  • The Sony ICF-SW7600GR AM FM LW Shortwave Portable Radio is brought out for some serious Evening Medium Wave Band Scan Work. Sony no longer produces Shortwave radios, and that is a shame. The AM Synchronous Detection circuit is amazing on this model. A wonderful receiver if you can find it a decent price.

Overall, with the help of a Terk Advantage Loop, expect to pull in distant AM Stations with ease. The radio also has a AM External Antenna jack that works great with passive, and active antennas.

No Todderbert video would be complete without comparing the radio with his favorite Iron Man deck of cards! 😀
I passed up buying the 7600GR back in 2007 when I saw it for the first time at the Sony Center at the Suria KLCC mall (adjacent to the iconic Petronas Twin Towers) in Kuala Lumpur. At the time I owned the earlier 7600G model and SWL'ing as a hobby took a backseat, probably due to the poor local propagation conditions that year.
Years went by when I finally decided to fire up my 7600G from storage only to find out that I had forgotten to remove the alkaline batteries from the battery compartment and they leaked badly. The radio malfunctioned and wouldn't turn on.
The Sony service center would not repair the 7600G as it was a long discontinued model and Sony had already stopped selling the 7600GR in Malaysia. 🙄
Having been mostly confined at home due to the Covid-19 lockdown had rekindled my old SWL'ing hobby (I remember it as my earliest hobby as an 8 year old with my dad's Sanyo Transworld radio) and thanks to this channel, I'm back to band scanning with my new Tecsun PL-660 and 330 receivers! 😀📻👍🏼

Try connecting the AN-200 loop to the 330. It really improves AM reception. I have those receivers and just got the Eton Elite Executive. They make a great team.

@@baneverything5580 Thank you for recommending the AN-200 loop antenna, but MW DX'ing is virtually useless where I live. In Southeast Asia, there are no AM stations in operation except for two distant regional transmitters in northern Thailand and probably one in Myanmar. Neither broadcast in English, Malay or Indonesian - the only three languages that I'm able to comprehend.
Malaysia has fully switched to FM stereo by the late 1990s while Singapore has gone analog FM and digital radio quite some time ago. Even neighboring Indonesia, with its vast land area and its 13,000 odd islands has already converted to FM and digital radio. That said, the last time I did medium wave band scanning was in the 1980s when Malaysia still operated AM stations.
Indonesia used to have regional MW and SW stations in the last century but they were all low powered, local transmitters and were too weak to be received in Malaysia. The only exception was Radio Republik Indonesia on shortwave (11785kHz if I'm not mistaken) which could be heard in the daytime but their overseas service has been terminated since 2010, presumably to cut costs.
As for LW, I've never heard any language broadcast even as a kid, save for non directional beacons that transmitted repetitive Morse codes. Today the long wave band is practically quiet except for background static and one faint non directional beacon.
I'm actually envious of folks who live in North America where AM stations are plentiful. FM radio doesn't interest me so what's left for me is shortwave broadcasts. With a simple reel wire antenna I can get transmissions from South Korea, Japan, Vietnam, Thailand, Taiwan, the Philippines, Saudi Arabia but the most overpowering stations are from China.
Probably not at all surprising since Tecsun radios are made in China! 😁😁😁

@@StratmanII I`m moving soon and can`t wait to test my shortwave radios with very long antennas. I have 350 feet of wire to try with the PL-660 and the Eton. It will be interesting to connect an antenna like that to the 330 to see how well it brings in long range daytime AM stations.

@@pauloedsonpaim3945 Thanks for the compliments! Actually as a teenager I had also borrowed my dad's Aiwa TPR-930 stereo cassette radio player to listen to shortwave. It had a very sensitive SW front end but sorely lacked a fine tuning knob, which makes precise tuning difficult. That Aiwa could tape broadcast programs and I often borrowed it to record Radio Australia in the evenings.
In 1981 my dad brought home a surprise that he bought in Japan - Sony's first digital portable multi-band radio, the ICF-SW2001. He didn't get the power adapter as it was incompatible with the 240 volt EU standard which was widely used throughout Southeast Asia, so we had to use expensive D sized alkalines. I was totally blown away by that radio - a digital frequency readout, PLL synthesized receiver, LED signal strength indicators and finally, the SSB/CW mode to listen to ham signals! 😀
Sadly the Sony 2001 (not the 2001D, which came later) did not survive after a few years. I think the cheap universal AC/DC converter which I used either didn't generate a clean DC supply or the voltage was slightly more than 4.5 volts. As it turned out that radio was extremely sensitive to bad external power supply and it must have damaged the shortwave front end. FM band was unaffected though but that SW2001 was no longer useful for AM reception. 😞
I also got a new Toshiba analog multi-band field radio in 1982 for my birthday. It was a discontinued RP-2000F with a X'tal band spread dial and it really pulled in lots of faint stations with a long outdoor random wire antenna but suffered from oscillator drift after half an hour. The Toshiba took a tumble onto the floor many years later (my fault for putting it on top of a vertical bookshelf) and had internal mechanical damage.
The Toshiba service center was unable to repair it properly as the technician couldn't get all the necessary replacement parts. It could still turn on but the precise X'tal calibration mechanism could not be used anymore. I still have the RP-2000F today, but tuning the exact frequency is impossible. It served its last days mainly as a kitchen FM radio.
I stopped listening to shortwave between 1987 and 1998 but restarted the pastime when I bought the Sony 7600G in 1999. It was my first portable SW receiver but missed the experience of band scanning the Toshiba RP-2000F.
I'm looking at the tabletop Tecsun S-2000 or the S-8800 right now, but haven't made up my mind yet. That PL-990 seems to be quite an attractive model too! 📻😁

For a really nice classic radio, I reccomend the "Zenith royal 750" or any radio in the "700" series. They are extremely sensitive with a tuned RF stage and (I believe) 7 transistors and really good agc/avc. I have 3 or 4r of the different 700 radios, but the 750 is my favorite. Give it a recap/ slight alignment, and it will blow anything away, even made today.
Edit: I misspelled 4 LOL! Also, be careful with the handles, they may look fine but they crack easily. I braced mine with a popsicle stick with a piece of tape or two underneath the handle, its barley noticeable!

Well, it was my teenage nephew, not my own kid. My sister protected him like bubble wrap. Since I didn’t have some definitive, video-esque, PROOF that he took it, she blew it off. I did the best I could. I never invited him over, never showed him anything, never loaned him anything, and never shared exciting finds with him again. Basically, I lost all trust in him so I kept my distance.
