ANTHRAX guitarist Scott Ian sat down with Sam Dunn in 2010 for an interview about the history of thrash for the TV series Metal Evolution. He also gave us his take on the rap metal cross-over of Bring the Noise, and how he ended up on a reality TV show with Ted Nugent. This interview excerpt is presented Raw and Uncut.

Anthrax & Public Enemy's Bring tha Noize is the greatest rap/metal collaboration ever. Way better than Walk This Way.
Anthrax gets so much shit, but now they are by far the best of the Big 4. Anthrax's openness to rap just shows how progressive they were for the time. Now people can listen to rock, metal, rap, jazz, pop, r&b, or whatever.
Judgement Night is pretty awesome.

I respect your opinion but they are no where near the best band in the Big 4... What they did was revolutionary and became huge because of it, but they should not be in the Big 4 imo. Testament, Exodus or even Overkill would be a better fit

I met these guys in Florida in '86 on the "Spreading the Disease" tour and he is still the same. One of Metal's true ambassadors and a hell of a nice dude. Godspeed Mr. Ian!

I especially feel what he was saying at the end about fans "growing up" and not listening to Metal and engaging in the culture anymore. A friend of mine and I were putting a band together. He had kids and that was the end of that. It boggles my mind. It's not like we were going to immediately start touring the world. It's a shame. You can balance your interests and still do responsible adult things. A former college professor of mine made a Black Metal album. Guess what? It didn't ruin his family and life. He still goes to Metal shows.
' You don't grow out of it' is for me the perfect way to define a metalhead. Been listening to it for over 30 years and I will surely die listening to it. 🤘😁

100% agree with the last part. I am Scott's age and grew up listening to hardcore punk and thrash. I still do today. Married with a kid too. I will never stop listening to the music I love. Great interview. :)

Spot on at the end Scott. Sure I myself still maybe single, but Metal wasn't just a high school phase. Every year since I graduated, I just keep discovering more and more bands and it just makes me want to listen to it even more.
Me loving bands like Anthrax and Deftones made me finally give rap and hip-hop a chance.

I totally agree with Ian on the you don't grow out of music I'm 41 and I still follow the scene I still go to shows, still wear my metal t-shirts, still play my guitar. everywhere I go I still jam my stereo loud in my truck. yeah I work a 9 to 5 but the other 16 hours of the day I'm watching, playing, or listening to music....... great point Scott!!!!!! The music is what its about that's why the big 4 are still around....

And man, I have heard that comment soo much "Oh I used to listen to..." and all the why's it changed.
I am 53 freaking years old, and I STILL listen to the music of the 60's, my parents music, all the rages of the 60's and 70's, AOR, to Pop (up until the 80's), certain "New Wave" bands etc., etc. Though most of those bands I listen to because of the "music" and not nostalgia like most people my age do with whatever music and AOR rock bands . . .
But I listen to ALL the bands I was into of Metal and Progressive Rock because it all had "longevity", it stands the test of time, it had lyrics that speak to me to this day, and if it was melodic, technical, brutal and more - it all resonates with me to this day with every NEW Metal/Prog band that still carries the torch of those that came before. And now as I come to think of it, may just well be the 2 genres that has grown and evolved, never died and is STILL growing, and progressing into more sub-genres. I mean that in itself is amazing.
But now, for ALL of us that were into the underground and the "obscure", now we get younger and the same fucking age -bastards that point their fingers at US with that chestnut; "You're just a hipster" - No, WE are just music lovers that are not just stuck in the 80's or 90's, but we respect and love the bands YOU didn't bother looking for beyond the radio or MTV back then, and today! Doesn't that make us respect and enjoy a wider choice of Metal?
Hell, I gotta' make time for music because it soothes, keeps me in focus and inspires me when I work (especially when I'm on freelance art gigs). It's part of my life! Thank God my fiancee loves the same music.

