I’m an American. So funny to hear Phil’s confusion over what a pie is. My brother is married to a German and they live in her hometown in the Black Forest. They came to the US for Thanksgiving one year and she volunteered to put the desserts out after the meal. She was not at all familiar with American pies so she carefully removed each one from their pie pans and transferred them to large serving platters where she assumed they’d be much easier to cut up, just like cake. Of course each pie completely fell apart in the process! She was mortified but we all thought it was charming and a good lesson to all of us that things that are ‘normal’ in one culture can be unknown in another.

NOTE: We are NOT saying one country is better than the other! These are a lot of German products you can't find in the US, but that's not the topic of this video. That's another. 🙃🙂
We know that you can probably make delicious homemade versions of most of these items. We have been doing that for some of them, but it's still interesting to see how something so easily available in the US is near impossible to find in Germany! Let us know if there are any other food products/items that you miss! 😀

A tip from someone who is also living outside the states.. You could order ranch season packs and taco 🌮 seasoning, the best are the big ole Mccormick taco seasonings because they last foreverrrr!! Better yet if you have family who can send you a bottle or two from Costco. Once you have ranch seasoning packets a lil of milk + mayo + mix well + cover & let thickin in the fridge viola you have your own Hidden Valley ranch dressing.. You add some sour cream too for taste if your rather have a ranch dip rather a dressing. As for the burritos 🌯 once you got your taco seasoning all you need is to cook some ground beef with taco seasoning. To make salsa tomoto light mixed to chunky consistency + some salt + taco seasoning + hint of lemon + maybe throw some green or red bell pepper in the mix and viola. Black beans (to make refried beans) and wraps are typically easy to find wherever you are.., including of the other topping you'd like on your burrito.. Well.., maybe not Mexican rice that's a tough one..

Same here! Though homemade Mac and cheese (like a 10 cheese mix with truffle oil) versus kasespatzel is a hard one for me, they are both so good! We have a Bavarian restaurant operated by an elderly German couple in my state so I drop by there every now and then to get my fix. My best experience with kasespatzel was in a small cabin in Saalbach Hinterglemm in the Austrian Alps where I was snowboarding for the week, the owners brought out a massive cast iron pan that served 5 of us; had to restrain myself from taking other peoples’ share haha.

Andreas Rehn I’m not sure what kind of wings you are eating. Chicken wings are usually coated in a hot sauce, of which you can choose varying heat levels. If you get hot ones, the ranch and veggies are used to cool down the heat in your mouth so it doesn’t build too much. BBQ sauce is totally different than the buffalo sauce or other hot sauces used to coat hot wings.

I think it's time for you guys to pay the Netherlands a visit. Quite some foods you are talking about we actually have here.
    - There're Asian (mostly Indonesian) stores everywhere called 'toko' and they're usually pretty cheap.
    - You can by cheetos everywhere, just not the flaming hot ones though.
    - I've seen more and more places selling reece's peanut butter cups.
    - There's a chain restaurant called 'Bagels & Beans'. Guess what they serve there.
    - Pies... well, that's a local specialty of Limburg. They're called 'vlaai' and you can find them with anything: apples, cherries, apricot, custard, rice, etc.
    - About the waffles + savoury things: over here we don't eat waffles a lot. But we do eat pancakes with anything like bacon, cheese, ham, salami, even mushrooms and onions. And it's a dinner thing, not brunch :)
    - And lastly: cookies. Well, that's originally a Dutch word (koekje) so you can already guess we Dutchies no a couple of things about cookies. Off course, they're not the same cookies as in the US. But there's definately a wide variety of both hard and soft cookies.

Hey Deana and Phil, concerning your question for Asian Food supplies: as my mom is Korean and we grew up with Asian Meals most of the time, here in Germany in Düsseldorf there are some Japanese/Korean or maybe also other Asian Food supply stores which are kinda big. Some of those stores also offer order options via Internet where you can also order bigger amounts. In Bonn, where I live there are also some smaller stores where you can find basic food supplies. Actually all those supplies are a bit more expensive than the normal price when you buy it f. ex. In Korea or Japan. But it's ok and if you order bigger amounts the price performance ratio is ok. I love all your clips and hope there will be continually more. 😊

There are a few rare shops in Germany that sell Cheetos. Still expensive, but it’s a option. My local Turkish store have Cheetos one time a year, and i always buy so much of them if I spot them. 😂 And there are „Fishers Shops“ that open up all over Germany the last year, they have so much US Snacks, but kind of expensive. And Beastmode Germany (Online Shop) have a American Cheatday category, where you can find a kind of Cheetos. They had the OG Cheetos in the past, but I can’t find them at the moment on their shop. 🙈 And I would like to have more Mexican restaurants here. I’ve never ate Mexican food, but I would love to eat a fresh made Mexican burrito or taco. 🥰😋

Of course it's pretty much a nobrainer that, when you live in non-metropolitan Germany, that the supply of Asian groceries is limited to what a standard supermarket offers. However you can always order Asian groceries online, if the offering in your local supermarket is not according to what you expect. Since the US has a very high number of immigrants from various Asian countries, the demand for Asian groceries is very high, hence you will find a good supply of them more or less in every neck of the woods. I live in the outskirts of Munich, so luckily I have access to a large variety of Asian markets, that offer most ingredients that I need for my Asian cooking; even the more exotic ingredients like Sui Mi Ya Cai or Pixian Doubanjiang etc...!

