    I’m a professional musician and writer/producer. Do a lot of intensive sound design… and the original Sega Genesis sounds SO DAMN GOOD. It’s why none of the official ports/emulations ever feel right to me. That sound engine is magic. I still feel blessed I got to be blown away by it back in the day :)

      You are tripping if you think the original genesis sounds better than anything beyond the Saturn port (coming from a fellow musician producer even tho having ears is enough)

      Lol everyone has their own tastes I have my own console favorites but I feel you Nelsonius I know from trying to emulate or make chipsounds very specific sound chips sound completely different have entirely different tone and feel and all of them are iconic for different reasons. Hearing a song you love on the wrong chipset can be jarring because many of them are unmistakable in personality not just wave shape but the limitations that define how they play like say how the nes couldn’t make true triangle wave so stepped them gradually creating a very specific sound adding a higher pitch to the triangle wave technically this is a flaw a limitation due to the jumps in steps effecting frequency as it’s not a pure triangle wave. But I mean artistically it’s the entire character of sound creating dozens of iconic songs and while someone would try to improve it others are trying to reverse engineer an accurate tone for chipsets.

      Idk I ain't a professional but I always hated the Sega sound effects from many games the only one I can tolerate was sonic games except spinball. I prefer the snes over sega sounds effect and music from games.

      @@mohamedaminekhadhraoui6417 I mean, we are talking about an inherently limited technology of it’s time. Top tier music professionals spent decades trying to overcome the noise and degradation of recording to tape… and now there are entire music genres dedicated to that low fidelity sound. I’d never argue that I want to listen to all my music through the Genesis audio hardware haha. But I do want to hear my genesis games sound just like that hardware did at the time. Primarily the music more than the SFX. All the official ports the music just sounds awful to me. It sounds like Windows 95 built in midi player and lacks the harmonic richness of the Genesis hardware. Just my preference, and nostalgia has a lot to do with it

    • @VitaEx
      @VitaEx 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@linkpwnsevery1 I also much prefer nes and snes myself I love the Ricoh 2a03 sound chip in particular but some sega games sound great or better on the genesis like streets of rage and mortal kombat the snes port of mk1 isn’t very good and the music also doesn’t pump as much but I typically find the sega a bit to gritty and prefer the softer sounds of the Nintendo

    While Frontiers leaves me feeling mixed about it, Origins on the other hand has me confidently hyped about it and its extra content. The fact that the classics are all made from the ground-up with Retro Engine and in 16:9 widescreen presentation and has a story mode with cutscenes connecting the games together makes things even better. It's looking to be a love-letter to Sonic fans while also being an excellent starting point for newcomers to the series.

      Well, while frontiers was a much needed transition and breath of fresh air (OF THE WILD! lol), I did have a lot of fun with it, and I do think the open concept is excellent - the world was dead empty, the “puzzles” were absolutely soulless, and the fact that they left lore files stating how there was only supposed to be 3 islands as unlockables in the game without re-recording them, they reused island textures and landmarks from previous maps for the last two, and even reused Amy’s heart tokens on Sage’s island (and yes, I thought it was off she didn’t have her own tokens on the other hero’s islands, but at least that made some kind of sense) - it all just screams RUSHED.
      I don’t know why SEGA couldn’t see the potential here and given the team a little more time. That being said, the “puzzle” aspects should have been better figured out, and designed, even prior to implementation in the game whatsoever that’s not due to time constraint. Bouncing/catching balls, drawing circles, and quick stepping buttons just don’t mesh super well with Sonic, they’re not mechanics we’re used to or even fit with “speedy blur ball” physics and gameplay. Why not implement movement based puzzles? If they really wanted what they used, they could’ve been used to simply open doors or even the cyberspace portals. The fact that the main gameplay loop and “puzzles” are over simplified and given 4x the amount of time needed to complete them is borderline insulting lol.
      And I could definitely go on about the difficulty spike on the final island - out of literally nowhere - and how ridiculously obvious that padding was.
      All that being said - I still had a lot of fun and see so much potential here. I really hope Sega go on to commission Frontiers 2 with some better world-interaction, puzzles, and maybe even an npc, or an animal, or something other than empty space. SUCH potential here, and I’m really excited.
      I do also wish there was more to do in the end-game of Frontiers, but I just went ahead and started a fresh run file 🤷🏻‍♂️

    Personally my main problem with Denuvo isn't that it can suck system resources like a vampire, it's that it requires online activation either every time you decide to launch the game, for every few weeks depending on how the developers set it up. Because once those activation servers turn off for good, and Sega decides not to update it to remove the drm, you ain't playing that game you spend your money on.

