I really like this product. Modern looking from outside, pragmatic from inside. It's evident it was designed to lower the cost. They don't pretend to have a luxury EV, it's all about creating reasonable A to B machine for a reasonable price. I have heard you can buy the cheapest version for around 25k € in Germany (after all bonuses). That is really nice but I think there is still some space for discount. If they sell well they don't have to lower the price. We will see.
Great review as usual Bob, have to say it looks so cheap material wise, don’t like that screen sticking to high in the middle. Just to tacky! Keep it lit lad👍
Cheap materials, ok, but the display in the middle that high is very good! The lack of physical swithes in modern cars tend to take your eyes of the road and that is why new cars have to be safer, using flashy computer stuff that breaks down, or need updates that are not available after 7 years, and are very expensive :-)

I always enjoy your reviews. I find your style inimitable. In this review, although I understand what you mean, your reference to "a real" car company" irks me. The Irish price for this is insane for this 1st edition with mid sized battery (usable 58 Kw). In my local dealership it's listed as "on the road" for about €41,300. At 75 mph on a full charge it gets you 160 miles of range. At 55 mph it gets you 250 miles of range. Source: Bjørn Nyland. The car for everyone? I don't think.
Very nice BUT touch controles on staring where is just OVER engineering, physical control way better. Also touch buttons for screen, do they work with gloves on?
It’s positive that a large traditional car companies are at least having a go at offering an alternatives to Tesla. Tune in to Battery and Investor day on the 22nd to discover what cards Tesla has up their sleeve it go along with the Octovalve, mega casting and heat pump!?
Talk of the ID.3 has almost become boring, VW have really dragged their feet getting this to market. It looks to be a good car; it will have to be if VW are going to overcome their problems from diesel-gate and poor build quality over the last 10 years. Personally I would have more faith in offerings from their sub brands like Skoda and Seat - particularly Skoda, who's cars are better designed and built than the parent company imho.
Richard Worton Can only agree with that. It could have been done so much better looking like it wasn’t stuck on, it screams cheapness over quality. It’s very as anyone in the U.K. would understand Toys R us that used to be a toy store. Fisher price designed the interior for toddlers also comes to mind. Still it comes over in the road tests a very good Car.
An interesting presentation. Around 16:40 you mentioned that it’s ‘cruise control’ has ‘speed recognition’. Might work in some places, but if it’s just using road signs it will fail on many roads. I’ve come across all sorts of poorly mounted signs that are detected by a similar ‘road sign assistance’ device in my Toyota Yaris, when it does not apply to the lane you’re in; not nice - but it’s only for the display in my car, so it can just be ignored. I suspect that for things like that to work well, the road speed signage will have to improve, as they’ve created a real interface between the road and the car, as it were. Also, the timing of road alterations and the timing of map updates for sat-navs etc would be a snag for systems like that.
I'm guessing they had to release it now, with the glitches, to save the early adopters cancelling their orders? Especially as there are some very good deals on the future models of the ID3 and the equipment they include as standard, much of which have been left off this 1st Edition! Marcus at EV Journey has a run down of what's available in Germany and the prices which look pretty good as well! Imagine all those 20,000 units' orders being cancelled, because the customers could wait 6 months for a fully loaded car, without the silly decals!
Great video Bob, please stop mentioning the ID Buzz, my money is stacked up in the corner waiting for it! I’m so pleased that the ID.3 is a good car, we need some good cars.
Nice. I want to know about the handling and I loved the first 10 minutes and then i skipped some moments and i don't think that the handling and suspension and wild speed aspect was covered.
I agree with you about fear of EV adoption. People don't like change. I would suggest to anyone who has not driven an EV to go and try at least one, especially if you may be thinking of buying a new combustion car. They do still cost more, but this is offset by very low running costs, almost no maintenance and a lovely driving experience. I have had a BMW i3 for a year now. By choice I will not buy a combustion car ever again.
