What always gets me with these kinds of crappy product launches is I can't imagine how during all the years of research and development and millions upon millions of dollars invested into the product, not one person (in a position of power) looked at this and said, "yeah, no, this is not good enough, let's try something else." They just keep charging ahead and end up with this piece of crap.
sunk cost fallacy: too much time, money and resources invested. Also they pitched this to several vc's who invested millions and can't just back out of commitment
That is the current problem with bloated management who often have little experience, understanding or knowledge about what they oversee. Also they don't want to stand out of the group by criticising the product because they want to protect their positions.
the whole thing seemed sketchy since the announcement and how the guy was trying to "sell" the product on the stage. thank you for. being objective, rational and honest!
Everything about Humane felt sleepy from the get-go. Took no brainpower to conclude way in advance that this wouldn't succeed. Just sit this next to the Rabbit R1. The R1 screams fun, play and innocence through good design (and it's 199). While the AI Pin just snores lazy pompous and i mean, the humane team seemed, to me, to be dominated by completely oblivious, borderline narcissist personalities. Not a great combo.

Ridiculous comment. Apple is the exact opposite of this. Humane is a company which created a super high-tech product that's ahead of the market but the tech is not really there yet, so it's useless. Apple does the opposite - they're usually the LAST tech company to adopt an already existing tech and put it into their products in a useful way.
Big tech failures - this thing, Google Glass, even the Segway, don't take into account that if people look and feel like an idiot using it, its a failure. It's pretty basic.
I like that this review focused on the usability of the pin. I've seen reviews that examined the technical failings but having those put into context in her life made it much more tangible to me. Great video.
“It’s working to counteract something that was a problem caused by its existence in the first place” This is exactly what rewinding a VHS tape was! It was a super annoying problem created by the existence and limitation of the technology. The only difference is VHS gave us home movies that we otherwise couldn’t have. The AI Pin doesn’t really offer anything that a phone paired with a watch can’t already do. The camera is the only piece of tech a smartwatch usually doesn’t have.
When I first saw the campaign for this I thought it was just another Kickstarter… I can’t believe serious money went behind this project. It was an obvious flop.
They should bring down the price, sell it as an AR gaming system, then use the revenue to make updates to the processing and design to the point that they can allow an open source market to exist and let users create their own useful apps. I for example see this being really useful in a camping/outdoor wildlife hiking scenario. It could tell you what certain plants are, discern bird or other animals sounds, give directions, track movement. Stuff like that.
of all the ways I figured this could go wrong, I didn't have burning the end-user on my bingo card, sheesh. the bar was low, and they tunneled under it.
I might be wrong but... if they sold this as a phone add on that just used Bluetooth to tether itself to your phone it'd be more attractive. Then it could use the phone plans data connection and could cost maybe $200 at mist. And then a $12/month subscription might make less of a headache.
Sadly this is DOA and we are unlikely to see a version two. I do not understand the product; specifically, the pricing is shocking. AI is coming to every smartphone and that is the perfect AI device. Leave it at that. This and Rabbit are dead in the water.
I don't think is DOA since it got the name "AI" in it no matter how bad it is, people will still rush to buy one because of that buzz word alone. Good for company but bad for consumers who fell for it
I'd be sad if the evolution of personal computing devices stopped at cell phones. As bad as this thing is, I welcome companies trying new things. These yearly releases of yet another glass rectangle, "our best ever", with slightly improved hardware are... fine, I guess. I'm hoping for a more exciting future, though.
The thing that shock me the most is not only the price but about how impractical this device is. It feel like they just want to finish the ideals but never testing it in real life.
Maybe if it could connect to your phone if would be useful Imagine just using the assistant on your phone without ever looking at the screen That's pretty dumb
It’s a noble thing when the concept is at least good. This is a bad concept. I feel like voice assistants (Google Home, Amazon Echo) kind of peaked a few years ago because people don’t like talking to devices and these people didn’t get the memo.
Reviews I'm seeing on this device consistently point out that this device is a solution in search of a problem. I have to agree. It's a "solution" to "I don't want to use my phone" but then it executes that solution poorly. I guess there could be potential niche use cases, such as a digital assistant for a person with impaired vision.
People with impaired vision use the same phones as everyone. There are already accessible tools and voice commands, and even better they don't use bad ai, they are specifically made to read critical information and controls. This would never help someone with a disability.
NothingButTech just did an amazing interview with Humane. Hearing Bethany Bongiorno talk about their 1st Gen AI Pin explained a lot as Jacklyn did great getting her to talk about the criticism and future hardware.
bro, I have been saying all along that this was a scam since the weird press release closed demo. It seems like they built up a lot of hype on purpose so that people talk about it, and generate money in ads clicks. This is nothing but a tech demo and it's really frustrating to see how often companies release unfinished products and games, only to promise updates later. It seems like we just enjoy the hype and then enjoy the fallout for the clicks? We all know that something is wrong when we can't see something working before we buy it. If it was really good, it would sell itself without all the hype. Maybe I'm just crazy.