      This did happen with Fallout 3, which for years required fanmade workarounds just to play because it used a dead DRM service called Games for Windows Live. The hope is that, like with Sonic Mania, Denuvo eventually gets removed. Unfortunately Denuvo isn't the extent of the problems with the collection, but its removal will go a long way towards improving the product for the people who bought it.

    As great as it all sounds, I'll still wait on getting Origins. I've been a fan of Sonic ever since I got Sonic Heroes and Mega Collection and while I like that they've made the trilogy accessible in many platforms and now brings the definitive version for all four of them, I am feeling pretty burned out. With all the opportunities they have done with the genesis games, I felt like they could do the same with other Sonic games, such as a Remaster for the 3D Sonic games, or a trilogy collection with Sonic Advance. And the closest we got was them porting Sonic Heroes PS2 version on PS3.

      I don't think us early 3D Sonic fans are ever going to get anything like this. a 3D Sonic, Advance or Rush collection getting the same treatment as the Classics with Origins would be so fire.

      My (mid 30s) perfect "Orgins Sequel" would be: Start somewhere in 2D with Sonic/Tails flying with birds/flickies, then slowly transition from 2D cutscene to "remastered" 3D blast intro. Then start with Sonic 3D (both soundtracks) but change the the goal design all together. Don't make collecting birds the requirement, make it a bonus like in Adventure1/2. The stages could then be creative to switch between overhead and 3D..... i don't know where I am going with that, but 3D blast era in an "anniversary mode" doesn't need to be too long of an adventure, but Sonic comes back to a threat after hearing about a blue water monster...que Sonic Adventure first mini boss before Emerald Coast zone. You can keep the original voice acting from Dreamcast but just brand new animations all together. This is when the big decision is made "which is the best Sonic 3D gaming engine of the modern era" -- this is why a project liek this is almost a full new game, not just a remake. SA 1 takes you to SA2 and from there well maybe we go back to that new 3DBlast overhead with Sonic Heroes and then Sonic Generations as the finale...only this time, the classic sonic stages, use the Origins/Mania retro engine for the 2D stages... so you then complete all early eras of sonic. What a huge project for Sega. Get to work!!
      Edit:
      A) make robot stages optional for SA1 & SA2
      B) Maybe tails can keep the robot, but also hop out of it for SA2 stages? Make a beeper/whislte button to call the robot to him? vs..a pun to him always having to fly to sonic.
      C) Big removed from Main Adventure play but unlockable
      D) Shadow unlockable to be played on Sonic Adventure 1 stages and maybe others
      E) Knuckles finding chaos emerald needs to be really touched up. Either a better radar/dig system or new goals all together with bonus of finding emerals. Maybe he only needs to find "one" piece randomly placed else where and then 2 other super hidden ones help him get chaos/super skills later.
      F) Make an easter egg that Wind Valley music from SA1 is the same as the beginning of this game Sonic 3D Blast Stage 1.

