    All these guys were the best at the time. Use to set the VHS timer to make I wouldn't miss a race everyweek. Motoworld, the gear , the bikes, the stickers. Riding and racing everyweek with your friends, with your new bikes/gear. Best time of my life.

      Marco Ceccarelli I agree, but the kids of today will be sayin the same thing we are. Miss 2 strokes, especially the open class.

      Why would you wanna go back to the 80s. 13 channels of shit on the TV to choose from. No Internet no cell phone no TV games, you have to actually get out to do something. Personally I spend a lot of time riding dirtbike. And smoking pot was more fun when it was illegal. I’ve still got my CR 250

  • @johnschauder

    Wow, I just watched Pontiac '83 and these guys got SOOOOOO much faster in just 5 short years!!!

    • @russellhelms2835
      @russellhelms2835 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes they did. Just my opinion, but if those guys then (their high level of fitness & training) could be here racing now with the new technology; I’m willing to wager that only a handful of the newer crop of racers could keep the pace! Especially for the length of motos AND the rougher tracks?! Evidenced by David Bailey doing Triathlons after his injury & Johnny O’Mara with multiple mountain bike championships after MX and into his 50’s! Incredible...

    • @johnschauder
      @johnschauder 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@russellhelms2835 I’m going to disagree. No doubt that the older generation had loads of talent…but the nutrition and training programs that the guys are on today are far more advanced than anything that anyone was doing in the 80’s.
      I would argue that David Bailey’s and O’maras athletic careers after moto and racers today are burnt out by the age of 30 is evidence that they are training much harder today.
      The fact that the races were longer doesn’t mean much. Todays racing is more of a full sprint the entire race and I feel like back then guys would just sprint at the beginning, pace themselves in the middle of the race, and then sprint at the end. It’s all about managing their energy for however long the race is. But the tougher tracks would weed out some of the new crop of riders, for sure.
      Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying it’s better today, I just think the riders today are fitter. But I’d almost rather see the top guys drink a beer and smoke a cigarette…it gave them more personality and made them seem more normal.

    • @johnschauder
      @johnschauder 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@russellhelms2835 it wasn’t really until RC came along that riders took the training and nutrition to the next level. Now every factory rider is on a program that is head and shoulders above what Bailey and O’mara were doing. I’d wager that you could take any top 5 guy today and David Bailey in his prime and put them on identical equipment and todays riders would win.

    I'd love to know the story behind why Johnson got the modern upside-down forks, and his teammate is still on the traditional forks. If I remember correct '89 was the first year of the upside down forks right?

    • @dirtslinger1500
      @dirtslinger1500 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      TinPinFTW you are correct on 89 being the first year. They were being tested in 88. Some guys didn't like the upside down forks at first and preferred the conventional forks. Maybe that's what happened here. I hag an 89. Loved that bike.

    • @pinkeyedinkeye
      @pinkeyedinkeye 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Johnson ran both forks that year. I believe traditional outdoors.

    I not sure if I was at this race,it was more of a dream I think I was. I believe one lap from the end that big roar from the ground I think RJ pulled of a nack nack ,I remember look at him he was almost as high as were I was sitting,next to the pros by the tunnel and I remember he was standing up in the air and his right leg wasn't were I could see it was on the left side by the number plate,and I just went back to being in a dream cause first time supercross race was no words I could put into it,oh but wait let me try,just kidding,I'd been watching this stuff on video for 8 years ish,but live was just ,insane the crowd was so hiped,every second of racing was like the feeling when someone scores Superbowl touchdown,every lap,very exciting...his domination of this race is what made me a rick johnson fan, for real plus his humble podium search he one over a lot of northeastern fans I believe animosity toward the Californian after this race was gone,he was just for real, you know how it is,man I hate that rider he this,he that,then when he stranded right there those same people are like,hey could have your autograph,your the greatest...huh flakes ah that people...

      Michael Nesbitt The 1988 KX250 is one of the nicest bike I have ever ridden and I would still race one today. But I am little bit older. The best bike I have ever ridden? Probably a 1989 CR500RK which a friend of mine owned. I had the RJ (88) model back in 1988 to 1994. Kind of wish I kept it but it was time to move on and I lost the passion. Another nice bike I owned was the 1985 KX250 which was completely stock but behaved itself quite nicely.

    • @bloodinreign9992
      @bloodinreign9992 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Michael Nesbitt well that’s because they are, it’s all on the rider that can make a bike go fast

    • @russellhelms2835
      @russellhelms2835 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I must agree with you. I’ve a VERY nice 1988 KX500, which is ridden on the weekends occasionally. I’m 51yrs old, and it is a handful (must be careful of sorts) BUT it is somehow much easier to ride fast than my 1996 CR250, which is a lightswitch lightning bolt! Love them both, but the Honda CR250 very quick. The KX500 is just as quick but doesn’t seem so dangerous?! Tons of grunt though! Love 2-strokes!

  • @lect0n7

    Johnson's one of only two racers ever in motocross to win the 250cc Pro Title & the 500cc pro titles simultaneously in the same season at the same time...the only other racer to do it was Jean-Michel Bayel.... both of them did it on Honda CR500's & everyone always told me the KX500's were way faster...but a KX500 racer never won both #1 plates in 1 season... & my time in motocross startes in 1995...500s were long gone by the time I started...
