My English teacher showed us this video during a lesson about quotations in writing. She suggested that the students watch such helpful videos and gain more experience from people who have practically done the VCE. I really did gain a strong sense of passion for English since I found your brilliant channel. Thanks so much for such quality and useful videos, and all the hard work!!!?!

Hi, Lisa. Very helpful video, but when citing a novel/book title, one must either underline or use italics, not quotation marks. Quotation marks are for shorter texts such as short stories, poems, songs, or chapter titles within a longer work.

As an English and HIstory teacher, I had to double check MLA 8 but the agreed style for titles of complete liteary works is to italicize the titles. Quotation marks are reserved for portions of a complete work like a poem in an anthology, a song from an album, a chapter in a book, etc. Please make sure to correct this. The rest of your video is great!

My work is for high school Australian students who have to handwrite their essays. It's hard to italicise handwriting, so underline is well accepted by the VCAA standards.

Just updated this video with timestamps :)
1:04 - Never quote for the sake of quoting
2:03 - Quotes should not retell the story
    3:52 - Square brackets
    4:47 - Styling titles
Go have a detailed read of more quoting advice over on my blog: bit.ly/2qVI6zK

Hey! I have a research paper that I'm really excited about. Now, I want to start it with a quote, but I just can't get around it. I think the quote is perfect for it, but how do I continue to write without making it sound awkward? Do you have any tips on how to start a paper with a quote? Thanks!!!

For English you should not add unnecessary quotes, however for Literature it IS important to use at least one quote per two sentences....according to my lit teacher anyway.
    Good video though! :)

only poems, short, stories or titles in anthologies are in quotations, otherwise they are italicized.

You have great potential here, but you're not living up to that potential. You didn't show students how to embed quotes. You could have given them sentence starters to get them going. Many students don't know how to even do that. Also, underlining and quotation marks are not interchangeable with titles of works. It depends entirely on whether it is short or long. The example you gave was book, so it would either need to be italicized or underlined, but not both. I would really like to see you succeed, because I would love to show your videos to my class, but right now I can't show videos that are not helpful and will misinform them.
