The Rolling Stones wanted him to replace Brian Jones, and Eric Clapton asked him to play the guitar for Derek & The Dominos - but he turned down both offers. ROY BUCHANAN was a true master of the Fender Telecaster guitar; and his playing technique significantly influenced musicians such as Gary Moore and Jeff Beck.
He moved to Los Angeles when he was a teenager and played in the band Heartbeats with Spencer Dryden. After this, he went on tour with Dale Hawkins and played with Robbie Robertson (The Band) who described BUCHANAN as one of his main influences. In the sixties ROY BUCHANAN got married, moved to Washington D. C. and worked as a studio musician for more than one hundred album productions. His first solo album was only released in 1971 and which led to the result that he and his inimitable playing of the Fender Telecaster was a well-kept secret among the likes of John Lennon, Eric Clapton and the Rolling Stones. Despite this reputation and the huge success he experienced in the seventies, BUCHANAN felt restricted in the creativity granted to him by the record companies. In 1981 he decided to go on a four year break. This Rockpalast concert was recorded at the Markthalle in Hamburg on February 24, 1985 - just three years before his tragic suicide.
It is a performance that shows ROY BUCHANAN’s genius on the guitar in an extremely unique way - especially with his brilliant covers by artists including Jimi Hendrix or Don Gibson.
An impressive legacy!

What an anti hero. Who starts a concert with a couple of minutes tuning his guitar, searching his pockets for a handkerchief and then blowing his nose? Such a contrast with shows nowadays when everything is about a perfect choreography with a large amount of dancers and changing outfits every other song.
This is so much more intimate. Roy Buchanan, an absolute master of the telecaster!
I loved it!
That is what I'd call personality
He really got every possible sound out of that that Telecaster -- and, seemed to enjoy doing it. Great rhythm section.
The king of the Telecaster early days. RIP Roy Los Angeles
what an era for good music
Saw this legend many years ago in Melbourne and have never forgotten it.❤❤❤
Me too, at the Village Green in Mulgrave.
Lucky you
I was blessed to see Roy many times in Pittsburgh…he was awesome. One show around Christmas some butthole in the crowd lit a smoke bomb while Roy was playing “ Blue Blue Christmas “ and they evacuated the Stanley theater…we were all outside in an alley and Roy was out there too. Everybody kept cheering for him to continue the show when they let us back in..He did!
I was at that show. I also saw him at several different venues around Pittsburgh. The Syria Mosque stands out in my memories
For those that believe his family and friends, he didn't commit suicide in jail. Roy was known to be cantankerous at times and many feel he was killed by a guard/guards, I'm one of them. His guitar genius is unparalleled. One of the greatest all time to hold an axe. I hope his soul has found peace, God Bless Roy
Roy lived close to me in Falls Church Virginia. I use to go the family BBQs there. He would show up in a small amp and play away. Neighbors all knew Roy and he came to play for his friends, the neighbors heard and came over. I know and concur, his death in a Fairfax County jail is a weird explaniation.
@@acsjr222 Right on, that's very cool. I'm jealous but glad you got to experience that.
Undeniably underrated, unsung music hero. Will never forget genious at work.
5 thumbs up for the man.
One of the best

First class concert! Thanks Roy ❤
I play a lot like Roy. I live his unique blues style. RIap Roy!😂😎🎸
Fantástic 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏👍👍👊👊👊👍👍🙏🙏
This is Music
He squeezes some love out that telecaster.
'85, huh? Boy, we fell behind! He is certainly among those who melt their frets and scorch their fingerboards, with so much personality right off the bat!
The best ever!!! played like this in the late 50,s R.I.P. check out the docs on him
Bravo!
Great guitarist!!!!Always remembered!
All strings attached...to heaven! ♥
Rock on yeah🎉🎉🎉🎉❤
Toller Gitarrist..🎸gewesen...
Eight bar blues embellishments to the max.
I saw him with Lonnie Mack and duckies betts in the mid 80’s in Denver, Colorado, at the rainbow music hall on evans…. Mind boggling. Got the album when a guitar plays the blues soon after. Left us in a terrible way…. RIP Godzilla
How refreshing to see a video of Roy, wjere the camera man and producer have it together. Looking at you Austin city limits.
Ha, I think the same when watching ACL.
💜
its a pity there's so little connection between roy and his band. they back him up but could've been anybody for that matter. it will not have been a very entertaining tour......but then again.....what a manificent guitarplayer
Yeah, I suspect they were a group of local musicians assembled on the fly for this (and possibly other local) Deutschland gig(s). He did the best with what he had. Bless him. He was so great. 🙏🤘🤙
@DAVIDREDMAN-ri5jf Exactly. Sure looks (and sounds) that way to me. Drummer was the first clue, right off the bat. lol Thanks. All the best 🤙
Nobody was there to see the rest of the band rest assured
Roy didn't "practice" he just had guys show up and jam. Everything was just a jam session. Nothing wrong with that. He played his way.
@@Damaraja Martin Stevenson (vocals), John Steele (Guitar, Keyboards), Anthony Dunn (Bass) and Martin Yula (drums)
❤Gooooöd!
The teacher is at work.
Think heaven
Hail Roy Buchannan.

