  • For those with questions about how I manage the engine for climb. Manifold Pressure, Prop, Fuel Flow and what speeds I use and the like. This is a quick video on the techniques I use and teach for Climb with a Continental. What techniques do you use?
FlyWire is about exploring flight and the freedom this incredible experience brings us on a personal level. Flying has always captured the imagination and excitement of living life to its fullest. Hi, I'm Scott Perdue. In a former life I flew the F-4 and F-15E, more recently I retired from a major airline. I've written for several aviation magazines over the years, was a consultant for RAND, the USAF, Navy, NASA as well as few others, wrote a military thriller- 'Pale Moon Rising' (still on Kindle). But mostly I like flying, or teaching flying. Some of the most fun I had was with Tom Gresham on a TV show called 'Wings to Adventure". We flew lots of different airplanes all over the country. Now with FlyWire I want to showcase the fun in flying, share the joy and freedom of flight and explore the world with you. Make sure you subscribe if you want to go along for the ride!

I am a low-time sport pilot, utterly ignorant, and decided to learn IFR on flight simulation. Will never fly IFR IRL, but it can’t help but improve my VFR skills. Right? Just bought Rod Machado’s IFR course, and the Black Square A36 for MSFS 2020. Amazed at how finicky the engine start is (not to mention how easily you can, er, mess it up without thorough attention during flight). Watching your Bonanza playlist with religious intensity. Managing a constant speed prop seems like a black art… Anyways, thanks so much for putting your experience and insights online so that even we lowly kite-flyers can learn and improve.

Very good video Gunny. I use the same method. Pelican’s Perch says fuel flow on initial take should be balls to the wall at 31 for cooling. I start leaning to 1300 on hottest cylinder at about 3,000 ft. Your videos are so helpful! Thanks!

Gunny, a pretty good WAG for the IO-550 climb schedule is: 30 - density altitude = fuel flow. I don't have the ACFP either, and this keeps target EGT. Saw it on another site, and it works like a champ. Fellow eagle driver, BTW! 84-99. Enjoy your vids!

Setting fuel flow to a specific egt number is a bad idea, that's why analog egt gauges don't have numbers on them. I'd be very surprised if you found any flight manual or engine manual that advocated anything like this.

Thanks great video and I think the ABS folks would be interested, Mike from az

What is the difference in cruise if you use 2300 RPM or 2400 RPM? Do you cruise at 2500 RPM? Do you use 2700 RPM for the climb?

Haha, I had to do time in the third seat too! B727 but only for a year! I mis the simplicity of that plane!!

Looks and sounds like a happy engine, Scott. I have an IO-550 cylinder used for a training display. The crack runs from plug hole, around the INTAKE(!? [Huh, what?] ) valve to the other plug hole. The charter pilot did what the salesman told him to do on the B-58. Seven cylinders later....

Our climb technique in the A36 (IO-550B) is to try and keep the EGT at 1300 - 1325 and RPM at 2500 and WOT. We are based in a noise sensitive area so thus 2500. I wonder how the efficiency of the prop decreases at the RPM you use (~2650?) Running it at 2700 certainly isn't going to hurt the engine, and of course more power is produced. Keep up the great work you provide our aviation community with your very educational videos. Sorry to see your A36 go to a new home, but life moves on!

Hey Scott. Great video. It’s nice to see an experienced guy like you affirm what I’ve been doing as well. I normally see 1250 EGT on #4 on takeoff (hottest cyl). I lean to maintain that same 1250 in the climb, and I usually climb at 120kts. Same technique, I just run it a bit cooler. Thanks for the video!

Hi Scott. Really great channel. enjoying all the varied content. You have said on a few that if we had any requests for a topic? well I was wondering if you could do one about purchasing? Mainly things to really look out, pro's con's (obviously I appreciate that this is a very subjective thing) maybe things that you experienced? things you might have done differently? I know it's a huge topic, but it's an important one for some. I'm currently doing research into aircraft types, and I keep coming back to the bonanza, and recon this will be my aircraft of choice when I come to purchasing, so I'm trying to gather as much info as possible. Thanks again for doing such great videos.

Hi Scott, my Bonanza is running a IO 520. Is the 1300 a good target temp for my engine too? As always your tips are so simple yet so valuable. Thank you!

Running a J35 with IO-470. Have an engine monitor but have been tracking CHTs vs EGTs in climb & cruise. Mine doesn't run as cool as yours -- I'm seeing 340s--360s in the climb. Could be our field elevation (5k') is a factor. I assume you're primarily focused on the EGTs as they're more sensitive (change first with adjusting DA)?

Hi Scott, great video! Do you have any opposition to leaving the throttle wide open and pulling RPM back to 2500?

  • @robertwhite537
    @robertwhite537 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Great videos Scott! Your rpm is at 2650. Is that your normal climb out setting...I usually run at 2500. Thoughts? Thanks again for the great videos. ALWAYS insightful!

Does it differ between fuel injected or carb? Want to know for 182? I just monitor oil temp but operate in high area with high temperatures

Hi Scott - great video, assume that 1300* would work ok for a io470J (Debonair)? In a case where you weren't able to keep CHT down, you would just go WOT and leave it full rich, or at least not lean it as much? Love your posts on BT too, always informative!
