  • The Classic Sony ICF-2010 Shortwave Portable Radio is taken out for a Daytime run on the Medium Wave band. The radio is very sensitive on all the bands, and it does not disappoint :) This portable is a must for Sony Shortwave Radio Collectors and those who want one of the best ever produced.
The Terk Advantage Passive Loop is used with excellent results during this scan.

Overall, the radio is worth every penny on the secondary market. I'm actually thinking of trying to find a second one, it is that good.

A legend indeed. I wanted the 2010 for many years in the 80s. My actual 1980s radios were both from Radio Shack: the Patrolman SW-60 & DX-440. The SW-60 met its fate alittle early. In the early 1990s, I let my brother borrow it for a month and lightning struck his house. Fried it. My DX-440 lasted till the early 2000s. By that time, I was using both a SW-7600G &, 7600GR at home. And a RS DX-397 for my car (roof wire antenna, similar to NVIS type of mount). The wire was hung above the full length of the car's roof. Captively-coupled to the DX-397 antenna, no direct connect (a type of low pass, passthrough from antenna to radio). Kept most of the FM-TV noise out of the radio's SW bands. Most, not all. Worked really well when I drove away from the big cities.

The 2010 by Sony is my all time FAVORITE multi-band portable. Since mine is nearly 30 years old, I purchased a kit of basic replacement parts from eBay. So, if and when something goes wrong, I'll be ready to repair or refurbish it.

I absolutely love this radio. I bought this radio in 1982 for $350.00 in 1980 dollars about $800.00 today. Had a Panasonic analog tuning short wave radio but was hit by lightning before that an old vacuum tube shortwave radio. First Sony ICF-2010 was stolen but it had the most accurate clock checked against WWV. My second Sony ICF-2010 had a fast clock 30 extra seconds a week and was smashed by my brother so time for a new radio. My brother is no longer allowed to use my electronic gear. A 10-year gap between radios I bought a Tecsun S-8800 but disappointed it had no RDS and it had a harmonic ping using wideband on my favorite radio station WBBM-AM NewsRadio 78. A year later I bought an Eton Elite Executive and later a Sangean ATS-909X2 has RDS. Will be buying the Eton Elite Executive HD when available and Eton Elite Satellite HD with the new firmware update. I have a train carload of AAA, AA alkaline 16 AA Nickel-Metal Hydride batteries and 18650 lithium-Ion batteries. The Tecsun S-8800 uses 18650 batteries plus many ultra-bright 18650 flashlights. I am abscessed with weather emergencies and always willing to help my neighbors.

I really love the way you structure your reviews of new and classic radios, it is a great resource for people searching for information on these radios. You make it fun and that is important too! That’s what makes all of this special to me. Great job Todderbert!

You can leave the radio in the same position, tune the loop and turn only loop towards direction of the station.

They don't make tech with buttons anymore. Shame, buttons are the best user interface.

I bought one in 2003 just before they stopped making them. I have never been super happy with it. It is not in the same league as newer radios. Old stuff is not always better, the tuning feels too quick and loose , easy to bump off frequency. Sony never impressed me all that much. MW is only OK
