  • “We know that they’ve suffered over half a million casualties. The Russians have thus far lost over 4000 tanks but they keep piling people through.”
Nato’s military exercise in Lithuania is a “conventional defence deterrent” against Putin’s advances, says Hamish de Bretton-Gordon

The war is tough on both sides, the Russians underestimated Ukraine and are realizing now that they need to hit harder than before. Russia has sent delegates so many times to NK, Iran and china. This delegates were not there for tea, they needed economical but more importantly military assistance. Russia's stockpile is not infinite and thats the reason they have switched there economy to a war footing and also because it is worse than the Kremlin wants its people and the world to know. Ukraine on the other hand had been mostly defending within its borders or territories, if they were allowed to hit targets in Russia 2 years ago, maybe the war would have not gotten this far or maybe it would have worsened for them. But the truth is, Ukraine is a lot smaller economically and militarily compared to Russia but it has inflicted so much damage to Russia. Putin has been very wary of Ukraine striking within Russian territory. Wanna know why? Because Russia has a less than impressive air defense, such strikes will awaken Russians to the reality of the war since the Kremlin has locked down the national media within Russia. The war is bad for Ukraine mostly since they are facing a much greater opponent and they are fighting with one hands behind their backs due to this weapon use restrictions, but whatever way it ends, this 3 days military campaign turned 3 years war, has worn Russia out too.

No matter how much one or other political party wants to attract voters by offering better funding for immigrants, better mental health care for huge numbers of young people claiming to suffer anxiety and/or depression so severe that they are unfit for work, or is it DEI, or revision of the education and cultural structure to guilt-trip the population into funding 'reparations' to anyone and everyone who has recent African heritage, the basic fact is that there will be no security unless this fundamental role is funded.

I do not disagree with the problem that our current government in particular has gutted our armed forces
Whether one should suspect the Russian connections to Cameron, Johnson, May, ERG, Brexiters etc for these bad choices - that is still in an as yet unpublished "Russian interferance" report blocked by Johnson before the 2019 election - it definitely doesn't have anything at all to do with immigrants, youth mental health problems, DEI or any form of "wokeness".
It was a clear government choice made after 2014, that has ensured that the British Army would not be in a fit state or ready for a war in Europe.

Even with the Russian tank factories turning out new units, and rebuilding old ones, the Russian tank inventory has effectively gone. Russia needs to keep tank units at strength in both the strategic direction of China AND against NATO, AND have sufficient tanks to be viable as an invasion force for Ukraine.
As far as open sources go, the Russian tank factories are not efficient the way the old Soviet Union were, so they only have a handful of tanks in their Tank and motor-rifle divisions facing NATO and China. So at least as far as MBT's go, they are vulnerable, because as we have seen, even the newest models are not that good. And I don't think they have many new models left, and those that do exist are rushed to Ukraine where they die.

Cold War-era thinking saw the Soviet Union hang onto large amounts of older weaponry such as tanks or guns, knowing they would have some use in the future.
"Russia has a lot of tanks left over from overspending on defence during the Soviet era.
Reliable sources place Russian Tanks losses from the start of the conflict at 2,850 to the end of February 2024
Russia turned to its Cold War inventory to source the replacement tanks it needed in Ukraine, the tanks from this era were quickly refurbished.
Known examples of T-54 tanks - which began development in the 1940s - and post-war T-55 tanks were pressed into service in Ukraine, T-62 models, which first entered production in the 1960s, are also present on the front lines of this war.
Ukraine and the West never expected Russia to have any of these [tank] chassis still available.
Unlike the West, such Tank losses would be fodder for potential criticism, Russia can drive forward with plans to return areas to their right place within Russia, even if thousands of tanks are compromised in the process

It’s interesting these analyses of Russia’s military which I still believe is now overstated.
They’ve lost about 80% of their first line Tank inventory (T-90, 80, 72B3)
70% of their first line artillery and armored vehicles
    50% of their combat helicopters
50% of their first line warplanes
    Several AEWS and control aircraft
500,000 killed or wounded being replaced by poorly trained and unmotivated conscripts
Satellite imagery shows their reserve equipment storage yards almost empty
Meanwhile Finland and Sweden joined NATO brining 200 more combat aircraft, 50 combat helicopters, 100,000 more well trained soldiers and reservists and between them about 30 more warships and submarines
Combined NATO strength outweighs 10/1 in fighter aircraft, 3/1 combat helicopters, 7/1 in troops and about 5/1 in warships
Russia stands no chance of winning against NATO, especially after the creaming the Ukrainians have given them. As long as we keep Ukraine well stocked with weapons and ammunition, they will continue to degrade Russian military strength even further to the point where they cease to become combat effective at all

Its not the amount of money, its the lack of coordination between European countries in what they spend their money on, and their reliance on the US for key capabilities.
