I recommend getting a CCW permit. I have seen more than once a person who was waiting for their background (NICS) check to complete. I walked over, found what I wanted, did the 4473, paid, and left. Those other people were still just waiting for the check and I was already out the door.

With a ccw you're telling the state you're someone who carries guns.. cops see it when they pull you up.. plus I'm not getting fingerprinted like a criminal for the fbi to permanently store another damn thing about us in their system. I live in Kentucky. Here, if you have a CCDW permit, you do have to fill out the 4473, but they don't have to run your background. Having a permit, you've already been cleared to purchase and carry firearms. So you just fill out the form and buy your gun!
You don't need to take a safety course in order to buy a motor vehicle. Here in Tennessee,you walk in the gun store,pick out the gun that you intend to buy,pay the money & wait for the background check. If you pass,you walk out with your new gun. If the transfer is denied,you fax an appeal to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation & they rerun the check & either approve the sale or tell you what you need to prove a felony arrest did not result in a felony conviction.
Unless in NJ where EVERY gun gets registration forms linked to it and can’t buy ANY gun without a purchaser ID card and the background check doesn’t take a few minutes it takes 3-4 days and if you do come back “clear to purchase” you THEN go to pick up the gun & if you decide to buy another one while you are there picking yours up you need to go through the whole process again and wait 3-4 days to pick up the other one even though you are walking out with a gun that day anyways and if you want multiple handguns you need a separate license to purchase handgun’s and can only purchase one handgun every 30 days each handgun purchased under its own license unless you get a collectors FFL which is a WHOLE other process and fees.
It's the same in Croatia. Only our background check is done in local police station. And then you go to a gun store with already done paperwork. The whole process takes about 14 days. The only difference is that you have to take a psychological exam when you buy your first gun and that psych evaluation is valid permanently .

I have 15 firearms and have never had to take a background check for any of my guns. Either bought them at auction had them handed down or bought from individuals.
In Massachusetts you have to take a Gun safety course and a live shooting range course. Then submit an application in your nearest police station and then if everything comes back well they will give you your gun license

In Alaska they apparently don’t do registrations on firearms. Two different shops on four different occasions, one buying a gun and one to reregister one, told me nah your good to go just after this background check. I suppose the only real Alaska gun law is no automatics.
Except for hear in Kentucky If you have a concealed carry permit which is not really necessary but if you happen to have one you can bypass the background check.
When i do my 4473 mine always says pending and usually goes through after a day or 2 but in Illinois where i live regardless of the background check we have to wait 72 hours from the time of purchase before we can pick up any gun. Pending just means there may be someone with the same name ss you who cant own guns so they have to have a physical person check the background to make sure you are you

Here in Georgia when you buy a gun they call the atf hotline and do a fast background check and it usually takes less than an hour and you don’t need a license or anything!

Its the same for any type of firearm that you can legaly purchase from a gun store the only times it'll differ is if you're buying a SBR (short barrel rifle) or a firearm with a freedom switch (full auto). Also some states have a "cool off period" where you have to wait 3-14 days before you can pick up you're newly purchased firearm. I live in North Carolina and we don't have a wait period, so i can walk out with my firearm the same day that i purchase it. Hope this helped answer your questions. 👍

We can no longer buy pistols, which used to be a waiting period while the application went through the approval process, so there are only certain semi auto rifles that require that. Very interesting
There are a few types that have a different process, such as machine guns, short barreled rifles and shotguns, silencers, 'destructive devices' (explosives and non-sporting arms over .50" bore), and a catch-all category for some weird stuff like pen guns and the like. in California you have to show proof of residence, usually your drivers license and car registration. my car registration had my name misspelled so they would not accept it. so I had to bring in a utility bill showing my address. we have a 10 day "cooling off period" so you can't get your gun for 10 days, even if you already have 5 guns at home. you have to take a gun safety test that is good for 5 years. we can only get 10 round magazines, and we have a "gun roster" here where we can't buy new versions of many guns. meanwhile possession of a stolen gun is a misdemeanor, and felon in possession gets you a fine. keeping us safe from harm,, got to love California
In Canada you must take a gun safety course for rifles, and once you pass that you need to fill out paperwork and have references, then the rcmp will check you’re name every day to make sure you’re not a threat. Up until recently. If you wanted to buy handguns there’s another course and test, paperwork and you have to contact the rcmp to tell them you’re going to the range with the handgun etc. much more strict. For some reason. Trudeau wants to fight legal gun owners rather than the criminals with illegal firearms.
Its almost impossible to buy a gun at Walmart. Only 1 or 2 of the employees meet the criteria to work the gun counter and they are virtually never there. I have not seen the gun counter open at any of the 4 Walmarts I regularly visit in over a year.

