I fell in love as soon as Lani and Karen hit the stage (puppy love) but whenever I see videos of them in the sixties today, I still fall in love, lol! Music was RIGHTEOUS then. ❤❤
Me comento...
I quit watching TV in 1968 and missed this. I heard their Brazil 66 album because my mother played it on our little phonograph she got with S&H Green Stamps. Their vocals are so great, the instrumentation, all! The ladies are so beautiful and such talent and fine voices. I can somehow sense they were very nice people too, not arrogant because of their fame and talent. They created their own genre with the way they would sing "a capella" too.
The Music Scene dvds, of which this is a clip, are well worth having as a “slice of the 60s.” Lani Hall was/is such a confident performer and with her pipes, she should be!
Yes, Lani's style is so understated, subtle, beautiful, and classy. She comes off as getting in the zen of the music and being one with it, and having no sense of ego or self-consciousness. Nothing Lani did was forced or self-conscious.
+Amos Hart I like watching this footage - covering up Karen so that Lani's stage prescence can be appreciated by itself. She is like water (Mother goddess of the sea -- Ye Me Le) -- sways so beautifully and gracefully. She sings in Beauty.
I've got the Sergio Mendesmania too, I especially appreciate the first three albums, with Janis Hansen as vocalist
I am very proud to be Brazilian. I love our people, music, beachs, capoeira, we have beatiful places, womans, foods, Rio de Janeiro ( you can imagine this? - thanks god...), and Sérgio Mendes!
I wish I had learned Portuguese in school . Brazil definitely contributed great music, people and women to the world. I have a great respect for your country
Mendes was signed by A&M mostly because Herb Alpert (the "A" from A&M) fell in love at first sight with Lani. But then, who wouldn't ? - a beutiful girl with a voice that takes you to heaven. Btw, they are still married!
Sensacional!!
Thanks, hardbossa. The more I listen to these guys, the more I like them. Loved Sergio's jazzy arrangement on Jimmy Webb's " Witchita Lineman". These two make an outstanding combination.
+Wesley Carusos Which live recordings did you find? I know of a 1970 Osaka Japan World Expo live album. I saw a black-and-white film for INA French TV doing "Upa Neguino" and "Mas Que Nada" + a colour film of a theatre performance of "Mas". I can't find _any_ other live recordings of Brasil '66 anywhere. I can find none with the previous line-up (Joao Palma, Jose Suarez, Bob Mathews, Janis Hansen, let alone w/ Bibi Vogel).
@@intuitivesamba9766 You can watch the previous line-up of the group in a Lloyd Thaxton TV show on Vimeo. The group "pays" 3 titles and there is a live interview of leader Sergio who introduces each memeber of the combo
Lani sways so beautifully and gracefully. She really is like the mother goddess of the sea -- like water. (I like to watch this in a way that ignores or covers up Karen -- sorry Karen. She might be an angel too, in her way.)
Is anyone as beautifully- introverted as Lani? (Go to her website and find a photo of her sitting on a park bench in Japan (in late '60s?) - probably lost in thought, maybe thinking of poetry or something.)
Lani Hall - an amazing singer - instantly recognisable. Bell clear diction and so effortlessly tuneful. With no Lani, Sergio Mebdes may have still made it big time but their biggest hits feature Lani’s vocals. She took the group to the stratosphere.
Thank you so much LemonJello for posting this great clip showing the one and only Lani Hall. Even though it's a lip synch it's fantastic just to see her-- wow. One of the greatest singers, with such a beautiful voice, and she looks beauitful too! Love you Lani!
The music, the sets, the clothing - so stylish. Everything's just right. Now if they could've just included an extended drum solo in the middle of "Ye Me La", and then smashed their instruments before leaving the stage....
@caravaggio31 The brunette singer on this video, is Lani Hall for sure. The original line-up of Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 included Lani Hall and Janis Hansen as the female vocalists. Wanda de Sá and Rosinha de Valença belonged to the previous Sergio's group Brasil '65.
@caravaggio31 You are right. The blonde in this video isn't Janis Hansen, but Karen Philipp who replaced Hansen on beginning 1968. After leaving SM&B66 group, Janis Hansen together with the percussionist Jose Soares formed another group called "The Carnival", who recorded only one album.

14 years on and this post still has the best quality resolution video of this performance unless I missed one out there. Too bad most of these videos seem to be so deteriorated; I hope there are people out there who have the ability and the will to restore these videos. Btw a very young David Steinberg doing the intro!
So sad! Mr Sergio Mendes passed away today, september 6th, 2024. May he rest in peace. I will keep on listening to his wonderful music.

A song firmly rooted in the music of Salvador, Bahia.
The proudly most African part of Brazil

I'm not Brazilian, but I love the music and sound of this music.
Here is a group of classy musicians! Lovely to hear
It reminds me a lot my kidtime in the 1960s , I used to enjoy very much Sergio Mende´s style (and still like and hear his old albums).
The most versatile group in the entire world.....i get goose bumps every time i hear them. Thank you for this video!
Sergio Mendes Brasil 66 from 1969 mesmerizing performance throwback to another place in time when music actually meant something
Realmente bella esta música!!! Gracias Sergio Méndez
I loved this song!! Masterful!!♥️🎶 I was a huge Sergio Mendes fan and Brazil 66. I listened to their albums religiously!!🥰
We must pay a tribute to Sergio Mendes for their terrific job as a Brazilian ambassador or our music in USA
Love Sergio Mendes music greetings from Spain as so much
not just in US.. Al over the world..
Incredible sound. Brasil66 with gorgeous Lani.
I’ve loved these for years - Ye-Me-Le is so good 😊
Two sweet girls with wonderflul voice makes me fly way to the sky.

ugh. in love with all that this is!
Karen really was totally gorgeous
Lani Hall as a vocalist added so much to their style!
Lanni Hall had the voice and Karen definitely had the 'moves' back then...
Recently developed an obsession with Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66. Loving Lani Hall's minimalist moves in this video.

Karen Phillips; what a cosmic beauty of woman... I love how she feels the music, her very expressive performance and her magical voice.

I agree ❤
One of the first uploads I watched on TH-cam. It's still here! And it's still groovy! ✌🏾
Stunning combination of Lani and Karen's voices in this one. My goodness they were talented. One of the greatest popular music groups of that period.

Yes, I totally agree. But listen to other duos with Lani and see the difference when she is paired with this blond singer in this video
The best music seems to be written during times of strongest emotions.
