    Video 2 of 3 - 1990 944 S2
    Check out my first video 944 S2 overview • 1990 Porsche 944 s2 ov...
This 3.0L engine was the largest mass produced 4cylinder at the time.
Aside from the typical cam chain tensioner, balance and timing belt replacements I decided to do a thorough strip down of the top portions of the engine. Due to the clearance of the guides there was carbon buildup on the valves and pistons. So the head was sent to a Porsche specialist for re-sleeving.
Every section of rebuilding this engine was an adventure due to lack of online information, Porsche manuals and Clark's garage - (RIP Mr. Clark) was indeed helpful; oil/coolant cooler unit, oil pressure valve, tappets, balance shaft bearings/torque sequence, oil pan removal and assembly torque sequence, oil filler/crankcase vent, repainting of the valve cover (which followed the paint scheme during purchase of the vehicle only to realize it was not the stock Porsche scheme).
Aside from that near every part was kept to OEM design or above spec. in order to maintain the original functionality and appearance. Every nut and bolt that had a published torque spec. available was torqued. Meticulous attention was paid in maintaining a clean working environment in order to keep internals free of foreign debris. I'm partially OCD.
After completion, soon after start up and warm up, coolant and oil was changed. As an ex-mechanic I was aware that it would not be cost or time effective to have an independent shop complete this restoration especially due to the rarity of the vehicle.
Completion took about 2 years (about 30 weekends). The engine ran much smoother and quieter, in addition to providing more power. It is my hope that others wishing to take on a restoration of the 3.0L engine can benefit from my videos. For now there will be 3 videos dedicated to the 1990 944 S2 Cabriolet.
Feel free if you have any questions or comments.
    Happy Motoring! Vancity Motorhead

Great video and great job :) I have a 1990 S2 with about 70k on it, replacing all seals/pulleys and cam chain tensioner (failure of which wakes me up at night lol) was a pretty big job but lots of fun.. so much fun to drive and always generates interest and questions at the local car meets since it's pretty rare. I have yet to see another S2 on the road

To me getting into a 1990's sports car is like an adventure going back in time. You wonder how people drove back the, slightly lesser tire technology, less road noise dampening... I try to compare it to other cars I've been in from that era eg. mazda mpv, bmw 7 series, toyota tercels... The 944s2 though seems like it's built piecemeal (to me) was probably a very well produced car. The dashboard for one, must have been very futuristic and high tech back then. The abundance of vent controls must also have been a very luxurious feature. It's so rare to find a climate control that is partially auto but also equipped with so many manual functions. Cars of today have oversimplified climate controls and I can never get the ratio (low, mid and high vents to the right flow volume I prefer). I'm glad you're having a blast. What city are you in? In Vancouver we have at least half a dozen floating around.

@@vancitymotorhead3946 In Peterborough Ontario - sorry took so long to reply lol (2 years!!) Still having a great time with the car, trying not to put too many km on it. I've only put about 8k on it since my previous post. Just replacing the speakers and putting in a retro Blaupunkt cassette player to be stock. The only thing that doesn't work is the AC, which I'd like to fix.

You can see that the engineering of the 944 engine trickled down to other VW group engines. Cannot wait to start digging into my 2.7

I had a non turbo Guards RED 944 fully loaded with tan interior. I really liked that car. But I always wanted the turbo model. I like the look of that RED paint on your engine. I miss the sound of that engine purring at idle.

Turbo is definitely faster, but I wanted a simpler setup for if I needed to do repairs- and sure enough repairs were needed. Make sure to use high heat paint if you paint your valve cover. Yes I miss the sound of these engines, everything sounds so natural and raw but still tolerable for road trips due to the sufficient noise suppressants on the floor.

Great video, where did u find all the technical data for the motor? so hard to find anything on the s2 motor, I'm currently working on my S2 hopefully be back on the road soon

Mostly on clark's garage, and various specific searches on google. There's also a Porsche 944 S2 manual floating onilne as well and that helped a lot with correlating part numbers- it's not easy to flip pages though. I should note lots of parts (numbers) were superseded so what you have originally on your vehicle may not exist anymore as you'll need the new part number, just be sure you're able to return what you order. Best to always inform your retailer what make and model you have, maybe provide a picture and perhaps measurements if needed.

definitely a project, and depending on the health of your engine, you may or may not gain more HP from it. I definitely did...meaning it wasn't very healthy to begin with lol

    Help please?!
I am in the process of replacing the seals on the front end on my way to doing the cam chain tensioner pads on my S2.
I can't find help or schematics for the front cam shaft seals for the S2. Everything I see is for a single cam engine.
I have the cam gear off, and found there's another piece under there to which the rotor attaches! Does this slide off over the woodruff key, or does the key come out first? (Neither is moving!)
Thanks for any help you can offer!

I don't remember what you're referring to so I'll need to see a picture or video. It's been too long lol. But clarks's garage link is mentioned in this video's description and I used it the most. Word of caution- mark everything that seems to require alignment BEFORE disassembly, either use a sharpie (if you're not going to use degreaser or brake clean on the part) or use a hammer and center punch. vanmotorhead@gmail.com
This diagram helped me a lot- not 100% sure of the torque values. i.pinimg.com/originals/03/80/f2/0380f2bf3994f205b9da9168baca86f5.jpg

Looks like the head gasket was on its last legs. How many miles on the motor at the time of the rebuild?

    • @vancitymotorhead3946
      @vancitymotorhead3946  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes there was a bit of corrosion on the head gasket, luckily there were no leaks or contamination from oil with coolant. The car only had 60000miles so I assume it was mostly a Sunday driver.
