    Thank you very much for this video. I have had a Shaffer fountain pen for 35 years that is very sentimental but never worked. I followed your instructions and once I spread the tines and it writes like a dream.

    Very good and easy to understand advice! I like how you advocate gentleness in a gentle way. Thank you for pointing out that nib adjustment also includes considerations about the feed function! I usually take care not to apply a wedging force on the feed, but obviously I have been over cautious.

    Hello Emy, indeed you came again with a video that showed a lot of people how to get your fountainpen working like you want to have it! I was very pleased that you (over and over again) warned that it is a delicate proces, and I hope that it won't lead to a lot of damaged (expensive) fountainpens. And as you said, this technique that should be told amongst us!
    Never the less, I remember the first time I did this proces, how long I was busy with it, but in the end the result was super. I still have that fountainpen, it wasn't an expensive one, but at that moment it was as much as I could afford. It was a Waterman, and I was for some time very satisfied with it.
    Thank you for this video Emy, I enjoyed watching it very much, as and I hope you enjoyed making it! See you soon again!

      Harry like always you are a gentleman :D thank you - at one point everyone in the hobby should start to practice things like these and its better to have some knowledge and tutorials where to start - practicing on some inexpensive pens can really help and it can make the person quite skilful and not that stressed when it comes to adjusting nibs

    Great overview. I did have one comment, I was always told to never clean ebonite with any type of alcohol as it would degrade and ruin the ebonite. I have never tried it but I have always heard this in the community.

    • @pen.venture
      @pen.venture  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      it could be true , i haven't heard it but i might ask someone who has more knowledge. Thank you for the feedback Eric

    • @JericoJopio
      @JericoJopio ปีที่แล้ว

      If there is a risk of damaging the ebonite feed, you can use pen flush (a special solution for cleaning fountain pens) or distilled water-just a little bit would be enough. But if the feed is made of plastic, you can use a little bit of rubbing alcohol to clean the feed. Just be careful since alcohol can discolor the feed.😊

    • @pen.venture
      @pen.venture  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Glad it was helpful! Using the finger nails is safe for the nib and you have a lot more control than using something sharp and made from metal - been there done that and I've ruined quite a few good nibs

    • @Johan-vk5yd
      @Johan-vk5yd 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@pen.venture Ouch! Ruining good nibs suck! I use metal tweezers or pliers scarcely, when a tine is twisted. I always apply a protective tape between the nib and the
      jaws of the tool, to prevent scratching. I feel ashamed for the stupid mistakes I did many years ago when I started tinkering on my own, but I guess beginners could learn from them.

    I wish there were pliers that were made out of a high friction yet soft material that could be used on tines to pull them apart etc without scratching the pen

    • @pen.venture
      @pen.venture  ปีที่แล้ว

      hmmmm there is something but when I used it I observed that a nib can be damaged quickly, since its made of a rather thin gold or steel material and the hands combined with the leverage of the pliers... can squeeze a lot of force

    Great video. I have a Hondian 517D with a fude bent nib. It writes so much lighter than my other pens using the same black ink. The ink flow is less than the other, although it's extremely smooth. What seems to be the problem? How do I fix it? Thx!

    • @pen.venture
      @pen.venture  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Fude nibs are something that are very finicky and temperamental - I couldnt answer to you because I would need to see one of these nibs in person and to write with it to understand what is going on, on a normal nib I can understand it more easy even if I dont have it in front of me

    • @HumbleBearcat
      @HumbleBearcat 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@pen.venture I suspected the problem was not enough of ink as the ink would have to spread out over a much broader width due to the wide fude nib, so few days ago I tried to widen the gap with my finger with no results since I couldn't remove the nub from the feed. So I flossed a strip of aluminum foil paper into the nib gap line and a small piece got stuck inside that couldn't get out by washing so out of desperation I slided a thin razor blade in between. The result was the ink color now becomes almost as dark as the other pens but now it writes much more scratchy...

    In some fountain pens if I write for an extended period of time (short writing period no problem) the feed doesn’t flow very well and it takes time for the ink to drive down again. What can you do to accelerate inflow to the feed while you write for an extended period of time?

    • @pen.venture
      @pen.venture  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmmm it is a tricky question, most of the times it has to do with the exchange of the air vs ink, a fountain pen is actually a very balanced exchange in between the ink that gets out of the pen and the air that gets in the pen. If this ratio is less air gets in than ink gets out, it starts to starve the pen. The way you can improve this is by making the ink channel in the feeder a little wider - usually one or two passes with a razor blade (classic one) in the ink channel is clearing that channel and makes it a little bit more wide, is not visible with the naked eye but it does improve the flow.

    What to do if stupid (high quality) nib stubbornly resists that kind of treatment and always comes back to its original state. In my case tines simply wont touch each other always springing back to the state with slight gap in between. That makes it too wet. 14k, 149 nib from 80s.

    • @pen.venture
      @pen.venture  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      :D there isnt anything like a stupid question - nibs are made to be under tension always so this is why due to its bent shoulders it tends to always want to come back to its shape, when we adjust them if we want to have a different shape, we need to push it a little over that point of always coming back to its shape, its a gentle equilibrium and one that does that needs to understand how much to go further because a little over the sweet spot can result in a bent nib. For sure taming down the flow you must scissor the tines one under the other than the other one as well - but be careful doing so and go baby steps - the best solution would be to get it into someone that has more experience
