, Dave would have been a well-known name on the guitar scene. Alas, we don't live in that kind of time anymore and the audience is no longer around.

    Absolutely brilliant video Mr Dave, some excellent tones there, they really put you into the world of those artists. Your playing too, wonderful. Now I know that music isn’t a competition. I also know that it’s all subjective and personal. Well here’s my bit. I know who my greatest guitarist ever is. He comes from Louth and is called Dave Simpson! 👏👏👏

    I'd rather like Dave to try playing the Cream song, 'Dance the Night Away.' Which is one of my favourites. Eric is playing a twelve string on the track too. Actually, thinking about it. I think his playing on the studio half of 'Wheels of Fire' is pretty awesome and well worth investigating.

    Great tones out of the Katana! Makes me want to go out and get one, except that I briefly had a Katana 50 and thought it sounded closed, sterile and processed with an unpleasant midrange honk I couldn’t EQ out. Maybe not enough time on the brown mode.🤔

    • @ptrisonic
      @ptrisonic ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Simples really. You can get great tone out of the Clean channel by cranking the Gain - the Volume should be dimed, anyway on everything, EQ should be back pedaled on Treble and Bass; turn up the Presence to compensate. Alternatively turn down the Gain and crank up the booster (on "Green") there is more than one way to skin a cat. I saw Fleetwood Mac in the Studio with Mike Vernon and they were all using Orange amps to record "Albatross". Go figure! Good luck, Pete.

    The holy trinity is Hendrix, Green and Clapton in my book and Clapton was a major part of my musical youth. Even now when I pick up the guitar people say ah Clapton ! You have a lot of his tricks nailed so you are much better at imitating him than you give yourself credit for (especially as you have to avoid copyright !). I have tried hard not to want a Katana - looks like I have failed.

    Cheers Dave -this was one of your best videos. Both in terms of the tones you extracted from the Katana but also your grasp of the very different play styles of the artists emulated. Still sounded like Dave but a very respectful nod to Eric, SRV, Roy and PG. Well done indeed.

    As a rule I rarely listen to an opening jam and hardly ever listen to one all the way through....That was off the hook Dude. Listened to it all the way through twice. WOW!!!! As for SRV's tone, I was third row center in 1984 at Alumni Gym at the University of Tennessee while he was promoting Texas Flood. The gym had been build in 1931. The acoustics sucked. SRV however sounded amazing. Yes it was a bit raw but it matched his playing. Raw and in your face. What came out of his amps was not of this earth. If you want to hear that tone search for Live at the Macambo. That was pretty much the Texas Flood show. As for raw in your face tone, look at EVH. His tone changed the guitar planet on VH1. As he matured so did his tone. Same with SRV. As for Clapton, he's just a douche bag and a master of backhanded compliments. I saw him in '82. Yea he was good but what I heard/saw SRV do with a strat was beyond words.