I didnt't want to put him down or anything. I love the guy because you just immidiatly notice in evey interview what a passionate music fan he is. He also is one of the best rhythm guitar players/riff writers of the world. I just always had to laugh super hard at those "It seems Scott Ian lives in the VH1 studios since 2001" and "How does Scott Ian manage his way into every metal documentary?" comments.
+mastermmop it wasn't just metal docs either. He also did the "I Love The..." (70s, 80s, 90,s 00,s) shows on vh1as well

im a kid from the 90s and grunge to me is one big part of my teenage years. metallica & megadeth made me listen to nwbhm and thrash then to classic rock and then blues.
Scott Ian is a true flag-bearer of metal. Great guitarist and an awesome fuckin guy. Saw them live in May with Megadeth and Overkill and the guy's energy and playing was unhuman

I've been with my wife for a decade, her favorite band is Skeletonwitch. We've lived in our current city for less than 6 months, and attended at least a dozen shows in that time. Music is not slowing down your life. Google for 15 minutes a week and support your scene, or admit that you never loved it to begin with.

the whole grunge thing was pretty interesting (and frustrating) when it happened..... one thing that has always happened is the mainstream takes what is 'underground' and therefore 'cool' and waters it down to make it accessible to those people who are too involved in their jobs and families or too lazy to discover what they like to listen to so accept being spoon-fed music by record labels and radio stations... basically the mainstream always ruins subculture by making it mainstream because mainstream has no culture of its own....
they tried in the early 90s to make metal mainstream after the undreground explosion of the 1980s but simply couldn't because metal is what it is...a hard and heavy form of music that comes with a 'dont-give-a-fuck=what-you-think' attitude that people simply will not compromise on....... we WILL NOT change out song structures for you...we WILL NOT stop swearing or censor ourselves in our songs to suit you....we WILL NOT stop moshing and slamming and headbanging to make our dancefloors friendlier places for you.... we will not sell our souls or our culture out to become more accepted by people whos acceptance we don't need, the media, the suits, the lame people who let mtv tell them whats good to listen to....
grunge was a middleground for those people....it was almost metal but it was still friendly enough and 'sing-alongy' enough to be picked up by those people...it was marketable and typically, as always happens it was swallowed up and integrated into mainstream 'culture' and like hip-hop, punk and so many other sub-cultures before it it became a washed out parody of itself until they lost interest and needed something new to sell and destroy with their mediocrity..
TheFujac Yep. The crazy thing about the whole media derived grunge scene, was that those original Seattle bands, really wanted nothing to do with that label. The music "elite" took that music and scene and ran it into the ground. Bands like AiC and Soundgarden in my opinion were keeping heavy music alive. I definitely saw it as an offshoot of heavy metal and even 70s hard rock. Metal takes on many forms. Just so happened to be an early 90s version of metal, IMO.
That last part Ian mentions here really resonates with me. I get sick of hearing that shit too, people suggesting that you "out grow" the music that's been a part of you for so long. You might move on to different bands/genres like I have but you NEVER grow out of it. That's some trite bullshit where people think they're more sophisticated somehow cause they chose to do other things with their lives. I had an ex gf that would insinuate shit like that, that because I'm of a certain age I shouldn't be going to see metal shows anymore. Music is a part of me, that will never change and I'll never give it up because of some bullshit like that.

