  • Today I show you how to change the starter on your car. If I can do it - so can you! The car in the video is a 2012 Honda Accord but this should be the exact same process for 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011 models and pretty much any other car with a starter.

    Just changed my starter, worked perfectly. Thanks guys! I would note that the wire aspect of it is likely the most annoying part. I had to bend the wire a little bit to actually get it to fit on properly again. It took me an hour just to work that part out. Otherwise the change is not super difficult.
    Make sure you guys fit the bottom bolt on first and then the top to make sure the starter is in place properly -- if the fitting is off, the wire bit won't get on properly.

Still troubleshooting to is if it's the battery, or relay/fuse/ignition switch. But i know it will be very useful instructions you gave in this video both in technical and safety aspects.

      @@PeaceLoveAndGuns just replaced it yesterday after troubleshooting and confirmed with O'Reilly's. They tested the old starter and it didn't even run. Just the same 1 click sound from the solenoid. New starter in thanks for your video and car started right up. Note for others: take off the bracket that hold the hose instead of just the U shape, and take off another metal bracket next to the EGR. That will free up a lot of room for your hands and the new starter to go in. I put electrical tape to secure the metal gasket to the new starter to keep that in place while wiggling it to position. He made it look easy in this video but it was actually frustrated cause the metal gasket just kept falling off.

    The reason the negative cable I'd removed first is to prevent accidentally touching ground when removing the positive first.

    What's the bolt torque spec on the starter?

    • @PeaceLoveAndGuns
      @PeaceLoveAndGuns  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not too loose, not too light! Sorry! I know it's not super helpful. I don't think we even checked the torque spec since it's not a sealing interface.

    I used a 12mm instead of the 13mm that you recommended for that top-nut, 13 didn't work, too loose. Also used 14mm instead of the 15mm you recommended for the 2 screws, same thing. Just wondering. Would have been nice for a link to PARTS.

      Took me a while to clip back that black auxiliary plastic connector. That copperish naked cable was assembled to the inside instead of around it on the outer side, thus not letting the aux connector plug all the way in. Army guy (me) made it happen anyways. Starting like a 2021 now. 👍🏻

      At this point, I don't remember. Rock Auto dot com is always a good place. At the very least, you can look up make/model/year and find the part "interchange" number so you can find the local parts houses near you and what they have in different brands. I have decent experience with amazon as well for car parts. Good luck!

  • @The0riginal

    Replacing the starter may not fix the grinding. Honda released a TSB 16-002 where the torque converter needs to be rotated to allow proper alignment of the sprocket. The video is very helpful though, it is better that there was a camera-man while you were working.

    • @MrSamPhoenix
      @MrSamPhoenix ปีที่แล้ว

      Can it be rotated by spinning the crank?

    • @The0riginal
      @The0riginal ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MrSamPhoenix no. It is necessary to uninstall the starter and remove the bolts between the flex plate and the torque converter before rotating the torque converter itself.

    • @JesseTheG_
      @JesseTheG_ 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That's for the 2013-2016 accords. Those are grinding so bad that the car fails to start at all. The 08-12 are starting fine, then grinding because the starter gear does not retract all the way. It's a different issue
