The 2013 movie "Captain Phillips" , is based on the 2009 Maersk Alabama hijacking, and tells the story of Captain Richard Phillips, an American merchant mariner who was taken hostage by Somali pirates. It stars Tom Hanks as Phillips.

Phillips was no hero. He was advised to sail his ship seaward of the international picket line and chose to sail between the picket line and the coast to save an hour or two between Djibouti and Mombasa. U.S. Navy risked their lives to rescue this fool. Hats off to them but Phillips CHOSE to knowingly put his crew and his rescuers in danger.

Not sure where this video Title picture came from, but aircraft carriers would not use 'Fire suppressing' devices to ward-off circling boats threatening it. Carriers have a FLEET of support ships specifically designed for keeping any threat well away from them. Pirates are after CARGO vessels, unarmored and usually having very little in the way of 'Firearms/Weaponry' (International Treaties).

In my corner of the world piracy is defined as a criminal act committed using a boat/ship.
    Any crime.
In my corner of the world, it is a crime to operate a watercraft while under the influence of alcohol.
Therefore, when I go to a lake and watch a bunch of drunked-up fishermen, I can only imagine that they could be charged with piracy.

There have been several instances where the Pirates attacked a US Navy ship. Most of these have been at night where the Pirates can not tell anything about the ship except for the size. They once attacked a navy supply ship in the middle of the night and out of the more than 60 pirates only 7 survived to face courts. The US Navy turns the ones they catch over to a couple of countries in the area where they are tried and imprisoned for their crimes. The average pirate captured will spend the next 5 to 10 years in a very unpleasant African prison in very harsh conditions.

You ever heard or read of the Barbary war ? Those wars did not include Morocco though as the Moroccan-American Treaty of Peace and Friendship, also known as the Treaty of Marrakesh, was a bilateral agreement signed in 1786 that established diplomatic and commercial relations between the United States and Morocco. The longest treaty still recognized by America.

Between the South China Sea & Indian Ocean pirates have existed for quite some time, Millie. Some times the Coast Guards of some of the countries are pirates themselves. And they aren't very romantic figures either. There are rarely any witnesses.

One approach to solving piracy is for ships passing pirate areas to carry a special forces unit, Only one ship in 6 or so. The unit could transfer from southbound to northbound ships to stay in the Gulf of Aden area without needing to fly back to its base area. This would make piracy less profitable.

As I understand it, international law prohibits arming of commercial vessels. The idea is to be clear in differentiating between military and commercial, so that an ostensible commercial ship cannot do double duty as military or terrorist or pirate. It probably would be better to have a list of allowed self-defense systems, like the non-lethal systems shown here.

More like their warlord feels like losing them would not matter. Its a numbers game -- %of success X payoff per freighter => cost in small boats and crew. The crew gets a small slice of the loot and the warlord gets a profit. The point of placing armed security forces aboard some freighters is to move the breakeven point to where it is no longer profitable to the warlord.

They made a whole TV series about the Arleigh Burke class destroyer. It's called "The last ship". It's about some event (a war I believe) that rendered all the major military powers useless except for a very few ships that were at sea. The "hero" ship being one of them, hence the title. I only watched the first 2 seasons before losing interest.

Very BAD video (piracy not reaction). First, non- lethal force is what merchant/ commercial ships use NOT US Navy. The video did not make that clear. These merchant ships are limited by international law (weak european resolve mostly), bans by various nations on ships and crews from having weapons while in port, and the insurance companies and owners of the ships to limit liabilty of being sued by the goverments and families of the pirates. The broken global legal system promoting this evil practice. The US Navy egages with overwhelming force once the confirmation of the pirates is made (they don't want to accidentally ventilate curious or friendly fishermen). This video on piracy was very poorly written and left out critical info like a typical bad wikipedia entry. Make note of channel and avoid its future poor content.

The pirates wouldn't think twice about killing the US Navy sailors, or those on a cruise ship! With those weapons, they could, instead, use the money for the African people, for food.