It depends on who you are, what your name is, your age, and what state you live in... For me personally in my state the background check takes like 15 minutes and I walk out with my firearm the same day

When I got my permit in NJ a few years ago, it took 5-6 months to get a permit after getting finger printed and a background check with the fbi. After getting the permit every time you want to buy a new handgun you have to get another permit with a 4-5 month waiting period all over again.
That's literally unconstitutional lol. Wow. Here in Kentucky, where they still respect our rights, you just go to the store, fill out the form, and buy the gun if you pass. I actually have a CCDW permit, so I don't even have to wait for a background check to buy the gun. And you take it home right after purchase. My permit is good for 5 years. You have to renew every 5 years, but it's only $50, so not too bad. It's worth it to have the permit because it allows me to legally conceal carry in MOST states.

In Maryland you can buy most if not any rifle or shotgun with just a valid id. No wait, no background checks to my knowledge. Handguns are trickier tho
That’s not how you buy a gun in California. You’ll need a handgun safety certificate card and a 10 day wait period. Plus, your handgun has to be on the ever dwindling “CA roster of approved handguns” otherwise, you can’t buy it. Plus, magazine capacity must be less than 10 rounds. There’s also a 30 day wait period between handgun purchases after the initial 10, plus pick up, is complete.

Then do a state and federal background check, pay to have your fingerprints done at the local sheriff office $15, wait 8 to 15 months for the background check to pass and for a judge to sign off saying you can have it. That is only if before you apply for the permit you take 16 hours of firearms saftey classes pass a written test with an 80% or higher, then 2 hours of active shooting range time to make sure you know how to handle and shoot a firearm. Which you have to pay for as well. So there is another $250. Then, once you get the permit, you have to pay for your handgun take the recipet from the gun shop with a form they fill out to the county clerks office and pay $5 to add the gun to your permit which takes 5 days for the new card to be made. Then, take the new permit card back to the gunshop, where they then do the 4473 background check. Only then can you take control of your gun.
Then you need to buy ammo. So you pay for the ammo do a New York State background check to make sure you can buy the ammo, and that background check is every time you buy ammo.
So all and all, it takes anywhere from 6 to 15 months and will cost you $400 just to get the permit. Then you have to buy the gun, and ammo as well.
Just so you can exercise a right, not a privilege.
I live in Kentucky. Here, if you have a CCDW permit, you do have to fill out the 4473, but they don't have to run your background. Having a permit, you've already been cleared to purchase and carry firearms. So you just fill out the form and buy your gun!

You don't need to take a safety course in order to buy a motor vehicle.
Here in Tennessee,you walk in the gun store,pick out the gun that you intend to buy,pay the money & wait for the background check.
If you pass,you walk out with your new gun.
If the transfer is denied,you fax an appeal to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation & they rerun the check & either approve the sale or tell you what you need to prove a felony arrest did not result in a felony conviction.
Unless in NJ where EVERY gun gets registration forms linked to it and can’t buy ANY gun without a purchaser ID card and the background check doesn’t take a few minutes it takes 3-4 days and if you do come back “clear to purchase” you THEN go to pick up the gun & if you decide to buy another one while you are there picking yours up you need to go through the whole process again and wait 3-4 days to pick up the other one even though you are walking out with a gun that day anyways and if you want multiple handguns you need a separate license to purchase handgun’s and can only purchase one handgun every 30 days each handgun purchased under its own license unless you get a collectors FFL which is a WHOLE other process and fees.

It's the same in Croatia. Only our background check is done in local police station. And then you go to a gun store with already done paperwork. The whole process takes about 14 days. The only difference is that you have to take a psychological exam when you buy your first gun and that psych evaluation is valid permanently .

