  • Leighton Waite was only 21 when he took his own life. His death has influenced how his family will vote in the upcoming referendum on legalising cannabis. Sister Michaela Waite-Harvey will vote in favour of legalising cannabis because prison, where her brother was sent after being in possession of the drug, had a negative impact on her brother's mental health. Girlfriend Alicia Wilson will vote no because she believes without cannabis Leighton would still be here with her and their daughter Aniyah. Professor Tracey McIntosh talks about the evidence based facts on what a yes or no vote would mean. ➡️ SUBSCRIBE: / @thehuinewzealand

I dont believe that at all sorry, there has to be more to it than that. I'm guessing they charged him with dealing too, the possession charges alone could not get you locked up

@zweed69 Māori are more likely to be stopped, searched, arrested, and convicted for minor drug offenses than other New Zealanders. You only have to look at the institutional racism in our justice system ( report after reports) that currently exists... I still find it daunting that Maori make up 17.2 % of our total population yet makes up 52% of the prison population. Being arrested for something "so small'" is and unfortunately happens.

@@labrne5659 yea whatever thats all good and well but they said in the clip he was dealing, I know (bc I have been through the system and I am white fro the record) that this wouldnt be on the table if the police didnt know about it. If they did, there would be charges. Now I'm no expert on the law, but I can tell you from my dealings being charged with possession that 11 grams alone will not get a prison sentence here in nz, _regardless_ of your perceived ethnicity.

@@labrne5659 I have a maori friend who was recently caught growing, indoors, quite a large set up. They took his lights and plants and told him they would be in touch. They called week later and said he would get a warning. The police are way to busy with crack and gangs to worry about a kid with weed, unless there are connections to the things I just mentioned. period.

Alcohol is the gateway drug. Honestly...centuries of abuse with alcohol! Its still legal. People are already drinking/smoking underage.

Another victim of NZ's outdated ineffective punitive drug laws. More harm has been done to individuals and families by the bigoted application of this failed law.

Its easy to blame the weed but whos to say he wasnt going to suffer from depression due to something else. The support around mental health is absolutely horrible, I listen to the police frequencies and often hear calls of people struggling mentally. Police units asking if crisis teams can sort it and being told no because the teams ticked a few boxes and have no other suggestions so its not their problem anymore. Now we have police units acting as mental health councilors instead of catching crims, trying to support someone struggling emotionally until they break the law and can be arrested, or calm down momentarily and top themselves when left alone. Regardless of my opinion, my condolences to the whanau.

Decriminalization is the only way forward other wise we turn into the states and that's totally against the spirit of cannabis.

I think a lot of people underestimate the negative effect weed can have on a persons mental health. Just because its a natural drug people think its ok to smoke it and its not that bad. But i bet if people that smoke it everyday tried to stop it would be detrimental to their mental health and there are many negative side effects from smoking it regularly and by regularly i mean every day.

We will never have recreational cannabis here they won't do it bc of what's gone on in the US, and Thailand too look into it the legalisation there led to over supply and a saturated market. The business model here in nz is the same as many countries now, its all 'medicinal' you can access it very easy via an online clinic they will prescribe it for most people but from my experience the quality control is dubious and the price is up there. On the other hand its quite high grade and there are more flavours available all the time, I'm surprised by how many people are unaware of the situation.

Drug use is just a symptom of deeper issues within ones self so its not about legalizing cannabis its about understanding and dealing with the reasons why they're trying to escape their reality and how to help them thru it,becoz thats wat drug use is crying out for help, legalizing cannabis isnt really dealing with the core issues of why people smoke it in the first place it just makes it a free for all to be able to do it and do it anywhere,if legalized it opens too much of a can of worms where the public inparticular children can be exposed to it publicly,i do think however criminalizing someone becoz they smoke weed is also a cop out and costs taxpayers way too much money where that money can be used for programs to wrap support around people with dependencies and understand them more and introduce them to tools and other avenues that can enrich their lives and replace unhealthy addictions with better life strategies

My condolences to the whanau💙. I dont do drugs or drink, but cannabis is naturally grown, also known to have medicinal purposes. Apart from cleaning a wound, alcohol is 💯 legal. Mental health has been a huge factor for so long, the justice system is always a big ??? for much longer. Power to the sister an her journey. I may be wrong.
