    We’ve started feeding our dog one cup a day and I felt so bad like we weren’t feeding him enough. But this makes me feel better 🥲 He’s 82 lbs but he’s maybe 10 pounds overweight nothing too crazy but still needs to lose some.

    I don't use measuring cups. My dog was 36 pds. when I adopted him. He is a havanese. He suppose to be around 18 pds. So my vet. told me to feed him as he was as normal weight. Let me tell you how that worked. On the second day he fainted while eating. Yeah he was starving. It didn't work. We planned out our own diet for him. He is fed twice a day with 2 snacks....and runs around with 3 other dogs. I was so proud of him when he was able to jump on the couch. LOL He is now a suave 19 pds!

      Nice Video clip! Forgive me for butting in, I would love your opinion. Have you ever tried - Ariamon Aquarius Agamid (search on google)? It is an awesome one off guide for learning some healthy recipes for your dog food without the hard work. Ive heard some great things about it and my m8 got amazing results with it.

    Sometimes it's the little scraps that people give them during dinner or other times and they add up. I don't eat in front of my dog. I just can't bear the begging. He's a few pounds overweight and I finally am being strict with him. I make sure my whole family is on the same page about how many treats he gets per day as in biscuits and I drew a firm line about scraps. Making the effort before they develop health issues is well worth it.

    I got tucker when he was 3 years old. 96 lbs and clearly fatter than he should be. His previous family gave him hotdogs with his food every day. I intended to get his weight down, and putting him on a strict hotdog ban would be easy since we dont give our dogs people food at all. Somehow he has gained weight and its got me worried about his health. So now here i am trying to figurebout how to get the weight off without starving him .

    Thank you so much! These ideas are really helping zoey my dog, she is actually running around and sitting on her hind legs. Before she wouldn't run around with my other dogs and she would sit on her butt and not her hind legs but that is all behind us and zoey looks a lot happier now that we are on this diet. While she was over weight I would even take her for walks and usually after the walk she would sleep so well and in the mornings she wouldn't want to go for a walk because I walked her feet off. But now that she is fit, I would take her for shorter walks because of that so thank you so much , I ow you one.

  • @marjoriefleet6917
    @marjoriefleet6917 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Our rescue came to us with a previous broken leg that had never been attended to and re-broke when we only had her for six weeks. We felt so sorry for the abuse she had gone through, that we have spoiled her with treats, and 'last bites' of almost everything we eat. She refuses only dog food, so I mix it with chicken or beef. Next I will try ground turkey, rice and peas with her food. I started taking her on walks, but she eventually refused that also. I think her leg was bothering her and she seems to now have arthritis. (did I mention she also has shrapnel in her rear leg?) Time is running out for us to do good by her, and get her weight down. She is a Shepherd, lab, husky cross and should be around 55 lbs, but is 75 lbs. She is about 7-8 yrs old. My husband also insists on giving her treats in the morning when he takes her for her 'duties' across in the park. Also spoils her with treats at night time before she goes to bed with me, then again when he comes to bed. She is treated to death and I cannot stop him. We are killing her with kindness. So difficult to look into those sad brown eyes. Any thoughts, please?

    • @natm5224
      @natm5224 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      My mom is the same about treats and "but look at her sad, soulful eyes". God, I have no solution for my mom's behaviour and thinking. I have tried everything - showing her articles on dog nutrition, showing her pictures of healthy dogs, showing her pictures of obese dogs, dogs with joints injuries and problems, spine problems, even yelling at her, nothing has worked.
      It pains me because anyone can see that our dog is uncomfortable with her weight. My mom sees it too but she just refuses to change herself. So it's impossible to change our dog's habit of constant begging for food.
      Though when I firmly tell my dog "no!" She listens to me and will go to her bed. But when I leave the room, my mom sneaks one treat to our dog. 🤦‍♀️

And I usually just leave the dog food down all day but he never touches it at all but thanks for telling all of us what to do.

Its being hard for her losing weight, i do not know if changing lower calorie croquettes or vegan croquettes?

