This is something like a 2nd Newport 65'. Shocking for live audiences. Never seen him play and move like this. And surround by a young band with a new-wave appearance.
That's why he should have toured with this band, it would have been revolutionary. "The voice of a generation" backed by an Los Angeles Chicano punk band and heading into a New Wave direction.

People are putting this down but this is so rock n roll its refreshing. Not slick and polished and boring and predictable. Bob always had a good helping of punk in him. Listen to the Hard Rain album. And if you wanted to hear Jokerman like the record, well, listen to the record. Thisvis what rock n roll is and should be. Spontaneous and on the edge. This was gloriously sloppy and straight up rock n roll. Dont like it? Go back to sleep

Somebody handed him the wrong key harmonica took a second to get the right harp in hand. The rest like you say was raw rock.

Even the problem with the missing harmonica was perfect as it prolonged this classic....
It wasn’t missing he just grabbed the wrong key @ first e.g. the wrong one in fact judging by this lame ass performance I can’t even determine if he ever found the right one . I love my Bob but I’ll never pretend that this was a great performance certainly not just to appear and sound hip . This is a train wreck that only he could get away with .

Edit: and honestly, if you can't tell that the harmonica solo is in the correct key then you've got a bad ear for music

I've been a huge fan of Mister Dylan ever since 1963. But this particular night I would like to have heard something from Blonde on Blonde or "Go away from my window leave at your own chosen speed..." Or Nashville Skyline. But he likes to do the new stuff from the new album.... I get that! He's still the world's best living poet, no matter what. Thank you for all the great music, Bob and the other guys.

Best quality video I've seen of a truly incredible performance--wonderfully ragged, sloppy, and powerful! One of my favorite Dylan performances. I only wish that Bob and The Plugz had recorded more together.

Absolutely great! What a choice to have The Plugs as his band. He should have recorded and toured with them.
Tight little band...drummer killin' it. Kinda reminds me a little of when Dylan took another bunch of unknown kids from Canada and backed him on his 1965 England and U S tour including the infamous Newport Jazz Festival and Bob went electric causing ppl to freakout. That tight, little band turned out to be...The Band.

The Band didn't back him at Newport 65, that was the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, with Al Kooper in attendance.
The drummer caught my attention too. Yep. He does good. I enjoyed this drummer.
That drummer was none other than Charlie Quintana. You may recognize some bands he solidified with his monster talent.. The Plugz, Joan Osborne, The Cruzado’s, Izzy Stradlin, Social Distortion. And oh ya, Bob asked him to tour with him which he did. Cheers

This was the era and album Infidels that got me hooked on Dylan. Knopfler, Mick Taylor, Sly and Robbie for sidemen. What could possibly go wrong? Nothing!

Well I really dont think this would work as well on a big arena stage. That lead guitarist is very raw for example. But I get you, if id sound anything like Jokerman here, id but the tickets

I think maybe, after a few more gigs, these guys may have gotten into becoming a real cool groovy little band for sure. Not ready for the big arenas, correct… not at this point right away anyway. But maybe for a smaller type tour possibly. There are so many “what ifs” here certainly. But then again, so what right? Ha!
And you are right @peterburlin8198. That quirky guitar player was pretty damn raw in those days. Fortunately I think he’s still raw & quirky, and he’s also gotten a little smoother at it all too, if I do say so myself.
It’s also kinda wild to still be talking about this one sliver of a live moment 40 years ago inside the huge musical output of Bob Dylan. Seems there must have been some impact achieved by it, like it or not. Such is life at its best imho.

He just marches to his own drummer- always has and always will. Doesn't like playing " the showbiz game" but Dave L is a well documented fan even if part of the establishment.

Great performance! Ah yes...I remember the bassist, Tony Marsico, from Matthew Sweet's band in the 90s.
Bobby certainly deserves these accolades wherever he goes. Being complimented sincerely by the host that invited him on his show, is way up there in complimenting him.

I never fully appreciated Dylan until I very recently saw these few songs with the Plugz, and the footage is like a Rosetta stone for a guy who grew up on punk rock...it all makes sense now

I’m not sure he ever got the right one. That…um…solo…was gloriously out of tune and completely devoid of musical content.

I do agree. I have seen him live much less present and "giving" as he is there.
Any longer-term fan knows he's cantankerous, but makes him no less brilliant.
But Letterman knew how to reach people who are "real", so there's that. I do think he's responding to Dave's vibe.
and the cool thing about this performance is bob is playing ronnie woods 1957 pristine Fender Stratocaster, one of the main guitars of the rolling stones.

Have seen him many X. I often walk away pissed saying never again cause of mumbled lyrics barely recognizable tune even of his classics. Plus
doesn't acknowledge the audience-- us his devoted fans. Then a few years go by he comes to area again and boom.. I buy tickets just to be in the
same room as this legend. He got me again. Coming to Philly 11/30, small venue tickets purchased! And I can't wait.

The Plugz are the backing band - Bobby rehearsed with them briefly and then did this performance on the Letterman show -- after the show -- Bobby never saw them ever again.

On previous upload- sound guy wrote a long post about the mixing up with giving bob the wrong harmonica… 2 min felt like 2 months. What a great performance.
Daniel Romano recorded the entire Infidels album as how he thought it would have sounded had Bob recorded the album with this band. How cool is that?
I saw Zimmy twice live and although i expected it the way he makes songs unrecognizable live until halfway through fustarated the hell out of me . I'll never ever buy a ticket to his shows again!
Now you might understand what happened in England when they booed him and called him a traitor.Some people just don't get that the lyrics are really the most important thing.Rock and roll via folk just happens to be what Bob was given to work with.It is ok!

I got to see Dylan play with the Grateful Dead - loads of fun! Also saw him many years later with an all acoustic band in a tiny college gym, and many times in between. Of course I love the classic 60’s & 70’s albums but for some reason a World Gone Wrong is one of my favorites, even though he’s not using original material. So much soul in that album.
