I love when the dean tests Sullivan she describes a boy who's afraid of snakes, in which case a roar wouldn't work... Boo's monster is Randall, when she saw Sully roaring she didn't scream, she cried
I always appreciated the 'sobering' message of this movie. That sometimes there are things you just can't do, for one reason or another, no matter how much you want to. But the skills, knowledge, and mentality you developed trying to achieve it can make you exceptional at other things you might enjoy just as much. That idea hit me pretty hard retrospectively when I was just finishing college, as I'm sure it did many others.
Pixar has been doing that a lot lately, it tries not to talk down to their audience and shows that there are harsh truths to reality. Soul showed that even if you reach your dream doesn't mean you'll be happy, Inside Out 1 and 2 went into the struggles of adapting.
I love the message of the story and it is one you never hear: Sometimes you just don't succeed, no matter how hard you try, and that is okay. You can find other things you are good at, other things you love.
4:50 Children having their own bedrooms is a relatively recent thing, but if monsters were developing pretty much parallel to humans then it only would've become something effecting on monster culture when they started developing their own version of the electrical industry. I also remember in the special features of the MI DVD as a kid that there was a small animated short that explained "Mans" and "Mons" used to live side by side but always disagreed and fought until the Mons hid themselves away and eventually became monsters while the Mans "lost their 'S'".
The fact that this movie was made 12 years later after the first film means that much of the audience from that movie were at least preparing for college themselves during this movie’s release. Pretty great timing. Also, the reason Monsters University works is because it weaponizes the audience's knowledge of the future against them. It KNOWS it's a prequel. We know that Mike won't become a scarer, but the movie spends most of its runtime fooling us into believing it might happen, so when the rug-pull happens, it's brutal and shocking. It also has the message that no matter how hard you want a dream and how much you try to make it happen... some things aren't meant to be and that's actually okay because then you can get a dream that's even better for you.
The similarly large gap between Toy Story 2 and 3 (11 years) worked the same way. Many of the kids who had seen 2 were getting ready to go to college when 3 came out (and those who had seen the original Toy Story when it came out, like me, were in college by the time 3 came along).
This is gonna be so silly but I'm a 31 year old man and this was the reaction i was excited for the most this week because this is my 2 year old daughter's favorite movie and we watch it together all the time
What I really love about this movie is that Mike do belong to the Scaring Floor just not in the way he thought. And sometimes dreams change and come back in ways you never imagined but that are fulfilling
12:23 Well that's the "glass half empty" conclusion. Thankfully it's the real message is the good ol' "Know your strength, learn to accept and move past your limitations to achieve something bigger."
The lake scene is one of my favourite scenes in any Pixar movie. Such a well handled message in this movie and one that I know will resonate with many people
I love how it's a greyscale background, it fits so well in the context of the scene. Usually pixar doesn't have that kind of background in their works, but here it works marvelously.
"Did the monsters world exist only after the creation of bedrooms for children?" I don't see why it wouldn't. They just wouldn't have had scream power, like how humans definitely existed before we discovered how to use electricity.
The lesson I would gather from this movie isn’t that “Oh if you’re not naturally gifted enough to be what you wanna be so give up” it’s more along the lines of realizing what life gives you and using it to your advantage. Life is about making sacrifices sometimes. Sure you can TRY to be the thing you wanna be, but if it ultimately doesn’t work out, you still have other opportunities in life to try out your other skills, and that’s what I believe Mike ends up doing. Sure he really wanted to be a Scarer, and he was given the opportunity to try it his best. But that’s the thing with people. Not all of us are the same. We all can’t do the same things as others sometimes. But we all have gifts in being the best at something that is beneficial to not just ourselves, but to others as well. Just like how Mike found out that his smarts help Sulley become a better Scarer, and eventually becoming the BEST Scarer in Monsters Inc. So in what I can take from this is, if you really want to achieve your dream, then go for it, but if it doesn’t work out, it’s not the end of the world. You still are useful, you can still do good in other things. Perhaps theres a part of you that’s begging to come out that you haven’t recognized yet. And when you finally figure it out it WILL take you to higher places.