    Thanks so much! I have a Chihuahua/mini-pin mix and she is solid but needs to lose a couple of pounds (11-1/2 lbs). I've been giving her 1/4 c. of dog food with cooked frozen peas in it, plus a little tab of olive oil or coconut oil in it. I was also told to give her a pinch of Spiralina in it to keep her healthy. At night I give her the same thing. She usually only takes a couple of bites and walks away. Sometimes by the end of the day she will finish it. She also likes to chew on "Bulley Sticks" which is a steer pizzle. She sits like a "mule" when I try to walk her away from the house and I'm discouraged that she won't walk with me. What can I do? Please help!!

      I like to have distinct "breakfast" and "dinner" hours. So, for our dogs, we have breakfast for about 20 minutes. Any food that is left over 20 minutes after the bowl was put down comes back up until the next feeding. By removing the bowl, you're encouraging your dog to finish his meal at the appropriate time, rather than grazing all day.

    • @vikkovitty
      @vikkovitty 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Blue Haze it does sound like allergies. My dog had the same problems so I put him o a raw diet. I started with a novel protein (rabbit) for 3 months then switched to pork (cuz my vey said it has less additives like chicken and beef). The first couple of weeks I heat up the food lightly in a non stick pan so its not hard on his tummy. Then I would leave it out until it got to room temperature and mix a little hot water from a kettle so its not cold meat. When I started him on the pork, I made sure to drain the large amount of fat cuz the first time I didn't and the poor guy was faring and burping all night with gas and diarrhea.
      I've learned alot and find that alot of skin issues are from food. Also adding olive oil and coconut oil made his coat so beautiful the vet was impressed. I also add a probiotic, Kelp supplement and curcumin to help with allergies everyday.

    can I ask what happens if your dog has been 10kg his whole life and then has been put on predisolone which causes weight gain due to trachea issues I walk him and he gets fed twice a day but has only ever really eaten wet food like home cooked chicken and veg or mince and veg. plus one cup of dry kibble ..... would it cause an issue to just start feeding him dry kibble. he is only a lap dog but he is solid and has been since a puppy I fear that the weight gain will stop him from breathing but nothing seems to work. he gets no more pasta nor fridge clean outs or anything from our plates never has...... he is 13 years old and on top suffers from a skin disprder which no vet can figure out thanks

      Laurie Luck he is now off those tablets and just has the extreme licking of paws issue which no vet has been able to stop and he circles the house and cries if I leave him at home with someone else. He is very attached and another bad behaviour is snapping at kids if he is laying on his bed even though that's territorial issues and a big protector of me

      Mike Bell they do, but they are still healthier than most dog food which has carbs and fillers. Also more vitamins in veggies. (Avoid fruits) but my dog loves carrots. She eats a lot. She runs a lot. She’s 9.5 but people often think she’s 3 or 4 years old. She’s a great mix. But a lot of dog food is junk/processed/chemically treated.

    • @smartdoguniversity
      @smartdoguniversity  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question! You want your pup/dog to eat the same amount of calories regardless of training. You can substitute some treats in place of some of your dog's food. Or, if you have a food hound like my Labradors, they'll eat their food as treats if you're training at home. If you're training in a class, you may need to replace the kibble with a really delicious type of food such as cheese, chicken, etc.
      Just take a look at the ingredient list of the dog food and pick something from that list for their treat. For example, if the dog food has chicken in it, cook some chicken and use that as a treat. Happy training!

      Regardless of where the food is coming from, he should be taking in fewer calories than he's burning. Ideally, the dog is getting a well balanced meal whether it comes out of a bag of commercial dog food or if you're making it yourself. The key is calorie control. We've taken several pounds off our Labrador just by carefully measuring his food in a measuring cup and by not letting the dogs clean up the leftovers in the fridge! They still get their Kongs, however, and can still lose weight so long as I've sufficiently cut their meal back to accommodate the extra Kong calories.

    I would hope that the amount fed to this dog - who does look great - especially for an 11 year old Lab - is of a caliber of high protein, good (medium amounts of) fats, and very low carbs (as well as veggies, good oils, vitamins, minerals and some type of pro/prebiotic?... But, I am no nutritionist for dogs; however, I wonder whether the amount (shown in the video) would give him enough nutrients to be healthy - even though he looks wonderful. Or does it depend on the type of kibble too? I wish there was a video about how to find out what the measurement amounts would be for different breeds, and what dog foods were the best for them. We are looking at Ketona (a new dog kibble that is very low in Carbs.) And I would like to know if the food she is using is Ketona, for her dog, or something similar? There are not many kibbles out there with very low carbs and high proteins and good fats. I do believe everything she and others say about how harmful obesity is for dogs (and humans.)

