    Back in the days, celluloid was also a popular handle material for pocket knives.

    • @pen.venture
      @pen.venture  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Stefan - yes you are right - it was a very popular material at that time when plastic was not around, from my knowledge it was mainly used for the film industry and the excess was used for pocket knives handles - sunglasses frames - fountain pens :D

    Very enlightening info. I have a fountain pen from my elders and it has a crack at the barrel of the neck. I wanted to try repair that crack with acetone to stick like a weld but nothing happened and left a white trace like a cloud. I thought it's made of celluloid but obviously not. What material does acetone leave white traces like a cloud?

    • @pen.venture
      @pen.venture  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      hmmm thank you - not sure about acetone but with fountain pens is not recommended to use acetone regardless of the pen material, I think it damages all of them, (not sure about raw metal - but anything else is a no no)

    I have a follow-up question: Are there some patterns possible with celluloid that cannot be produced any other material such as acrylic?

    • @pen.venture
      @pen.venture  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, most of the patterns cant be obtained with acrylic. Celluloid is not poured and this is why it can be so complex. If I had to find a synonym id say that every color or pattern is constructed, with alternating layers and cut in a specific way to get the effect.

    Interesting video Emil. I was curious about your comments on storing celluloid pens in an open case. I've had my celluloid pens stored in a closed case, some for several years, and haven't encountered any issues that I am aware of. how do you store your celluloid pens when they are not in use?

    • @pen.venture
      @pen.venture  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well Anthony I store them exactly as you see in the thumbnail , in a tray and leave them away from direct light on my desk. Regarding your pens that means the celluloid in your pens was well cured and it lets off a lot less gas, but there are plenty of examples with new old stock pens left for years in their cases where the entire body is melted or distorted ... a scene from a horror movie. I personally only pull the zipper on my pens if im out or traveling in rest they stay in open pen cases on my desk or in pen trays.

    • @anthonysanchez2752
      @anthonysanchez2752 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@pen.ventureThanks for the tip, I'll leave me case lid open from now on, at least until i get a open pen tray. These NOS pens you are referring too, could it be that these pens never had a chance to breath, ever (having never been out of their packages), and the difference between those pens and my pens, for example, is that mine have been out, and being used, so they have had a chance to breath?

    • @pen.venture
      @pen.venture  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Could be this, I just heard a very sad story with a retailer checkin his stock for a bunch of old vintage Omas pens left In his storage area in the boxes for more than 10 years and the whole lot was damaged beyond use, he only was left with the gold nib.

    • @anthonysanchez2752
      @anthonysanchez2752 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@pen.venturesad to hear that. I would guess that because these pens have been encased in their packaging for so long and never had a chance to breath, the material suffered.

    • @pen.venture
      @pen.venture  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think that too. A sad story all together

    • @pen.venture
      @pen.venture  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can completely relate to this - it is not such a huge deal but at the end of the day - we need to take this in consideration because later in life a pen made of celluloid may have such issues

    • @pen.venture
      @pen.venture  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1