I’d say the message of the movie isn’t that “you shouldn’t do things you aren’t made for,” I see it as more like, “you may have dreams to be other things, but it’s okay if you aren’t those things”
The actor who voiced the abominable snowman was on a show called cheers that ran for 11 seasons. I think they put him in the mail room since he played a mailman in that show. Either that or it is a huge coincidence.
This movie’s message is truly heartwarming: university is a wonderful journey, but it’s not the only way to achieve greatness. Dreams can be reached through countless paths, each unique, full of opportunity, and just as meaningful. 💖
I appreciate the movie's message that sometimes, there are immovable obstacles to living your dream, but you can still get as close as possible, and that can be enough.
I honestly like this movie just a LITTLE more than MI. MI is a masterpiece, but this movie actually does a fantastic job of giving an ACTUAL lesson on dissability! Edit To Add: Monsters at Work on D+ explored the aftermath of Mike an Sully reworking Monsters Inc. to work on laughter. Might be worth a react.
I definitely enjoy the message of this film. You aren’t destined for anything, and even if you can accomplish being a part of something you love it will take some time and won’t fall into place the way you expect. But making connections and building up similar people that can do it can go a long way for you.
My only nitpick about continuity: Mike to Sully in the Monsters Inc: "You've been jealous of my good looks since the 4th Grade." Mike and Sully in Monsters University: Meets for the first time.
in the trivia portion on patreon (not sure if its in this cut havnet gotten there yet), george reads that part out and says the directors of the first movie told this movies director that its fine to change it. so theyre fully aware and deliberately broke that continuity for the sake of better story telling
the movies literally better because they only met each other, Sorry but i just cannot stand when people complain about unplanned prequels. What do you expect
One thing that I appreciate in hindsight about this movie is that it would have been so easy to make Dean Hardscrabble the villain in this movie. She's antagonistic, but no point does she actively try to sabotage Mike. She's just being realistic.
Regarding whether the universe existed before they had closets to sneak into, remember, children's screams are just their source of electricity, not their source of existence. They likely existed in the same way that humans existed for tens of thousands of years before we learned how to harness electricity.
You get an instant like for using a MAGIC Card! I had 6 Sheoldreds once. I had to trade 3 of them in. But I have so many good cards. Bristly Bill, Ojer Taq, Elesh Norn, Bloodthirsty Conqueror, Krenko, Rhystic Study. I love the game!
Monsters University is so underrated. It's possibly the smartest prequel of all time. It knows the audience is familiar with Monsters Inc and the characters, and it uses that knowledge against them. The audience KNOWS Mike can't become a scarer, but the movie waits until it's finally convinced them otherwise... and then quickly pulls the rug.
I'll preface this comment by saying I'm only 13 minutes in, but don't forget Mike does win in the end of Monsters Inc. They turn to laughing and he's the best at making kids laugh!
At the Disney parks they sell a beat up MU cap like Mike has. When they first came out they were hard to keep in stock. My son wanted one but we couldn’t find it for months.
I'm not crazy, this movie is as good as the original in most ways! The message, the environment, the animation, the music??? It's all so amazing and I'm glad you both liked it :)
Completely separate from this movie: Hope you guys will react to "Lucky number Slevin" at some point. One of the lesser known, brilliant movies (with a great cast)
This is actually based loosely on an 80s movie called Little Monsters with Howie Mandel and Fred Savage. The monsters would come from under the beds at night and cause trouble.Great movie in my opinion I highly suggest watching it if you haven't seen it.
If you think about it a little bit the 'message' of the The Incredibles movies, especially the first one is that there some people that are superior, different, better than others and they shouldnt be restrained, an 'ubermesnch' kind of thing going on which is a common theme in Brand Bird movies, even in Ratatuille is kinda the same, so it wouldnt be the first time Pixar has some kind of gray area message.
I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this one (not as great as Monsters Inc. but it's still a fun time). Hoping you do the first three Toy Stories, A Bug's Life, Finding Nemo/Dory, Ratatouille and Luca soon!
The best Thumbnail in TH-cam-History 😂

It's definitely up there... I mean there's a few that TH-cam has taken down over the years I vaguely remember but it's on the podium still

Unfortunately this movie came out when I was older. I could’ve used that message when I was younger. Because I had to learn the hard way.
I love the message of the story and it is one you never hear: Sometimes you just don't succeed, no matter how hard you try, and that is okay. You can find other things you are good at, other things you love.

I honestly like this movie just a LITTLE more than MI.