      The healthy amount of food to feed is the amount the dog needs to stay fit. My dog only ate 1.5 cups per day. And he's a newfoundland mix and 92 lb. I know a German shepherd that eats 4 cups a day and she's healthy. Dogs will not starve or become nutrient deficient on kibble. Kibble is highly dense, highly supplemented. One cup of a quality kibble has around 500 calories. If you are feeding raw or fresh as I do now, then yes if you feed very little then sometimes supplements are needed

    I have always heard tomato is poisonous to dogs. I'd skip giving those and any tomato product like ketchup or spaghetti sauce to them.

    I personally love small dog training treats because you can use them to train and reward with food that’s not their regular food but the focus is the reward of the food not them getting full (full of food they don’t need because they already ate dinner😂)

    • @smartdoguniversity
      @smartdoguniversity  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Abbie Keller Your veterinarian is the best source of information on this. It depends on your dog's current physical health. I have two Labradors, one is 13.5 years and the other is 12. I can walk the oldest dog 3.5 miles each day and she's still very eager to do more. The 12 year old, however, can barely do a mile due to arthritis in his elbow. Each dog is different -- check with your veterinarian, who has the best overall view of your dog's abilities and health and can give you the best answer.

    I adopted a overweight rescue I have her on a diet but she's always trying to steal food from my other dogs. Doesn't want to exercise, unlike my other dogs who love to run, and can be free fed they only eat when they need to. ( very muscled and thin dogs) All the other dogs love to go on walks (we go to the park and walk a mile every weekend that the weather is good). However lil fatty just will not cooperate, hates exercise will eat DIRT bc I won't give her excess food. Vet says there is no current health problems other than being overweight. I love her but goodness she just does not want to do anything but eat!

    Oh no! Tomato’s are toxic! Give your pups raw veggies like in the wild… dogs don’t eat cooked foods in the wild. Watch the carrots in take, carrots have carbs as well as apples. Berries have less carbs of the fruits.

    • @smartdoguniversity
      @smartdoguniversity  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Jennifer, the green part of the tomato plant is toxic, but ripe tomatoes are not! They are actually in some dog foods. They can be included as part of a dog's diet in moderation.

    This video is outdated. Even conventional vets are now understanding that cutting calories also cuts nutrients. High carb, low fat kibble is not a reasonable way to help a dog or cat lose weight. Dogs need more fat. Fat satiates. Restrictions of dry food leave a dog hungry. Just search for sources by typing something like "fat helps dogs lose weight" "kibble is high in carbohydrates" "AAFCO has no listing for a carbohydrate requirement in dogs or cats"

    • @JamesBurdon-gu5yu

      Lie based rant. Vets also advise early neutering despite the severe increase in most cancers, uneeded vaccines, upselling, the kibel you falsely call food which is always garbage compared to raw feeding.

    • @jennifersdramaticpaws
      @jennifersdramaticpaws หลายเดือนก่อน

      @JamesBurdon-gu5yu Did you post this reply on the wrong comment. If you are implying my comment was a lie based rant, maybe re read it. It sounds like we agree on many points (early altering, overvaccinating and raw food is better than kibble) I am just pointing out that if someone is feeding kibble, they should not simply reduce the amount of dry food to cut calories because it is starving the body of required amounts of nutrients. In my opinion forget the kibble and prepare balanced homemade meals with fresh food. Raw or cooked is going to be far superior to processed, carb-heavy, chemical laden kibble.

    When grandma comes over, she feeds our dog all sorts of treats behind our back. I know she loves him very much but the dog has become excessively over weight after spending 2 months at grandma’s while we were overseas.
    I had a talk with grandma but it doesn’t seem helpful and she still feeds him treats and sometimes human food. The only thing I can do is to keep an close eye on them when she comes to my place. 🥲