I have 15 firearms and have never had to take a background check for any of my guns. Either bought them at auction had them handed down or bought from individuals.
In Massachusetts you have to take a Gun safety course and a live shooting range course. Then submit an application in your nearest police station and then if everything comes back well they will give you your gun license

In Alaska they apparently don’t do registrations on firearms. Two different shops on four different occasions, one buying a gun and one to reregister one, told me nah your good to go just after this background check. I suppose the only real Alaska gun law is no automatics.

When i do my 4473 mine always says pending and usually goes through after a day or 2 but in Illinois where i live regardless of the background check we have to wait 72 hours from the time of purchase before we can pick up any gun. Pending just means there may be someone with the same name ss you who cant own guns so they have to have a physical person check the background to make sure you are you

I don't know if I heard you right but it sounded like you said you bought five guns on one 4473? If you do that and they are handguns you are 100% guaranteed to get a visit from the ATF.

Its the same for any type of firearm that you can legaly purchase from a gun store the only times it'll differ is if you're buying a SBR (short barrel rifle) or a firearm with a freedom switch (full auto).
Also some states have a "cool off period" where you have to wait 3-14 days before you can pick up you're newly purchased firearm. I live in North Carolina and we don't have a wait period, so i can walk out with my firearm the same day that i purchase it.

Depends how busy the store is, I guess), but that's from start to finish. We can no longer buy pistols, which used to be a waiting period while the application went through the approval process, so there are only certain semi auto rifles that require that.

Those require a more stringent background check that can take days to months or even over a year depending on the queue to run these through a small amount of people hired to process them, as well as a $200 tax. These are collectively known as NFA firearms

in California you have to show proof of residence, usually your drivers license and car registration. my car registration had my name misspelled so they would not accept it. so I had to bring in a utility bill showing my address. we have a 10 day "cooling off period" so you can't get your gun for 10 days, even if you already have 5 guns at home. you have to take a gun safety test that is good for 5 years. we can only get 10 round magazines, and we have a "gun roster" here where we can't buy new versions of many guns. meanwhile possession of a stolen gun is a misdemeanor, and felon in possession gets you a fine. keeping us safe from harm,, got to love California

In Canada you must take a gun safety course for rifles, and once you pass that you need to fill out paperwork and have references, then the rcmp will check you’re name every day to make sure you’re not a threat. Up until recently. If you wanted to buy handguns there’s another course and test, paperwork and you have to contact the rcmp to tell them you’re going to the range with the handgun etc. much more strict. For some reason. Trudeau wants to fight legal gun owners rather than the criminals with illegal firearms.

Usually pistols cost around 5 thousand reals, shotguns around seven - eight thousand and currently you can't even buy rifles, because to the eyes of the Supreme Federal Court, 5.56 is too strong and dangerous. 🤦♂️ They call it "restricted calibers". Dumbest thing ever. And if you're not in the military or police you can't even carry your pistol! If it goes one inch outside of your property, the Federal Police takes it from you. The only way to leave the house with it (as a civilian) is if you're going to a shooting range/gun club, and it can't be ready to be used in your holster! You have to keep it inside the case, no mag, in the trunk of your car.
Or you can just be a thug, buy some cheap ass revolver with the serial number scratched off in your slum and walk around with it tucked in your shorts. As a Tasmanian I really want a gun for recreational hunting/shooting but a bloke went and shot a few people a few years ago at a little place called port Arthur and so out government done a "buy back" and then dramatically made it harder to buy a rifle or any gun for that fact. When I got my permit in NJ a few years ago, it took 5-6 months to get a permit after getting finger printed and a background check with the fbi. After getting the permit every time you want to buy a new handgun you have to get another permit with a 4-5 month waiting period all over again.
That's literally unconstitutional lol. Wow. Here in Kentucky, where they still respect our rights, you just go to the store, fill out the form, and buy the gun if you pass. I actually have a CCDW permit, so I don't even have to wait for a background check to buy the gun. And you take it home right after purchase. My permit is good for 5 years. You have to renew every 5 years, but it's only $50, so not too bad. It's worth it to have the permit because it allows me to legally conceal carry in MOST states.