Took one for a test drive today and it seems a great car to drive. The seat is comfortable, there’s a lovely feel to the steering wheel, and good push from it when you accelerate from 0 which is a bit of fun. But it didn’t FEEL like I was going fast at any point. And likewise, when braking (and the brakes were stellar!) it didn’t feel as much was happening. Now, both points can be taken as a kudos to the car as that may be what a lot of people are after. And I’ll be honest, if using as a standard commuter of short distances it’s perfect (is very comfortable). But things I didn’t like are the range (if using Air Conditioning and at motorway speeds [especially for those of us doing regular drives between the likes of Dublin to Cork, Cork to Mayo etc etc]) and little things like ease of viewing through the rear window which isn’t great due to the height of the backseats (tho is great for those in the back due to added legroom). The biggest gripes on my end are the fact that I would have to turn off the safety features (such as lane assist) every single time I start the car as they continually reactivate, and the issue of warranty itself. If you use too many fast charges within x number of consecutive uses you will immediately void the warranty. Now, while for most this won’t be an issue as you may only ever be commuting from home to work and vice versa, and at most destinations you may very well have AC chargers, but if doing long miles (and miles during which I would appreciate utilising Air Conditioning and the upper speed limit of the motorway) I would have to be conscious not just of the range (which with the mid pack battery may see me needing to charge once in every long trip between cities etc) but also of how many AC charges I’ve performed recently relative to DC, because let’s be honest here... if you are travelling a lot you WILL want to just use the fast chargers wherever you can.
Why is the instrument panel so small. At least the model 3 has an offset A4 sized screen. Even the offset VW screen is small. More appropriate for an EV polo
Thanks for the review Bob. On the exterior, a really lovely looking car but completely let down by a horrible cheap looking interior. For a €40k+ car that’s a big disappointment.
Very interesting review. Enjoyed that. Pertinent and to the point as ever, no fluff, just hard data about the product. High praise indeed for the incomplete ID.3. The key point you made was it was a good car to 'drive'. BTW is ID Crozz and ID.4 not the same car? The Buzz will be right up your street. No wonder Elon Musk took a test drive in ID.3. Bob VW Adaptive cruise control is good, but have they combined that with a half decent lane keeping assistant in ID.3? PS: I might better the Golf in size and space, but it seems to lack Golf quality, especially inside.
I’ve only driven manual transmission cars for 35 yrs and I figure if they are taking my manual transmission away I might as well go electric. I drove the Model 3 but I couldn’t believe how poorly built the car was. I figure the 2 cars short listed on my buy list are the Mach E and the ID4. Thanks for the honest review Bob! I always enjoy the Sunday service too.
How is this better or cheaper than an e-Niro that's out since last year? In any case, I do agree that it's very good that VW got serious about making electric cars.
I was expecting more from an EV that's brand new and build from the ground up. Like Johny Smith said, the ID3 is a bit of a disappointment when you compare it to other cars in this class
I am really hoping that VW will decide to sell the ID.3 here in the U.S.! Question for you Bob: at 19:15 the video shows the switches between the main instrument panel and the larger center screen. Earlier, you showed the headlight modes - what are the buttons labeled FRONT and REAR either side of the MODE button? The lower REAR is the rear defroster; and the MAX would probably be the front defroster set to maximum.
Uh.. bob. It's actually shorter than a golf (by 23mm). It's rear motor / RWD. The "high power" rapid charger in Portlaoise is software limited to 44kW at the moment. There is wireless charging in that spot on some trims. ID4 and ID Crozz are the same thing.
I can always agree with a man who judges the quality of a car on the THUD that a door makes. I've always used the same principle when choosing a new car
Good review, thanks. It enrages me somewhat that VW has no plans to sell the id3 here in the US. The standard line is, "Well, Murrkins only like SUV's and crossovers so blah blah blah..." so we have to wait for the id4. But I don't WANT an id4. (Has anyone noticed that the Model 3 is neither an SUV not a crossover? Apparently not.)
Enjoyed the review Bob as always. . Town house parking in Ireland makes EV hard choice. Seen two EVs in my estate in last 18 months traded in for petrol/diesel. See another running cable cover over footpath to his EV but he can't leave it in over night for health and safety etc...