Cheetos, Poptarts, and Hersheys can all be bought (for normal prices) at major grocery stores in Poland (and I think, the Czech Republic). In these countries you can also buy Tide laundry detergent. Major supermarkets like Carrefour, Auchan, Delhaize, and Tesco have them. You can also find Hersheys stuff in Berlin for some reason.
For bagels, check Joshua Weissman's recipe on TH-cam, he does a pretty straightforward one! For Asian stuff, I think you're close to Hannover, there were a few Asian supermarkets there in 2017 (and they should still be there); walking around while waiting for a train I found 3 or 4, and they were of a normal size, not much smaller than in the US! Wonton wrappers will be with the frozen stuff; they don't usually have them at room temperature.

Even McDonald’s in Canada gives out plum sauce with their chicken nuggets. And if you want some Cheetos of Goldfish, etc., make friends with an American service member and maybe they will pick you up some snacks from the base, or maybe they will even take you on base and you could eat at Macaroni Grill, Chili's, PF Changs, or the food court (Popeyes, Taco Bell, Boston Market, Manchu Wok, etc.). You can skip the herbs ( I leave them out. too hard to find) except the dill and it still tastes crazy good. if you don't have buttermilk you can make your own with a teaspoon of vinegar in the 1/4 cup regular milk and set aside to sour for 15 mins.
    1 cup mayonnaise
    1/2 cup sour cream
    1/4 cup butter milk
1/2 tsp. garlic powder (not garlic salt)
1/2 tsp. onion powder (not onion salt)
    1/2 tsp. dry dill
    1/2 tsp. dry chives
    1/2 tsp. dry parsley
    1/2 tsp. dry tarragon
1/4 tsp. black pepper (or a bit more)
    (just a pinch of salt)
    1/8 tsp. cayenne pepper

Hey Julie, the last 2 years I've found "BBQ ribs" at Aldi in our Dorf, but they are dangerous to eat. Like many of the meats we eat here, there are bone splinters that you could literally need an ambulance trip for.
I don't understand it but often the boneless frozen chicken breasts I buy at Aldi have the Schluesselbein (bone) stuck in them still. FOUR times now I've had to fish the bones out of my boneless chicken breasts. The good thing is, the manufacturer refunded me with a bonus and apology. And Aldi of course gave me my money back when I brought all the freaking bone pieces back to the checkout line - to the annoyance of the other customers. Aldi makes it very, very unpleasant to return anything.
So, after the first complaint, I've given up, just because of the unfriendly return policy (you must make the rest of the customers in line wait for you as you fill out a personal information form with your name and address). And everyone in line is glaring at you for whatever discrepancy you found in Aldi's food that they have to wait extra time for.
In an effort to excapt the problem, I ordered 5 pounds of de-boned chicken thighs at the local butcher. As you probably know, it's impossible to find chicken thighs, de-boned, in Germany. I paid 11 Euros and then spent the afternoon re-de-boning the chicken thighs, myself. They were full of bone pieces!
Anyway, I've also found chips of bone in many types of Bratwurst, leading me to believe that German butchers cannot really differentiate meat from bone in the butchering process. In my 37 years in America, I never found a chunk of bone in a hot dog. In Germany, I find a sliver of bone regularly in my Bratwurst. I wish I knew why, since Germany is a pork-centric country.

American seem to be addicted to pre-processed and ready to eat food. Are they able to peel a potato or to cook a macaroni ?
Maybe the cooking abilities are a topic for another video. I have never heard anybody is preparing anything, maybe beyond scrambled eggs.
Bring your cookie recipe and bake it, instead of complaining you cannot buy it already made.
Cookies are the most boring things ever. Takes 3 Minutes to prepare it and 10minutes to bake. It's 30% plain butter. Caloric bombs."Streusel" and "Streuselkuchen" is actually the thing that comes closest, by the dough, and it's fluffy and chewy (don't take the pudding stuffed version).
It's just the alternatives we have are better. I understand Deanas nostalgia , but it's not more than that. A whole in a Bun .. what a crazy idea. If you watch from top, you can see if there is cheese or salami inside ;-)

What's funny is often when I make a traditional German meal here in Germany, based on local, family recipes, I am asked to peel all the potatoes.
Why do Germans peel potatoes? Excuding Kartoffelbrei, but in roasted, soup, or grilled potatoes? In Germany they take off the peel almost for every dish, and I have no idea why the peel/skin is a bad thing.
I remove the "eyes" and then cook them with peels. What is wrong, exactly, with the skin of a potato? I recently watched another ex-pat TH-cam video where he cooked German style potatoes and he left the skins on, simply out of habit, as an American. That's where all the vitamins are, btw.