    It's been confirmed that they'll use music from the prototype of Sonic 3 to replace the work that involved Michael Jackson. Those are from Carnival Night, Icecap and Launch Base zones. People who played the "Sonic & Knuckles Collection" will recognize them immediately as they were used there. They also confirmed that they are working those pieces of music to sound like they should've sounded in the Megadrive. The price isn’t steep at all. You spent 20 minutes talking about all the talent behind this project, how it’s rebuilt from the ground up using Retro Engine instead of just lazy emulation, and then you have newly animated cutscenes, missions, and probably other extras we don’t know about yet. When you consider what separates this collection from $20-25 collections of lazy emulation, the price is easily justified. It’s a more premium collection for a more premium price

    • @bradenhogan2
      @bradenhogan2 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Sydney_Angelyt but what separates this from those collections? I don’t care about what makes this similar to other products, the value is in what makes it different.
      Don’t just take for granted the animations, the 3D models, the Mission Mode, the extras, the fact that Sonic 3 & Knuckles hasn’t been released in over a decade and had to be remastered by the highly skilled Sonic code expert Simon Thomley along with help from others, presumably along with having to have had its music situation sorted out somehow (be it through licensing/legal fees or through implementing the prototype music or through having to contract someone to make new music), etc. This was all work and money. More work and money than has been put into any of those collections you’re thinking of. Does that not make this a more premium product than those? Therefore, stands to reason that a more premium product deserves a more premium price.
      Let me help you account for the price:
      Let’s start with a baseline. I’m using USD and U.S. price listings because that’s what I’m familiar with. Keep in mind the game costs $40 USD for standard edition, $45 deluxe.
      My guess is that if emulated ROMs with barebones menu and little-no extras of these games were dumped onto digital stores, it would be ~$5/game. That lines up with other games on the digital market (Ex: Double Dragon NES). $5•5 games (counting S3 and &K as separate as they are easily twice as long as S1 and I imagine twice as costly to remaster) = $25. That also checks out with similar emulated collections (Ex: Castlevania Classic Collection, Mega Man Legacy Collections) which fall around the same price. So JUST the games, NOT remastered, would be reasonably worth ~$25 in my estimation.
      That leaves ~$15 to account for ($20 if you count DLC). NOW consider those new animated cutscenes, the Mission Mode, the fact that these were remastered from the ground up for a new engine, and all the other extra stuff this collection has to offer. Is all that which separates this collection from the pack worth $15-20 extra? It is for me.
      And if you say it isn’t for you, then you tell Sega, “don’t put this much effort into projects in the future, I’d much prefer something cheaper and more similar to everything else you’ve made before please”

    Not too fond of the lack of options in Origins, honestly. This is $40, and not only are lives permanently disabled in Anniversary mode, but Knuckles isn't playable in Sonic CD. I'll still probably get this game once the physical release comes out (let's be real, that's inevitable considering Mania got one) but I feel like this is going to be a hard sell for a lot of people, especially considering the PC version comes with Denuvo DRM. I also don't like how they're delisting all the old versions, but not giving the option to play the Genesis versions in Origins. THAT'S what the "Original" mode should've been, not just lives and cropped 4:3.

    • @chrishd659
      @chrishd659 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The direction they're going with the game is quite odd, while I don't mind Knuckles' abscense in CD, it makes for an inconsistent collection due to the version of the engine being different and SEGA not tinkering much with the games themselves, and also HC working only in 3K as well.
      All of the budget seemed to be spent on the cutscenes and presentation, and while they look great, I still wish they could've invested on the ports themselves, since they look kinda there in comparison to the other stuff. Not to mention pricing, DRM for PC and delisting like you said.
      I'd really like to buy this, but spending +200 bucks for the base version for me is a big no for what they're offering.

    18:51 The edit-looking icon might just be to denote that you've cleared the game, as it also appears with the "CLEAR!" message underneath as seen in the trailer. Sonic using his Sonic 2 sprite in Sonic 1's character select is interesting, but the recently released Sega footage (that confirmed the Drop Dash) shows that selecting him like that just has you playing as regular S1 Sonic (unless there's some sneaky editing trickery going on there). This seems to just be a confounding error of using one S2 Sonic to represent him generally throughout the 4 games, even though that's specifically not even consistent with the S1 sprites used in the My Data & Ranking section of the game. Remember, they're not giving Knuckles new sprites to make him playable (in part) in Sonic CD.

