Mary needed to understand that this was just a harmless game and the demons and devils were not real. Lots of kids play it and most of their parents have no problem with it because it's harmless. I love what Tam's dad said to her: he is spot on. On the other hand, it also makes you feel bad for him for what he went through, although we already knew what he went through because Tam told us all about that because in episode 2 when he first appeared.
This is the first time we see Herschel (Billy's dad). I have mixed feelings about him. Initially, I thought he was dumb because he was concerned that the kids had their pants down and there was zero reason to think that was going on. And he is kind of dumb because he had difficulty understanding Mary's concerns. I get that he doesn't agree with them, and neither do I, but it means he doesn't know Mary very well despite having lived next door to her for years. However, whether he is dumb or not, he is absolutely right. As long as they weren't grabbing people inappropriately or pulling pants down, there was no problem. But then he went back to being dumb when he tried to invite her over (though she's married) and then he just killed a chicken for no reason. My feelings about him remain mixed through his entire run on the show as he continues to do some good things mixed with some bone-headed things. The actor eventually left this show because he got his own show, "Bob Hearts Abishola," which debuted when season 3 of this show began, so his last appearance is in season 2. But in the later seasons, his absence becomes an important plot point.
His wife/Billy's mom is possibly my least favorite character on the show. She's not in this episode but if you haven't already seen her (I assume you've watched some episodes that haven't been posted here yet) you will soon enough. She's atrocious in season 1. She has moments of decency later on but she never becomes a character that I like.
5:44 Yup. Pastor Jeff. He is going to become a significant character. He's not really a main character (some sources list him as a main character but he's not in every episode so I don't know why), but he is one of the most significant side characters on the show, whether you like him or not. Personally, I think he's a decent character with good intentions. But when he acts on his beliefs, it's not so good. In this case, he suggested Sheldon go to Sunday School when he had done nothing wrong to begin with and doesn't believe in God anyway, so I didn't really like that.
    7:52 Yup.
I like it when George and Mee Maw team up against Mary. This happens several times because Mary is often wrong. When she's wrong, you need other authority figures who are right and who will fight her, and Sheldon has that with his dad and Mee Maw. In this case, they helped him discover other religions.
In this episode we see Ms. Hutchins (the librarian) again. She is one of my favorite characters.
Ira is a nice guy. I like when we see him.
12:01 Me neither. There are things I like about Mary, but this is something I don't like about her. Sadly, she isn't going to stop attempting to do this. And it isn't just Sheldon that she attempts this with. At least we know you won't do this to your kid.
12:30 Correct! A religion is his decision and should only be his decision.
This is one of my favorite episodes. Sheldon learned Dungeons and Dragons. He then learned about religions. The dream with 1 and 0 is one of my favorite scenes. And I would choose Mathology, the only religion based on facts. Being in Texas with a mother like this wasn't easy, and Sheldon did everything right. Plus, it's the only episode that has all of the following characters: Tam, His parents, Ms. Hutchins, Billy, Herschel, Ira.

The way you edit these videos is so good. Like no other reaction youtuber is able to cut it so perfectly that no important information gets lost while also not getting flagged by copyright. You are amazing, love your videos!

@ You’re welcome. I love her videos, also. Have been subscribed since she started TBBT. In the first video of this show they tried a different editing style. That’s when she mentioned her editor. Enjoy!

The sad thing Is that back in the '70s and '80s during the heyday of the satanic panic there was real fear among religious conservatives like Sheldon's mother that games such as dungeons & dragons was a direct path to Satanism, Hell and animal or human sacrifice.
What we see her character doing is disturbingly realistic to what was actually happening at the time.

The actor, Billy Gardell, who played Billy's dad is the real-life nephew of my ex. Pretty trippy. I went to a couple of his standup comedy shows. He was so funny that you laughed so hard it was easy to miss the jokes.

I remember when this first came out and my friend had to go to a real-life witch shop to get the pieces. About 5 years later it came out for real in the toy stores. People got hooked to this game and so in tune with their characters, that is if they died in the game, the player actually killed himself. I was going to church in those days, and I heard about that going on and it made this game considered as evil

You may already know this, but the actress that plays Sheldon's mother. In young sheldon is the daughter of the actress that plays sheldon's mother in the big bang theory.
That's why they look so much alike.

this ep gives me PTSD of being this age in Texas.. asked not to come to religious ed anymore because I asked too many hard questions... heard out different religions only to get fire and brimstone threats from 'religious folk', and had a chance to start playing DnD taken away for the same reasons. ack!!! so glad to be out of that backwards place. Note the 3 most awkward socially isolated kids found something to bond over.. and Mary's insistence on sticking her nose into everyone's business made life more difficult for all of them. A character trait that does NOT improve. If it were not for some of the other character and their story arcs, I doubt I would have finished the series. Very frustrating... though maybe it just hits a tad too close to home

It is said that before entering a town, Martin Luther would find out what the popular pub songs were, write new lyrics to the tunes, and then teach it to the townsfolk. When told it was "Devil Music," Luther replied, "Then why should the Devil have all the good tunes?" That's more or less my approach to contemporary Christian music, the kind you hear on the radio. Some are good, others make me want to go to my hymnal.
There are some things that get false attacked for being too dark or occult. Harry Potter is one, but it's actually a good example of the Christian Myth, which is the telling of the Gospel story outside a Biblical narrative.
Mary did come at it a little hard and that's the point - she is Hollywood's caricature of Texas Baptists in the 1990s, but to a lesser degree than Pastor Jeff (whose a Hollywood caricature of religion in general). That being said, of all the religions in the world, there is only one empty tomb.

the funny thing about religion and forcing your kids into it is it rarely sticks like for example my child hood best friend his mother forced him to go he couldn't miss a day when we were in boy scouts and away camping for a weekend she'd come out sunday morning to pick him up early. then there's me I only went with him when I slept over the night before. i now as an adult go to church every Sunday and he doesn't our views flipped. another funny fact about the people ar that church is I wasn't allowed to talk to the girls in the youth group the parents thought id get them pregnant. fast forward to us all in our thirties I'm the only one from that youth group who didn't have a child let alone the ones out of wedlock like the pastor's daughter becoming a mother before she started high school

It is a kind of a take on "Stranger in a Strange Land" by Robert A. Heinlein. Someone who grew where there was no religion, read the Bible. He concluded that since God was everywhere, therefor he was God and started his own religion. I was raised Roman Catholic. I walked away from religion in 11th grade. I believe in Nature, which covers the Whole Universe.

i know that bothers people when the parents are trying to convince their sons into a religion (specially christianity) but the reason behind it is literally the salvation of their souls, so is 100% justifiy
