    I think Sir Don was absolutely stoked to realize that here was someone possibly as brilliant at cricket as he was. What a great gesture by him to be part of this special reflection on Sobers' brilliant innings.

    I admired Garfield Sobers when I was just 14 years old and after 56 years now I cannot forget the innings I saw him play at Eden Gardens Calcutta against India. He scored just 65 runs coming 5 down but I saw the power of his ground strokes the ball flying like a bullet. I was lucky to see him live also bowl medium fast and also come on to bowl spin on the same evening against India. The foot work of Gary is gives him the ability to play any ball and invariably he never lets ago any bowl and had great ability with bat, bowl, medium pace and spin, because there is no such person in world cricket still now. He was an excellent fieldsman with versatile display not only as a player but also never lost his cool. One of the greatest all rounder cricket has ever produced.

    Bradman was quite vocal about the inning and allegedly approached the ABC to ensure a special was made to ensure it would not be forgotten. We can now see why. It is also rumored that Sobers exclaimed ‘shot boy!’ (a Caribbean expression of high praise) when he executed the famous savage square cut against Lillee.

    Thank you for sharing. This has to be amongst the most amazing clips on batting and the genius of Sir Garry. It deserves to be much better known for the batting and the commentary. Every Cricket fan needs to watch this for the genius that is Sir Garry. Some of the shots, the driving and cutting of the back foot are simply incredible. His balance and the use of repeated slow and slower motion is brilliant! Why don't we see more of that today with all the resources that we have. To top it all, Sir Donald Bradman commenting and the praise and detailed commentary on so many shots. His ability to describe what he's seeing and what Sobers is doing is incredible. I'm not qualified to comment but what strikes one on so many of the back foot drives is that Sir Garry doesn't use big or violent strides with his feet - his feet are very quiet and it's amazing how quickly he's set himself for the shot. And then that follow through! Simply amazing! Thank you!

      Yes, this is very typical of the great left handed West Indian batters, with their weight on the back foot when they drive with power to a full bowl angling away towards the slips. Lara was the same, they would transfer weight to the back foot, without too much lateral or exaggerated back or forward movement. I suppose it leaves lots of room for the bat to come through, in order to get power into the shot.

    On a side note, when the Rest of the World team landed in Australia, there was a local contingent at the airport to meet them. Tong Grieg handed over his kit bag to a shortish man and the person duly obliged and carried it - suddenly some of them reacted in horror and rushed to take it away from this person - he was Don Bradman!

    This is very interesting commentary.
    I saw Sobers play at Lords in 1963, and although I vaguely remember some shots to the boundary, he did not make a large score. I also recall that it was very close at the end - I just checked, and I see that England needed 5 runs to win with one wicket remaining.

      Sir Gary is the greatest batsman and greatest cricketer of all times. Faced all type of attack and from most of the countries. Bradman has mostly played against England. Although Bradman's average and records are unmatched, Sir Gary never played for records.(26 test hundreds he could have easily broken Bradman's record.
      He could bowl fast, medium and spin. An outstanding fielder as well.
      There is no one like Sir Gary Richards and perhaps never can be!!!!

Sachin has 50 + Average vs Australia but still he was not a Match Winner and never has played an innings like Sobers , Viv and Gavaskar . So what you do with your 50 + Average if it's not as influential as these players .
      Sobers failed in New Zealand and Pakistan but He was Dominated , imactful , Match Winner and Entertainer Batsman who Despite of carried the Burden of An All Rounder and Captaincy but still Helped his team out of mud On Many Ocations .

      @@Billie0708 LOL, are you crazy? Tendulkar has 3 MoMs in Australia - one in 1999 (116), one in 2003 (241 and 60*) and one in 2007 (153*). He even got a man of the series, in 1999, which was against the strongest Australian bowling ever - consisting of Mcgrath, Warne, Fleming and a rampaging Lee on debut (in spite of getting 3 dreadful umpiring decisions in a span of 6 innings). His 116 in 1999 is the best innings you can ever witness, on an extremely bouncing swinging pitch, wickets kept tumbling at the other end, he was the lone man standing.

    • @Billie0708

    • @cupidvogel
      @cupidvogel 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Billie0708 This is the problem with ignorance. First you stated that "Sachin has 50 + Average vs Australia but still he was not a Match Winner " - you were found to be utterly wrong and embarrassed when I showed that he has won 3 MoMs and one man of the series. Now you have another angle - "Sachin was not a match winner. Dravid was". That is a cosmic joke. After playing 15 years of cricket Dravid had 4 centuries against Australia and South Africa (the best bowling attacks of their times) in ODIs and tests combined . Sachin had 32. Most of them resulted in wins. The 2001 iconic series was won at Chennai where Sachin scored the highest runs - 126, that gave India the vital first innings lead to secure the victory. Sachin pretty much destroyed Warne in 1998 singlehandedly and won the series, winning man of the match and man of the series. In 2007 when India won a series in England after 22 years by winning at Nottingham, Tendulkar was the highest scorer - 91, in a low scoring match. In 2002 when India won the match at Headingley to save the series, Sachin scored the highest runs - 193. In 2009 when India won a test match in New Zealand to win a series after 30 years, Sachin was the highest scorer - 163, winning Man of the Match and man of the Series. When India won the only test in West Indies tour in 2002, Tendulkar was the highest scorer - 117. When India won against Pakistan at Multan to win the series in 2004, Tendulkar was 194*. When India won a historic test at Perth in 2007, Tendulkar scored 71. Not to mention, India reached 1996 WC semifinal virtually on his shoulders alone, the next 5 batsmen had less runs combined than him alone. At the age of 18 in 1990, he scored an unbeaten 119* in the fourth innings to save the match at Manchester and get Man of the Match.
      What else has he got to do?