      In a normal scenario, I'd be all for supporting the companies for an official product even with fan projects, especially since Origins looks kinda neat for what it's offering. We're finally playing Stealth's remakes on proper hardware and that's awesome.
      However, not only SEGA could've done much more with the compilation, but their marketing practices really hurt the product, overpricing and locking content behind a deluxe edition is just awful, not to mention other factors like the raise in price of Sonic's titles in other countries.
      I'm not really fond of Forever and Absolute, rather play the original phone titles, but I admire their work of refreshing these titles with their standards, something SEGA could've done with not much issues and just don't want to.

      @Alex Garner excluding the "hardcore" stuff (I don't like when people label themselves because it sounds really elitist), I do agree that SEGA is just filling a quota and saw this as a good opportunity.
      Origins being a starting point isn't a bad thing too, people who saw the movie could come to it and play to see how things were back then, and I'm all for a casual mode (with some rewards with that), I just feel like they should also make lives a choice for Anniversary too.
      Things are looking strange, but I do hope Origins look solid at least, something I can't say about (fan projects with) the decomps unfortunately.

    While Origins is looking good from the trailers, I just can't get the thought out of my head that SEGA could've also improved the games themselves, rather than adding external additions like mission mode, story animations and a mirror mode (which is also a feature in the Genesis collection)
    It's not only overpriced for what it offers, it's also overpriced for some countries like mine due to the absurd raise in Sonic games for some reason, and this is something I don't see much people talking about. While dollar is the norm for gaming, not every country can experience this game like they could before. While Sonic Mania got released here in Brazil for R$36,99 (currently R$99,99 by the way), base Origins will come out at R$214,99, and this is jarring to say the least.
    Another point people bring on about is Knuckles in CD, while I agree it's not a big deal to leave him behind, his exclusion leaves for an uneven product, which might be due to the different versions of the engine (CD runs on v3, 1&2 on v4, and 3K on v5). There is going to be the inclusion of the drop dash at least, but I think they could've updated the existing remakes to port to the newer versions of the engine to make for a "balanced" collection.
    I do appreciate the extra flair and presentation, but I'd also wish they could tweak the games themselves (or maybe get HeadCannon again for that instead), because I'm honestly afraid it might end up like a Colors Ultimate situation.
    Don't get me wrong, playing these remakes AND 3K on proper hardware running on the Retro Engine is awesome, but I feel like SEGA's just putting these together and spent their budget on 3K's porting and the extra stuff, with not much attention on the games with the information as of now. I hope I'm wrong, but sometimes it feels like SEGA is just treating Sonic as their cashcow and not doing much with it, just outsorcing things and not giving much attention with what's coming up (like in Colors Ultimate where it looked like they didn't give a damn about how Blind Squirrel was developing the port), especially since they're the ones wrapping the collection this time.

    • @chrishd659
      @chrishd659 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Alex Garner People currently are with the eye on SEGA, at least with the Colors Ultimate fiasco, not much with Origins due to the games having a better rep compared to it. They just aren't being harsh because the product seems to be pleasing them, and honestly, that's no problem, people do what they want with their money, especially if they weren't affected by the price raising.
      If they weren't charging as much and being overprotective with the PC version regarding Denuvo, I wouldn't be giving that much doubt, because I know these games are good. Even if it was a barebones port like the decomps it would be fine for me. But they are making this a big deal, which gives us the right to question what is going on.
      I don't think Origins will turn out bad, at least not Colors Ultimate bad, I just don't think they're giving the product that much attention for what they're advertising.

    Pre-ordered this collection as soon as I could and waiting for the release day. The fact that as I looked at the footage of Sonic 1&2, I saw they were the Retro Engine versions had made me happy that I can finally play these on a proper TV. Without a bunch of annoying steps (not going into phone emulation on PC, that is a pain on my end!)
    Only real problem on my end is the lack of a physical edition. If we do end up losing the Sonic 3 soundtrack, it will suck but I can move on. Then again they may end up having something going on that we may not know of. An example that I think could happen is: at first it will have the new soundtrack. After the sales Sega could pay some of the composers (or some other legal action, like a compromise) and the old soundtrack could come back (most likely a paid DLC) as a toggleable option.