Illustre inconnu !
That looks like a 66 Tele…with that transitional logo?
Austin City Limits will always be the best Roy. This seems like a bit of a miss. The rosewood tele neck looks odd for Roy.
Haters be hatin. Let me see them entertain a crowd.
They clap when he blows HIS nose, lol.😂😂😂😂😂
Ya gotta be good for that!
German skag
NEVER HEARD of him,😂😂😂😂😂
Most people haven’t. Their loss, Roy was one of the best.
Now you have!
I hope that was a "Pick Up" band and not "His Band". They had that clueless sound that kids get when they know the notes but don't know the Feel ...
Let's see...Blew my nose...Checked my watch...What else? Oh damn, i forgot those voice lessons!
Tu ți-ai făcut un 'control ' la 'mansardă ' ?
When ya going on stage be reasy Ro play not PULLING a BIDEN ON US😂😂😂😂😂
Was Roy really good or was he a fraud scale runner? Hit a lot of off key notes.
Hate the tone of a Tele. Too cold, high pitched and lacking body.
That because the tele can do everything dickhead
Drummer is awful.
He does suck..lol
Nota great gig, unprofessionally and a bad sound. So sad.
Terrible back up band
Another worn out progression
Try playing it.
@@jeffbrassard1268 I said it’s a worn out progression. I guess you’re not Musician.
Classics worn out? Johnny Smith is too cool to even roll over in his grave.
What U listen to the shit that is on now
@@petermalezewski4022 I’m a Jimi Hendrix fan
Blues great...with a bit of surf flair. RIP
You are so damn right with that "surf flair" observation
💙💙💙
This one guy I never saw and I sure wish I would have.
Great upload. I saw him live in Boston several times. Easily in the top ten greats.
Gerade gefunden:
Der absolute Wahnsinn!!!
🎸🔥🔥🔥
R.I.P. ROY BUCHANAN.
Yeah, I was at this concert. 🙏
Great stuff here 🎸 thanks for sharing this with us ✌️
My husband opened up for him st the Stanhope House in Jersey!!! The Best!
Roy sounds just like Jerry Garcia, it just for a moment, during the 4th tune, I believe. The song just before Peter Gunn.
Peter green.
Feel the same...
Awesome, all without paddles, such a great Musician, thanks for the Stuff.
No whammy bar either, just fingers and strings
And no pedals😂
@@sheercerebralpower Thanks for the correction. I see, you know what I mean.🙂
excellent thanks.
Roy, did you know that we loved you?
One of the biggest "how good it was" concerts, that I have seen. The Bottom Line, in NYC. I knew he was an excellent guitarist, but that show blew me away.
I always loved the song Walk Don't Run. In elementary school a long time ago some students brought a favorite album to school to play. I brought the Ventures with that song on it. The teacher stupidly had the class vote on the best album, the Ventures got one vote, mine. The most popular album was The Monkeys, the other students had very bad taste when it came to music.
Monkees
@@woodybowen5362 What's the difference? They still sucked. But thanks anyway professor.
They edited out the part of the video of Roy Backstage smoking some flower with his band mates, and drinking a beer right before he returns for "Wayfaring Pilgram."
Roy was special.
vu au new morning paris la même année

Like nails on a chalk board, i just cant listen to this guy.
Don't worry, you and yourkind always have Taylor Swift's music...
Then don’t. Go listen to Nuge.
15:51 is a dying amp…..😮
Soulful Playing….
They absolutely should make a signature guitar with his name on it he deserves it