I think it’s a decent car for 34k. I think it’s questionable at 41k and I think it’s daylight robbery for 48k with no battery/motor difference! Great seeing VAG doing electric. I think the Enyaq or 7 seater electric Skodiaq will shift big numbers here.
Here in Au all the Big Oils are building many big new petrol stations, and more in the middle of nowhere. None of which have rapid chargers. I can't help but wonder why when the gas pump is apparently going the way of the dinosaur. Makes me think that everyone driving an electric car is still a very long way off... 🤔
Why do you say the VW active cruise control is better than anyone elses ? I have tried several manufacturers systems and they all do what they should, so why is VWs best ? And another thing - how come the latest batch of EVs can't beat the Hyundai Kona/Kia Niro EV stats (now several years old), even with the "latest" battery tech ?
As a Tesla owner, I really wanted this to be a good car that would bring EV to more people - and it looks to be a good car when they fix the start up issues. But, it is 8-10K too expensive - and certainly in the UK the 2 models that they are bringing to the country are priced the same as the Tesla SR+ and LR. As you state, the Tesla is a different car - for a different market, this was meant to be a "peoples car" (VW group comment). But the pricing is wrong for the status and market. Such a shame.
The new charger in Portlaoise Plaza is free to charge at the moment as it’s reduced power. Should be 150kw but only going 50. Best of luck with ID.3, great car.
Went to look at this yesterday and was surprised how terrible it was, went to see about tesla afterwards and i ended up buying a model 3. The quality difference between the 2 is night and day.
Great video Bob; I’m pretty sure though the all the ID platforms will be rear motor, rear wheel drive, so I don’t think it has a front mounted motor :)
Great review thanks, no scratching of plastic & the odd little mistake to keep us on our toes! This car won't suit everyone, but l think is will suit a lot of people who are moving from an ICE vehicle who want a well built practical car they can live with easily. Interestingly l had a chat with a M3 performance owner at a charger last week, he openly admitted the build quality was terrible & it had spent a lot of time at the service center, but he loved the technology so could forgive the car, & yes he worked in IT!
Another really good video Bob, thanks for posting. The ID.3 looks and sounds (i.e. it's really very quiet) like it's set to become a great success. I guess it will be a few years before we'll be able to really measure the success of this car but on first looks it's pretty darned good.
I pre-ordered this as soon as I could. Went to Frankfurt 2019 to see it premier at the motor show ...and then fell out of love. Plasticky and cheap feel inside and out when compared with comparable VW / Audi ICE Cars. How can this be the case for such an expensive vehicle? VW forget how to make high quality fit and finish along the way to electrification?! And price is another stand out issue. Its just far too expensive for the affordable electric car that VW were supposed to be championing. Overall I felt if VW had set out deliberately to stamp out it's nascent development of EV production - in order to keep petrol/diesel industry alive - then this is way you might go about it.
Nice review, thanks. A question to you Irish: so you ditched the British, even switched to metric (yay!), but you still drive on the wrong side of the road - wtf is that? 😉
Is the bigger boot not er due to it being a bigger car. If you want a bigger boot then ergo buy a bigger car but you have to then accomidate a bigger car
Uh,... That's not the motor, Bob, it's the air con unit. Motor is on the rear axle.

Great video Bob, please stop mentioning the ID Buzz, my money is stacked up in the corner waiting for it! I’m so pleased that the ID.3 is a good car, we need some good cars.
Been waiting for this review for ages. Thanks Bob
Nice. I want to know about the handling and I loved the first 10 minutes and then i skipped some moments and i don't think that the handling and suspension and wild speed aspect was covered.
great review Bob!
Thank you!
I Dunno if I'd buy a 1st edition one as the next one will have bugs and things polished out and Maybe more tech or something like that
I can always agree with a man who judges the quality of a car on the THUD that a door makes. I've always used the same principle when choosing a new car
Great review Bob, I absolutely love the car.
Charging port much easier at the front. Those cables at fast chargers are not very long.
