      I’ve been a Wadoryu student for 10 years and progressed to 1st Kyu. It’s changed my life for the better and want to try for Dan Grade this year but I’m really tall and muscular. My Sensei tells me I need to move faster and be sharper, but it feels impossible for me. Even my fastest moves are slower than dan Grade standard....any advice?

    • @AndoMierzwa
      @AndoMierzwa  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi Paul! Just saw this. You've been progressing for 10 years and NOW you're suddenly not good enough to advance? Or have you gotten slower recently? Of course, I haven't seen you move and I don't know your teacher, so it's not for me to judge. But I will point out that Karate is more than a belt. You train to better yourself and your skills. As long as you're doing that, forget the belt. Especially if it's impossible for you to satisfy your teacher! Just train!

    You really got me there laughing on the "What If.." scenario.
    When i was teaching a class about Escrima and disarms, got this guy ruining everyone trainings by forcing his "what if" idea throughout the lesson.
    Had to kick him out.
    How to handle the persistant one?

    Hopefully I will do well in my classes :) I've done a bit of my own martial arts and am now joining a offical school to learn more and have a teacher to help me. I'm just really scared of being very alone in what I love as I'm a very shy person when it comes to talking than doing stuff. XD Hopefully all goes well in my first class lesson though as this is the first time I ever joined something like this or done anything exiting.

    I like what you said about the plateau and how the learning process works. It's so true that we see those sudden jumps only after a long time being "the same." Too many people say the same thing, that things start to click and come together. Your brain is always working, even if you can't sense it at the time.

    Oh snap. I've been a member of a dojo for over 2 years now, and for the first year and a half was attending every single day every class I could, working out and learning and practicing etc. Then I hit the wall- I knew most of the drills that we were going to be doing, I knew what I was good and bad at, and I reasonably knew my limits and abilities, so I got bored. When I was bored attendance dropped dramatically. Tonight was the first night of me coming in in well over 3 months, and I learned how much my body had degraded in the time away: technique was still there, but the cardiovascular fitness to keep my breath and stay active for longer just wasn't there at all.
    This video helped out amazingly with point number 5. I think it may be a while before I stop attending again.

    Sensei..I was VERY fortunate to have had several Senseis and a Sifu (Currently ! :) whom have and do try to instill these very Prinicples...there is ALWAYS a stinker!! and its rough...who wants to partner up with that?!? Especially in an art that has infighting , grappling or just in close for whatever ...NOTEBOOK..!! I am so thankful that my very first sensei...(c. 1983) Instilled that in me...and my current Sifu (GM) said to me last year..."You've basically rewritten my entire system manual" !!! GOOD for you!! how it should be....but I must admit...even being a retired Paramedic-Inst.....the wipes is something I never considered!! I assure you, it will be added....Great vid...thanks ! • @ItsJustMe0585

    For the questions, is it bad to ask WHY something is done the way it's done? I've always found the best way for me to remember things in class is to get an explanation for why, rather than just straight memorization. (I'm asking this in good-faith)

    • @AndoMierzwa
      @AndoMierzwa  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Of course, understanding aids learning, so having a teacher who lays out reasons ahead of time is helpful! On the other hand, you could stand around playing the WHY game all day and never get to actually practicing! 😁 So, I’d say get a basic idea of what you’re doing, then play with it a bit. Your next question will be informed by some experience which is good for everyone. Happy training!👍🏼

  • @nickpelov
    @nickpelov 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I started not long ago. I agree to everything but the notebook. Well maybe for some people it's a better way to learn stuff, but there are NOT too many things that you have ro make effort to remember. You'll be doing the same stuff all over again and you will be corrected all the time. Weather you know what should be doing and can't focus on everything or you forgot you will still be reminded. Forms and katas are the only thing you may want to write down, but we have youtube now days - you can learn 90% of the form/kata from youtube and then it's quite easy to focus on the parts you got wrong or were shown wrong in youtube. Well that's me - I've never had a notebook at school. Different people, different approaches.
    *The "get early" tip is the best one - great impact with very little effort*. And it's not "sometimes" that you feel like you are getting worse. It's all the time (at least for me). Every time I learn something (to a very basic level) they give me something new and I feel like I'm starting from scratch.

    • @AndoMierzwa
      @AndoMierzwa  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Figuring out how you learn is part of the journey... glad you cracked your own code! The notebook is also great if you want to be a teacher someday. You can look back and remember how you progressed and have a bunch of ideas for lessons to pass on. Whatever... do your thing, sir!

    Reminded me of when I sparred with my pediatrician (he joined years after I did, though my instructor's very first student was a protege of his). While his nails were not especially long, he did scratch me accidentally when I blocked one of his punches.
    And no, there are no stupid questions, merely inquisitive idiots. Funny when I did a year of wrestling because I never trained in grappling, so I had to squelch my striking habits for a bit. I had a reputation for being a skilled fighter, but I was terrible at grappling. The point was I was trying to learn something different without assumptions, but the majority of the team did not realize I was handicapping myself severely. Shoshin (beginner's mind) can be pretty rough.

    Re: white belt.
    One time . One of my advanced students were leading a class. I put on a white belt and practiced with the class. After wards , a new student, who did not know me, came up and asked me why I am wearing a white belt? - because you seem to be very good. much better then a beginner
    I replied - I'm a "permanent white belt" and smiled
    New kid said - I want to be a permanent white belt too 😊
