Some people took their little dogs with them. I think if the dog was small & easily controlled, it could go in the lifeboat. If he or she would take up space where a human could occupy, or if they were too big to control, then they weren't allowed. The last thing you needed was a large dog jumping around in the boat or otherwise contributing to the chaos. John Jacob Astor's dog was an Airdale, I believe, so she wasn't a lap dog, which is why she stayed on the Titanic with him.

One of the most heartbreaking stories of the disaster is when Alice Cleaver was working as a nurse maid for the Allison family. Supposedly the mother was getting hysterical and Alice panicked because the family wasn't getting ready to leave, so she picked up the baby she was caring for and took him to a lifeboat. The mother, not realising her baby was safe, refused to leave the ship while she searched for him, and perished along with her children. So sad.

    1. The titanic had all the 65 life boats instead of the meagre 20 it carried.
    2. All life boats took the maximum number of passengers which is 65, instead the first life boat carried only 28 Passengers.

    • @adamgrubb5552
      @adamgrubb5552 3 ปีที่แล้ว +19

The intention at the time was that with the sea lanes being crowded and busy as they were, a stricken ship could be intercepted by a rescuer in enough time for the lifeboats of both ships to be used to ferry endangered passengers and crew to the rescue ships. That's why she was said to have more lifeboats than necessary for her day. She simply foundered too quickly and in too isolated a position for that to happen, and it woke up liner owners that changes to distress doctrine were sorely needed.

i've been reading through these comments while the video played about three times (lol), and i've noticed an abnormal amount of comments saying that the captain is at fault for the sinking because he ignored the ice warnings.
he, in fact, did not do this. the titanic had been traveling south west for nearly the entirety of its time crossing the atlantic, but captain smith acknowledged these ice warnings by setting the course of the ship westward, rather than continuing further southwest, where the ice warnings had been reported. by doing so, he set the ship on a straight course for the infamous iceberg that would ultimately cause the catastrophe.
said iceberg had been forming for nearly as long as the time it took to build titanic. the iceberg most likely broke off of a larger originating ice block somewhere around greenland (i believe, don't hold me to that). it would have followed the labrador current for those two years, which would help the iceberg grow larger and larger. the labrador current is extremely cold (obviously lol) and the wind/air added a strong protective layer over the iceberg. due to this, the gulf stream wouldn't've been able to destroy the iceberg in enough time to stop its collision with titanic. (it would've taken, i'm guessing, about ten days to deteriorate it enough for the crash to have not ended so detrimentally)
going back to the two years it took to build titanic, the rivets they used on the section of the bow that the iceberg hit were scientifically proven to be weaker iron as opposed to stronger steel rivets. it was proven that the steel rivets gave under significantly higher pressure than the iron rivets. this, too, most likely played a role in the hundreds of lives that were lost.
accordingly, due to the speed titanic was moving at, and the order than was given to stop as the ship turned quickly to port, this probably led to titanic hitting the iceberg even quicker than it might've if there hadn't been an order to hastily stop as opposed to gradually lowering the speed (again, educated guesswork!) it might've spared more time for more lifeboats to be deployed and more (thought not all) lives saved.
now, the fact that there were not enough lifeboats for everyone aboard titanic was not entirely because it was thought that "too many" would clutter the deck, but because the lifeboats were thought to have to be used to transport passengers from a sinking ship to a "rescue" ship, therefore, lifeboats could hypothetically be used for several trips to and from the sinking ship to save most if not all of the passengers. obviously, this was not the case for titanic, as the closest responding ship was four hours away. (the amount of lifeboats on titanic were 16, 20 if you count collapsible ones, could only accomodate 1178 people at maximum, if every lifeboat had been filled to capacity. with the amount of people who were passengers on titanic, 51 lifeboats filled to max capacity would've been able to save every passenger and crew member.)
as for the argument of "if the californian had responded to the s.o.s. call, there would have been significantly less casualties", there is some truth. many people put blame on the californian for not responding (plus a number of honestly ridiculous conspiracy theories with little - no evidence) to titanic's distress signal, which cause hundreds of lives to be lost. ironically, the californian had stopped for the night, in fear of hitting the very iceberg titanic had collided with. around 22:50, the captain of the californian entered the bridge, and instructed the radio operator to send a message to titanic letting the ship know that the californian was stopped for the night due to ice. when the californian's radio operator ended his shift to go to bed, he forgot to turn on the automatic warning system which would've alerted him of any distress signals the californian might have received. around 5:30am, the radio operator sent out an "all stations answer" call, to which the frankfurt reported that the titanic had sunk. at about 8:30 that morning, the californian arrived at the scene, where they met the carpathia. the captain of the californian offered to take some of the survivors aboard and head for new york immediately, but the carpathia's captain denied the offer and hastily set off for the united states. the californian stayed in the area and searched for any remaining survivors, but did not find any. i believe the californian itself would sink about two and a half years later during the first world war.
while guesswork leads researchers to believe that the californian could've saved many more passengers than the few amount of deployed lifeboats, we will never really know if that could've been an outcome.
i'd also like to add that to everyone who thinks that the titanic is really the olympic, and the olympic is really the titanic, which goes hand in hand with the idea that the titanic was sunk on purpose, the motive for this could've easily been true, but there is proof that the ship at the bottom of the atlantic, is indeed the titanic. it's a believable theory and a mediocre feat to pull the switch off, but the fact that the sister ships may have seemed identical didn't mean they weren't quite easily told apart. not even just structurally, but everything in the olympic had been marked with a number (400), and everything on the titanic had been marked a different number (401). and while, yes, the men in the crows nest had requested binoculars and had been denied, this was simply because the owner of the key to the locker which held the binoculars was not on the ship (that is too sum it up because this is already long enough and i've been typing for far too long, but essentially, the key to the locker was not. on. the. ship. no one said "you don't need binoculars you little shit. we want to ship to sink!" i mean, i hope no one implied that.) adding on to that, something known as the mirage effect, which is pretty much an optical phenomenon that causes light rays to make objects appear displaced, was occurring on a moonless night. without binoculars, and in the pitch black night, it's no wonder that the iceberg wasn't spotted until barely a minute before collision.
therefore, i think it's unfair, for lack of a better word, to try and find some one or thing to solely place the blame of the disaster upon. a detrimental chain of events led to the sinking and the hundreds of deaths. no one person, event, or thing caused this, therefore the blame cannot be placed upon one person, event, or thing. it's been almost 110 years, and people are still trying to find someone at fault.
pulitzer really thought he ate that "no casualties" article up, too 💀