Raising Sonic Mania as an example from 37 bucks to 100 (more than 100% of a raise!) is just shady, along the fact that Brazil wasn't the only country that got affected by this, and I don't see this covered often.
      Unfortunately, I'd rather stick to the phone versions of 1&2, and CD's PC version (officially at least). If you ask me, if Origins takes off and Frontiers tanks the same way Mania took off and Forces tanked, I'd consider that a pretty strong mandate as to the future of the Sonic series. That's the point where, if I were a SEGA executive, I would seriously consider disbanding Sonic Team for good, indefinitely shelving new 3D Sonic games, and officially handing the series over to the fans to make 2D, Mania-style games, eventually bringing back 3D Sonic under the fandom's reins. Sonic is one of those franchises where the fans have been its primary source of TLC while the official dev team mistreats it time and time again. As far as I'm concerned, Frontiers _should_ be Sonic Team's last chance to redeem itself before it gets blown up.

I really wish SEGA or even a group of fans cared enough to give those games that kind of treatment, since they REALLY need a definitive version after so many years of damage with each new port. (Specially Adventure 1)
    My best hope is that Origins at least opens the possibility of SEGA giving more Sonic games the chance of getting proper definitive versions. Is it because all the tracks are their remastered versions for Sonic 1, 2 and CD?
    Would they need to pay Brad Buxter royalties for remastering said tracks?

    My opinion going into this, is that I have Mega Collection Plus, I don't care about CD that much, Mega Collection Plus does its job at giving me all the classic sonic I want, plus more, in the game gear games. The only collection I'll consider is an advance trilogy plus rush trilogy collection, preferably with additional titles such as game gear games, rivals, or even the 3ds games-a true portable collection!(minus Dark Brotherhood). Ah, imagine that. Just raw, big, bulky, meaty, content. The 3ds games aren't even that good, they'd mostly just be there for anyone who ignored them. Which I've ignored 3ds Lost World, seen it, not for me on its own. Just, really focussing that rush + advance though, that's the core good stuff. Not two collections, just one. Unless they do two as (Advance + Game Gear), (Rush + Generations, Lost World, and Rivals and/or Boom). I'd accept that.
    I don't particularly care about the heights of soundfont, latency, incredible frame rates, or the bonus flavour town of those tails in CD stuff. Nice? Yes. Preferable to another game in my collection? No. A sound room and maybe an art room is pleasant additions that's about the depths I can hope for a collection of the magnitude I desire.

    I think I'm going to miss Ice Cap and Launch Base, but I've heard the mockups of the replacement music and it sounds great.

    It amazes me that sonic 1 alone has been released on so many different consoles same with sonic 2 and cd sonic 3 and sonic and knuckles also have a decent amount of re-releases but nearly as much this re-release of course obviously will count as it's most recent release because it hasn't seen a re-release in a long time the last time it ever got re-released was on sonic classic collection so this in my opinion is definitely a collection worth picking up

    Well, I wouldn't mind the pricetag if they included a graphics option to play those games with the visuals shown in the titlescreen (19:24). Even though I grew up with these games, those graphics at the time were because of hardware-constraints. It does have it sharm, but this would be a great time to see those same games without pixels. Like it was done with Streets of Rage 4, Wonder Boy, ... . As especially Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap showed, you can easily swap the graphics on the fly.

    “ a killer’s row of passionate, talented sonic fans”, I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone use “killer’s row” instead of “murderer’s row”

    These touch ups are nice, but overall just icing that most people will likely ignore.
    I'll support it on a sale, but definitely not for a retail that high. We got a team of folks remaking Sonic 2 HD and yet SEGA just gives us the same pixels we've seen for years along with a few sound effects that are more "accurate".
    If people are that bothered by how the sign sounds when it spins at the end of a level, they're giving attention to things that don't actually make a big difference (it's like 3 seconds lol).

    all i need is either a Hyper Tails or the ability to use Hyper Sonic in all games once unlocked OR Super Sonic in Sonic 1