I tied one and its the car deal ever. Most battery cars are noisy, but not this one. Its a unbelievel god car.Bought it!,,,,,,
Good review, thanks.
Cool video bob
It looks like what the Golf+ would look like in 2020. Quite underwhelmed by the I.D 3...
Probably the best electric car review I have ever seen. You spoke about what it’s like as a car, not some technological tour de force. Excellent.
Enjoyed the review Bob as always. . Town house parking in Ireland makes EV hard choice. Seen two EVs in my estate in last 18 months traded in for petrol/diesel. See another running cable cover over footpath to his EV but he can't leave it in over night for health and safety etc...
The wireless phone charger is an option, and was only available in the top tier 1st edition.
The inner armrests are key - make big difference on long trips
Why oh why vw can’t you spec the heads up display with the 77kw tour models
I think it’s a decent car for 34k. I think it’s questionable at 41k and I think it’s daylight robbery for 48k with no battery/motor difference! Great seeing VAG doing electric. I think the Enyaq or 7 seater electric Skodiaq will shift big numbers here.
goodfella21f what about them?
What are these rear wheel drive EV’s going to be like in Winter and driving in snow? 🤔
Great i suspect? Modern assistance systems should compensate just fine for a heavy right foot, no?
Pretty poor that VW couldn't complete the software development before launch. I wouldn't be comfortable trusting them to deliver the upgrade on time.
Hi Bob. Would you say there is less tyre roar than a golf.?
Here in Au all the Big Oils are building many big new petrol stations, and more in the middle of nowhere. None of which have rapid chargers. I can't help but wonder why when the gas pump is apparently going the way of the dinosaur. Makes me think that everyone driving an electric car is still a very long way off... 🤔
Another superb video Bob. Re: ID.3, how is handling, ride quality, noise level, seat position/comfort, etc?
Bob could you do a piece with more details on how you found the handling of the id3 on irish roads? Was it the same as a golf?
By screens, I think you mean capacitive buttons
Fascinating! I absolutely hate those fake hole arrays and that whole motif; useless, fussy, unnecessary.
Overall shape looks nice.
Greetings from Finland!
How and where do you get free charging? Makes it more appealing
Volkswagen give a years free charging when you buy the 1st edition. All other free charging has ended
@@BobFlavinVideo Thanks Bob. Took the plunge and will collect mine on Friday
It is known there will be 4wd versions (maybe not the ID.3).
Abraxas Tulammo - Thanks for that information :)
Great review Bob:):)
Would it fit a cello in its case in the trunk area?
Are VW looking to replace this with the golf when things go electric?
No airvents in the back?
None, two USB ports only. Not really needed but they are nice when they are there
Bob Flavin 😀 My kids disagree, they get carsick without air 🤮
Airvents are in the foot well according to the schematics.
Jörgen Bergström Cheap interior.
A lot of practicality at the back comes with 7k price tag. My base edition won’t have a load through, pockets or usb at the back.
How does this compare to Model 3? What does anyone think?
Hey Bob, do you think its worth waiting a year or so before ordering for any production issues to be ironed out?
Would love to see how it copes in winter conditions
Nice review, thanks. A question to you Irish: so you ditched the British, even switched to metric (yay!), but you still drive on the wrong side of the road - wtf is that? 😉
ID3= This is how VW will go down if they don't step up their game. Underwhelmed ... ICE people trying to make EV cars.
Nice editing!!!!
Is the bigger boot not er due to it being a bigger car. If you want a bigger boot then ergo buy a bigger car but you have to then accomidate a bigger car
Bob was looking forward to what average klm per kw you got after your 2 days or normal 120/100kph driving.
I’m dropping it back tomorrow so I’ll screenshot everything for members and patrons!
Very nice car. But i think they have a lot work to do with the software.. very slow and LOT of bugs
Sorry a 1958 Bel Air Chevy is a big car. A Toyota Land Cruiser is a big car. That’s a small car Bob. Great review. The more EVs the better.
ID.3 1st , ID.3 1st Plus or ID.3 1st Max and does the » Augmented Reality Head-Up Display* work if the Max?