Fun Fact: The large death toll wasnt necessarily the fault of the low number of life boats. The number was still above code. But the real fault lies in the nearby ship, the Californian. They were less than 10 miles away and turned off their radio, which was against the maritime code at the time. Many of the passengers that gave their account of the Titanic sinking said that they saw the Californian. Had the Californian kept their radio on and responded, the life boats on the titanic would have been more than sufficient to transport all the passengers to the Californian.

    • @michael120.
      @michael120. 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Just because the Titanic's life boats were up to code does not mean they were good. The code was that a ship over 10k tons needed to have atleast 16 boats, which the Titanic filled having 16 boats. Titanic, however, was 46k tons. I agree with you over the Californian part however.

The official adverts for the Titanic only claimed it as "virtually" unsinkable, not unsinkable. This was not an unsubstantiated claim as due to the construction of the hull it allowed for the failure of several sealed underwater compartments and still remain afloat. The downfall of the Titanic was the excess speed in which it was travelling in a known iceberg floe and the angle in which it hit the iceberg. Had the Titanic hit the iceberg head on for example it likely would have remained afloat. Ultimately the fault lay with human error, rather than any fault in construction.

Based on new evidence and science, the lookouts on the crows nest were subject to conditions that rendered the horizon difficult to see and distinguish shapes and to create an optical illusion, in fact, an ocean mirage.
The calmness of the water, the clear starry night created a false horizon that would have obscured the iceberg because one wouldn’t have been able to distinguish it against the false horizon.
Binoculars would have been useless, and lights might have helped, but a mirage often distorts things until it’s too late. They should have slowed speed overall, or in fact, kept speed so that they would have enough thrust from the propellers (screws) to work with the rudder to enable them to turn better, rather than trying to slow down.

Fun fact about Astor’s unborn son: he used to attend a South Florida, specifically Miami, restaurant named Gatti’s throughout the 80s before his death in the early 90s. It was my grandparents restaurant, and my grandfather was the only man he would talk to. Most of the waiters, including my father and aunts, were often yelled at by Astor. His “grumpiness” assessed by my grandfather when I started to become fascinated with the story of the Titanic, was due to people chastising him with the name “Titanic Baby” as a child into adulthood.
I’ve always loved the story of the Titanic, so while this technically has to do with it in nickname only (I do feel bad for the man since he never knew his father), I like to think that’s my connection to it in some way.

The Titanic was absolutely not found by accident as this video states, Robert Ballard had two missions he had completed for the navy and had made an agreement that when he was finished he could use the rest of his time searching for the Titanic. He found it by changing the tactics of early search missions, instead of searching for the ship, they searched for the debris field as it would represent a much larger area to get a hit. They found one of the huge boilers with its very distinctive shape and they knew they'd found the ship, it wasn't long after that they found the two sections sitting where they'd landed. But it was not by accident at all, it was by design, that information isn't close to the truth.

If you can afford it. These day's, its much more affordable, but now, ships often don't operate by such a linear class system. You can have different rooms that can be considered different tiers or classes, but you can also have different perks that are independent from the room you have. You could have the top floor family suite on the Royal Caribbean Symphony of the seas (which now holds the world record for largest passenger liner), but only have standard perks, or have an average small room on the lower decks (which, for such a luxurious cruise ship, is still rather impressive), but also have a VIP all inclusive pass. Also, all people, regardless of perks, rooms, sex, or wealth, are given the same priority in the event of a maritime emergency. That concludes today's episode of "Dude who can't aim overthinks an obvious joke."
(Also, you misspelled "always" and "choose.")