Of course there are Americans that cook. Sadly, due to the work culture (long hours, little vacation and not many paid holidays), lots of people are left tired and go for food that isn't time consuming to make. We know that it's not all healthy, but we don't feel like spending 2 more hours making dinner from scratch after we spent 9 hours at work. Things aren't like they were decades ago, both partners usually need to work in order to pay the bills. In my family, my mother never learned to really cook anything beyond simple meals because her single mother was a waitress and would eat at work. Being a single parents makes things more complicated, and there are a lot of them here. So in cases like these, the art of cooking doesn't really get passed down.

Because of these Gold Fish crackers... There is something similar i think. They are called
"Gold Fischli" in german, and "Funny Frisch" is the distributor of the product.
Over here, they only come in a very lightly salted flavour, called "original". I never saw them in another flavour. I live on the country side in very small village, so it can be, that in stores in bigger towns, they might be available in other flavours and variations.

I'm loving this video so much! Today is my birthday and since we're in lockdown in Germany, I don't get to go out for a special restaurant visit. And since we live in BFE, Germany (Deanna can explain), there are no restaurants around here that I'd go to for take-out, cuz I'd only find German Pizza and Doener, or Greek (which would be fine, in-restaurant). So I took your advice and got out one of the variety pack of Thai Curries you recommended tonight.
For my birthday, I'm making "cock"? brand Thai curry with the coconut milk I've hoarded. While watching your video, chopping the veggies. Honestly, you guys made my birthday better. I'd rather have a good curry than a take-out Corona-Greek.
If you find anyone who can find Cheetos (orignal) please publish it! And the Germans who will say, "There is Ranch dressing here" don't know about Hidden Valley Ranch, which I get every year for Christmas from my mom from home (the packets, which should be mixed with BEST FOODS/HELLMANS Mayo, but that is also very hard to find in Germany).
I love that Phil appreciates what you miss most. I mean, I grew up with Kraft Mac&Cheese too, I could eat the entire box : ) And KaeseSpaeztle has way too many Umlauts but tastes amazing, if you'rd in Bern, Switzerland (my first time, homemade). I don't think the two can be compared. In America, does anyone serve Kraft Mac&Cheese to guests? No: )
Glad that you're making homemade chocolate chip cookies. The only way. I'm just happy to hear that Phil appreciates the comfort foods of my home.

Looked into it briefly, I guess boxed mac & cheese is hard to find in the EU (and illegal in some countries) because of a yellow dye they use in the "cheese" powder. Cheez-its and the like have a preservative that was illegalized in the EU.

We have Cheetos and boxed Mac and cheese here in Austria. It is found in specialty shops called "snack shop" and they specialize in us products and are very popular with teenagers - sour patch kids, reeses, Swedish fish and sodas are standard favorites. Cookies on the other hand are not very popular in Germany, more like fresh pastry and cake like Gugelhupf etc. Asian supermarkets are all over here, you can even get Mexican food at Asian supermarkets. One thing I'm missing though is taco bell and Tostitos lol. Graham crackers are known as "Digestives" and come from UK, you should look them up.

Hello you 2, I grew up with three cultures (Thai, German, US) all mixed together. Best of all. I live in Nuremberg, Franconia (Bavaria). We have here many and large Asian stores in which you really get everything. Spring rolls and also Wantan paper. Soy sauce about 750ml. costs 2.30 € if it is expensive, but it keeps me for about 3 months and we cook a lot. I believe that we are pretty lucky here in Nuremberg because we have some Mexican food. Which really tastes very authentic but in the US it is just better. I miss Coffeemate Hazelnut so badly. Here in Germany its 7€. for one. This is crazy, thats why my Mom send me 2 times a year a big package filled with Reeses, Coffeemate and so on. Best way to get it faster, is to find Soldier friends. On base they have everything what your heart is craving for. By the way I love your videos. :)

If it's like the British food store in NYC or the one in Northampton MA, or at World Market, everything is 4x the price it would be in its home country. When I come back from the UK I have jars of chutney and tubes of Hob Nobs (oatmeal cookies). Hob Nobs are often a £1 on sale in the UK and are $5-6 in the US. Amazon is no better. I window shop at Sainsbury's online just for vicarious food thrills.

Which explains the lack of mac & cheese, cheeze-it, cheetos, ranch mix, etc. Your Southern BBQ comment was true on for most of Europe, though my wife and I did randomly find a whole hog BBQ place in Edinburgh called Oink.
