@@the_bane_of_all_anti_furry My guess is that it suffered the same problem as the German WWII Tiger tank, beautiful battlefield performance but the damn thing breaks down too easily. Maybe the Vespa isn't supposed to carry that much weight and you'd need a full fledged motocycle, so the engines gave out. We know the production run was 3 years so there was obviously a huge flaw.
@@alex_zetsu trust me theythe vespa TAP dont suffer these issue probably because of the solid and simple build of an motorbike and because an recoinless rifle is not an big deal to carry
i'm a small arms repairman in the french military and even I never heard of this monstrosity, i'll try to go throught the archives when i get the chance. i will update this comment if i find anything interesting

The M20 75mm Recoilless Rifle performed very poorly against the T34 in Korea. Task Force Smith was equipped with them and was unable to do much against the North Korean T34s.

My father rode one of these in Algeria.
He was charged with doing some business in Algiers and the base commander gave him one of these Vespas without the recoiless rifle attached. The problem is that the modified engine of the Vespa is designed to distribute weight to the right hand side to make up for the recoiless rifle on the left. As a result, these scooters were very unstable if ridden without its full combat load. Needless to say, the ride into Algiers was difficult.

When I joined the corp we didn't have any fancy smancy tanks. We had Vespas, two Vespas and a Bazooka for a whole platoon. And we had to share the bazooka! Buck up boy, you're one very lucky marine.

The Vespa 150 TAP was an anti-tank scooter made in the 1950s from a Vespa scooter for use with French paratroops (troupes aéroportées, TAP). Introduced in 1956 and updated in 1959, the scooter was produced by Ateliers de Construction de Motocycles et Automobiles (ACMA), the licensed assembler of Vespas in France at the time. Modifications from the civilian Vespa included a reinforced frame and a three-inch recoilless rifle mounted to the scooter.
The 150 TAPs mounted a M20 75 mm recoilless rifle, a U.S.-made light anti-armour weapon. It was very light in comparison to a standard 75 mm cannon but was still able to penetrate 100 mm of armour with its HEAT warhead. The recoil was counteracted by venting propellant gases out the rear of the weapon which eliminated the need for a mechanical recoil system or heavy mount.
The scooters would be parachute-dropped in pairs, accompanied by a two-man team. The gun was carried on one scooter, while the ammunition was loaded on the other. Due to the lack of any kind of aiming devices the recoilless rifle was never designed to be fired from the scooter; the gun was mounted on a M1917 Browning machine gun tripod, which was also carried by the scooter, before being fired. However, in an emergency it could be fired while in the frame, and while the scooter was moving.

A similar idea was used in Chile during the 78' Beagle Channel crisis (the almost war Between Chile and Argentina).
Chile was under a weapons embargo, so as a desperate measure; the army trained soldiers to use Dirtbikes with two LAW Rocket Launchers attached to each side of the bike, as an Anti Armor vehicle, requiring to attack head on the enemy Tanks. Esentialy, a suicide mission.

Sat on one in a French Army museum in Saumur- I had ridden Vespa's in London, and really did think this thing was the ultimate traffic buster! Lovely little thing.

I got an Idea. Something about the Boxer Rebellion. This history felt to me that it was not really known to many people. It involved multiple nations: US, UK, Germany, Spain, France, Italy, Austria-Hungary, Russia. There's even a movie about it, called 55 days at Peking.

Not every weapon that is bigger than a rifle is a "rocket launcher". Not every weapon that looks like a tube is a "bazooka".
This Vespa had nothing at all to do with rocket launchers or bazookas (same thing). It carried a recoiless rifle, which is basically a small artillery piece firing a shell.
Equating this contraption with bazookas is the same reason so many people see an M-79 40mm grenade launcher in a movie and say "he's got a rocket launcher!".

@@robertclark1669 The thing is not meant to fire on motion, the sole purpose of this vespa is to carry anti tank canon to the front line. The pilot would dismount, instal the gun, then fire. Absolutely not useful or possible to shoot on the move

First in line gets the cannon, second ammunition, when the first is killed second takes the cannon and shoots.
French paras in the 50's armed with:
- Cool folding stock bolt-action MAS36 rifles
- MAT-49 SMG's, with foldy stock & magazine, nice & compact and very good guns
- Lizard camo, good camo
- Chatelleraut M24/27 LMG's, good quality LMG's
- MAC50 Pistols, good quality pistols (and sometimes older french pistols and German Walther P38's)
- And what i learned today, god damn 75mm recoilless rifles fitted to scooters, so they basically have the most lightweight SPG ever, this is more lightweight than the Wiesel the German paratroopers used, or even a ww1 CV33 tankette or Panzer 1 outfitted with a AT gun. What a bit of kit. The fact it was used and not experimental is awesome.
Also awesome if people didn't know, is that the legendary Ural mortorbikes used by the Soviet army with the sidecars - Ural still makes a modernised model of military style motorbike with a sidecar. Idk if the Russian army use it but they damn should.

it performed well for what it was designed with the resources available at the time. With all due respect to Bob Semple's good intentions, his tank looked like a shanty town shack on tracks. also, it wasn't combat proven.

All I have to say.. Carl Gustaf m/48.. Built as a handheld Recoilless Rifle with an 84mm projectile. Came into production in 1948 and is still in service among Nato troops to this day.. And as it was built to be handheld one would think attaching it to a vespa wouldn't be a problem, weight wise or simply if the vespa would be able to handle it being fired whilst still attached to it. :P

and the vespa TAP 150 could destroy easy major part of all ww2 tanks and early cold war tanks with the 75mm HEAT shells
