    I was at this show. There was a raging blizzard that night. Roy was supposed to do 2 shows, but the crowd was so thin everyone was invited to stay for the second set. Roy was never a "showman", just a straight up blues genius. Cross that off my bucket list.

    I got turned to Roy's music in the late 70's.
    I had been a fan of Black Sabbath and Deep Purple at the time. I heard Roy play and was in awe of the unstated subtlety. I'm still in awe.
    God bless you Roy.
    This is what young guitarists should be learning from. Just like the blues masters of old.

    This picking gives me goosebumps! The man was good! There were some select few Roy shows at My Father's Place on Long Island mid 70's I believe. Of all the show he played there, there were these few shows where he did things with his guitar I've heard nowhere else. Some of the best Roy picking I've ever heard, not to be duplicated at any of his other shows. Just amazing. It was one of the WLIR recordings I believe. Me and my friend Tony seem to be the only ones aware of these shows. This man is under-rated generally speaking!

    I was lucky enough to see him here on Long Island a few times. He truly is the world's greatest guitarist. The man could do things with his tone and volume control that 15 piece bands can't do. I know you younger guys are all into how fast a player could get from first position to 22 position. This guys didn't need to fly he (he could if he wanted to) because he did more with a couple of notes than some players could do with 100.
    Love and miss you Roy you truly were a genius

    I saw him at the town hall in Auckland in 1987. We had driven up from Wanganui and drove back overnight so I could get to school the next morning... Hung round afterwards, and got to meet Roy backstage. He autographed some album covers for me (including his first album, the cover of which was apparently shot at a cemetery). The concert was mindblowing at times, but it largely pandered to a hard rock crowd rather than being classic Roy blues.

    I saw his show 1981 in Berkeley. It was a big night club near the UC theater.....That was a great show and I still remember he played this tune and a lot of Hendrix's. I was also lucky to see him at bathroom and I saw he smoked a cigarette called TRUE! I still listen to his music and they are all great!

      I was there so glad I got to see him. He was the best,the show was great and he didn't use ten square feet of stage but he was electrifying.

    For those who need guidance -- the Jimi Hendrix take off is toward the end of Roy's performance of "Hey Joe" in Austin, TX.
    TH-cam: Roy Buchanan - Hey Joe (Live From Austin TX).

    I saw him around the same time in Dallas. Bugs Henderson was warming up and then jamming with Roy on the encore. Never had the pleasure of seeing Rory. For bluesrock guitar they just don't come any cooler than these three guys. All in the super jam session in the sky now, with Stevie, Gary, Albert and Freddie. And Jimi of course.

      I saw Bugs, Rory, and Roy, all separately but at the same venue ( Texas Opry House, Houston) around the same time. I knew I was lucky then , but had no idea how lucky it would turn out to be

    Saw him live in Baltimore a few months before he died. Stood right in front of his rig, could have touched his shoes. He definitely was using a few pedals. I recall an old Tube Screamer & a Wa as well as some MXR units. Not a lot of pedal gear considering most player's rib but he did use them.

      From the '50's through the 70's LeRoy Buchanan did not use any pedals whatsoever, just a tele through a vibrolux and his fingers, all twenty of them.
      Pedals came later after he became famous and grew tired of getting mugged after shows as degenerates tried, unsuccessfully, to steal Nancy, but failed.
      Pedals were a way of getting sounds he couldn't get, tones that weren't there, in newer guitars.

    There are great guitarists out there but Roy Buchanan? He was at that level of phenomenon that occupies perches few can reach. Tommy Emmanuel is another. Some people have never heard of these guitarists but musicians know them. Many musicians don't want to follow these guys on stage. Roy even did a take off on Jimi Hendrix in one of his concerts that was scary good. As if Jimi himself guided his hands because the rest of us mortals believe no one can play like Jimi. But Roy did that night. It's on TH-cam....look for it. The only draw back Roy had -- he's not much of a vocalist. But then, he didn't have to be.

    • @guitarzan34
      @guitarzan34 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      To this day Roy is one of my favorite guitar players and a downright blues legend. Saw him perform many times back in the 70's. Throw in Jimi and Tommy Emmanuel and you've got some "rare guitar genius" to talk about.

    • @BlackLocustMusic
      @BlackLocustMusic 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      guided his hands ?? snap out of it !!!!

    • @lastrada52
      @lastrada52 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      BlackLocustMusic - Yeah...."guided his hands...." -- the complete quote would be "as if Jimi himself guided his hands..." which means he didn't -- it just sounded that way. Clarified enough? It's just like when a writer writes something profound and can't explain how they were influenced to write it, and were never able to duplicate it again. Bob Dylan said he couldn't explain how he wrote many of his early songs because whoever influenced his writing in that way doesn't now. Many writers and creative people believe their work is guided by unseen influences. It's not spiritual if that's your objection. But, Roy certainly sounded closer to the real Hendrix that night than anyone ever did. Snap out of it? Try writing & capitalizing in complete sentences and maybe someone will take you seriously. Over-reaction to simple, unoffensive words doesn't show much depth.
