  • Porsche 944 16 valve timing chain tensioner pads completely gone! Steel on steel! If you neglect to replace your tensioner pads on a regular basis, this is what will happen. Luckily in this case, it didn't ruin the engine, but this is a bit of a miracle in this case. The 944 gods didn't want this one to die yet!

Unbelievable! Talk about horseshoes, the owner really dodged a bullet here. Excellent video.

Had that happen to my Audi 4.2. Plastic pad cracked and fell away. Made a racket because the chain was hitting the inside of the valve cover. The second time it happened (on the other side after replacing both sides) I wasn't so lucky. A piece of pad got hung up in the chain and made the intake cam jump time..... The rest of that pad on that S is in the pan somewhere.. LOL

Yeah, good guess about the "shards" being in the oil pan. I figured as much. I'll have to drain the oil then sweep the pan bottom thru the drain plug hole. How did this valve train NOT grenade, Dave?!

I want to send the owner of that Porsche a song called "Luck" by a band called "Washed out."

At what mileage should that tensioner, the pads, and the chain be replaced? Every 45K or so? What should it cost to perform that kind of job? Thanks.

It's hard to believe the chain didn't rip the tensioner right off the pedestal....ruining another 16v head.
I'm actually replacing the chain and pads on an S model too and had a question regarding chain slack once the new chain is installed. I set the new chain up correctly with 7 links between the two cam shaft tangs (113mm distance) which put the #1 lobes at TDC. But, my concern is with the chain tension (prior to tensioner installation)...there is slightly more slack on the bottom portion of the chain (lower pad) than on the top portion...compared to your video where it appears the slack is on the top? Could this just be because everything is not back together yet.....shifting the chain tension once the engine has been turned over by hand at the crank? Thanks for any help and keep bringing great 944 content.

Sounds like you did things right. Remember there's going to be oil pressure pushing up on the top pad after you start the car as well.

Restoring a 968 and my pads were very worn. Hope the cam teeth were all there and sharp. You can follow my progress here. instagram.com/irisblueporsche968/

Where did the rest of the pad material go? Was it in oil pan? That is crazy.

We checked when draining the oil and scraped around inside the pan ( installed), but found nothing. Maybe it evaporated?

Thank you, great heads up video.
I have a 88 2.5 litre 944S with the magnesium rotor housing which is opening up a gap.
One reason I have a gap is one of the 3 screws holding the rotor housing assembly, the magnesium backing material is broken off. So I only have really 2 screws holding it together.
Question: is the 3 litre 944S2 rotor housing compatible with my motor?

Unknown as to whether the cam gear housings are shared between the S & S2. PET will reveal that.

Also we have cut off the part inside the cam gear housing that is exfoliating. We replace it with a steel spacer and JB Weld that in place. Way cheaper than the factory replacement part in magnesium.