@@r6rxylty-194 Actually, I would say just imagine being buried in general. Cremation is a much more cost effective option, and also has much less greedy people. Not to mention, it is better for the environment, and also allows you to keep a much more sentimental connection with passed love ones, since you can just have an urn in the house common room, where it can be admired and honored much more. Also, if you please, you could spread the ashes into the ocean or forest, which would provide nutrients for new life to grow and feed on. Or, if you wan't, you could just send the urn out onto the calm waters resting on wreath for the funeral, like how Pepper sets one out with Tony's first arc reactor in endgame, or you could just let the urn sink, which is another alternative option. Basically, its just allows for a much more versatile funeral, that can be much more cost effective and environmentally healthy, all with the added bonus of not being a field dominated by scammers who artificially inflate the prices with extra unnecessary bonuses that make no sense, all so they can get away with overcharging vulnerable people who are in mourning, which do not have a clear enough state of mind to realize they are being exploited. Cremation and urns are just better options in just about every way possible.

It's been 109 years today (depending on which side of the I.D.L. you're on) since Titanic fatefully struck the iceberg that inevitably and so tragically sent Titanic and 1496 lives (most recent figure) along with her to the bottom of the Atlantic .. But even still, we don't forget them. We will never ever forget them.
In fact, every year I read and learn even more about Titanic and the lives of those who sailed in her - both the victims and those who survived. And their stories never fail to fascinate me.
A few years ago I learned the amazing story of one Arthur John Priest from Southampton, who was one of the 176 stokers on board - otherwise known as Firemen - and of whom only 44 of them actually survived Titanic. Most of them were ordered up on deck soon after the ship struck the iceberg as the boiler rooms quickly became flooded with icy sea - water, and some of these were just as quickly set to manning the lifeboats (according to the British Inquiry testimony of Frederick William Barratt). Arthur John Priest was wet from swimming across a flooded boiler room, and, dressed only in lightweight shorts and a sleeveless cotton shirt, which was the attire suited to the incredibly hot conditions for shoveling coal into blazing furnaces, the immediate drop in temperature once topside was such a shock so he quickly set to rowing his lifeboat (there's conflicting reports as to which lifeboat, but it was either #15 or #17) and he rowed as hard as he could in order to keep warm until he was finally too cold and too exhausted to continue to row. At this point a kind woman in the lifeboat gave him her fur coat to keep him warm, but he still suffered from frostbite.
But I was absolutely astonished to learn that this man, Arthur John Priest, had shortly thereafter also survived the sinking of Titanic's second sister ship HMHS BRITANNIC, which had been commissioned by the British Navy and was converted to a hospital ship in WWI. She'd either struck a German sea-mine in the Mediterranean off the Greek Isle of Kea, or she was torpedoed - costing the lives of 30 men and women when two of her fully loaded lifeboats were sucked into the still-spinning propellers, killing them horribly. Some of the survivor's stories are horrific!
AND Arthur John Priest had ALSO survived the collision with Titanic's first sister ship, HMS Olympic, when it struck the HMS Hawk - PLUS HE SURVIVED 3 OTHER SINKINGS (!!!) including that of the 'HMS Donegal', with ALL of these tragedies resulting in large losses of life!
Priest became known as 'the unsinkable stoker', but many other sailors refused to sail with him, considering his presence on a ship to be "bad luck". He died in Southampton on dry land at the relatively young age of 49 from a particularly bad case of pneumonia, as did many 'black gangers', due to damage caused to the lungs from many years of breathing in coal dust, which was an occupational hazard for stokers and trimmers.
The only other person known to have been aboard at the time of all three Olympic Class Liners when these same tragedies occurred was Stewardess & then Nurse, Violet Jessop, and her own harrowing stories of survival of all three are well worth reading every last word also!
And only one other man, Archie Jewell, was on board three of the same ships as Arthur John Priest was at the same time when they sank, being RMS Titanic, followed by HMHS Britannic, and finally the HMS Donegal when it was torpedoed in the English Channel during WWI - but unlike Priest, unfortunately he did not manage to survive the sinking of the Donegal and is thought to have gone down with the ship.
Every year there are more and more tragic yet fascinating tales that come to light about Titanic and the lives of those who sailed on her - and I will never cease to be drawn in and mesmerised and utterly fascinated by them all!
So yes - on this, the 109th anniversary, we DO remember them. In fact, in hundreds of years to come - they will still be remembered!
Rest in Peace the souls of all of who sailed on - both the victims and those who survived alike - because at the end of the day they were ALL victims of the tragedy in varying ways and degrees. And they are all in God's care now.