Actually, I didn't stop listening to music because I got married, If anything I now have a partner to listen to my shit with even more...even though we can't go to shows...They are too expensive, and we got kid's. My hope is metal will still be badass when my son is old enough to go to shows.
It only takes a few minutes online to dig around and find a local show, or smaller touring band. a few more minutes to TH-cam a track and see if you like it and $15 at the door. Though I empathize with the time off it takes.
that is true, but my kid isn't old enough to watch himself without me being within a couple min away for a long extended amount of time...and honestly I don't trust most people let alone trust them with my kid, so local babysitters are out of the question unless its a mom we know personally from the local school....unfortunately these days most mothers are single moms with no time.
Music certainly takes a backseat when you get older and life becomes more about work, family, bills etc. but to put it away completely is bullshit. So throw on "At War With Satan" during your way home from work.
Music is as much a part of my life now at 47 as it was when I was 17. At times it is the one thing that keeps me from despairing when life gets soul-crushingly hard, and its the cherry on top of the sundae when life is good.
My ear has gotten more discerning these days, but there is room in my playlist for an Angel Vivaldi or a Nili Brosh as there is for Rush, Maiden, Metallica, Anthrax and Pantera. I am an admitted guitar-a-holic. If a song has good or excellent guitar work on it, chances are I will gravitate towards it, no matter the genre. I am a metalhead from the mid 80s forward, but I have always kept an open ear and an open mind.
I drive a lot for my two jobs, and sometimes you need some Sabbath, Dio, Ozzy, or Dokken to get you in the right headspace to get through your day. To give that up is to die inside, real talk. Even if you have to use music as a crutch, anything that keeps you moving forward is a good thing.

As much as i can agree that i don't relate to people that are like "i used to listen to _____." I can understand where someone might fall out of listening to a certain band or genre if they're not passionate about music, which most people aren't these days.

I've used to hated this guy because the things he's said about nu metal , but after this interview i take it back . Probably he just doesn't like what those bands in the late 90's like Korn or Limp Bizkit represented , but now that's fine with me !

I guess it is pretty simple Scott (great interview by the way): The people who stopped listening to certain music because of reasons like marriage are quite often people who weren't big fans of it in the first place. Or they are restricted in that regard by their spouse :D.
I assume their main reason to get involved with a certain genre was to be part of a scene.

Scott didn't want to sell out with rock of love or surreal life but they did make a song with public enemy! I doesn't make sense
I thought they along with early Beastie Boys created "Rapcore" The Nu-Metal stuff favors singing far more than it does rapping even though they do rap. Rapcore is the opposite. It's rapping first and that's what "Bring The Noise" was. I don't know.

Never understood why my fellow Metalheads hate the mixing in of Hiphop. Metal has cross-pollinated with Classical, Surf, Punk, Reggae, Rock, Horror movie soundtracks, and Opera...just to name a few! Back then it *was* revolutionary, but aside from "Faith No More", how much groove was in Pantera? Nu-Metal is cool and sometimes even more intense than it's non-Rap-influenced predecessors.
"Limp Bizkit" sucks, ok. Fair enough.
"Rage"??? GTFO here! They were MERCILESS.
Also, "Korn" brought us Nu-Metal. Anthrax w/PE were "Proto" RapMetal if anything.
I don't like hip/hop mixed with the metal I listen to. People say to me, oh! You're racist, or close-minded. No, I'm not. I don't like black metal or glam metal either. In fact, I find black metal, just as hard to listen to - as hip/hop. That's why there is 200 flavours of ice cream, beers, etc. When I hear hip/hop mixed with metal, I cringe. I am more guitar/string driven, over beats. When Anthrax did the collab with Public Enemy, they lost me. But hey, for every one of me they lost, they picked up a new fan that was into that style. To each their own.

There's a right and good sounding way to do rape metal, and there's a wrong ..not so good way. Bring the noise and 'attack of killer b's" was the right way. Something like say...Limp Bizkit..for example..the wrong way.

No. A lot of those guys didn't consider themselves metal because they hated the glam metal bands and they didn't want their music to be associated with that image. Also, come on. Grunge doesn't even sound like metal. There were heavy grunge bands but the only one that ever really came close to the sound of metal was Alice In Chains and it was after the Grunge wave ended. Grunge paved the way for Alternative Rock. Look a the bands that came after of the Grunge era. Most of them started out as Grunge bands like the Foo Fighters before making the switch to Alternative Rock in the mid to late 90's.
