Great video! Looking for my son. Would love to hear more about the National Security program. We have huge challenges ahead in this country especially from China and it would be wonderful to have American students like you learning mandarin and computer science and helping combines like Palantir protect our national security.
OMG, quite sad seeing this kind of post as a Chinese. National security is definitely important for every nation, but why can't we cooperate instead of hating each other? Why can't people learn foreign languages for communication instead of competition? I feel pretty sad seeing this :(

Hi Iris! I loved this video, it was super helpful! Would you be able to talk more about your experience taking online classes at OSU, and specifically your experience taking Intro to International Relations? I am very interesting in pursuing International Relations or Political Science in college, and I'd love to hear your thoughts on the class! Thanks! :)
Hi Alexa! I took intro to IR online when I was studying abroad in Taiwan. The experience of learning about IR while abroad was something special. The class was very heavy on reading, but there were only four essays we had to write throughout the quarter (10 weeks), and those essays were 90% of our grade. It was definitely challenging to be pushed to write at such a high level (usually 7-8 page papers responding to dense readings) while still in high school. However, the professor was super responsive and gave quick feedback to my discussion posts and essays. I found that my writing abilities grew exponentially. I hope this is somewhat insightful, and let me now if you have further questions!
Hey Iris! I loved watching this video and I am excited to enroll in some of the programs you mentioned!! :) The only question I have is would you able to explain how we can show that we did these things on our college applications? Stuff like where do we write them, how do we write them, etc. Thank you!!
Hey, I love this video and it was super helpful!. You mentioned that you got involved in political stuff during the summer. How did you find those opportunities?
My passion is film and writing and I’m not really sure what an internship for film would be like or how to get one. I also plan on majoring in Computer Science and I thought taking an internship that has to do with that sounds pretty cool, but I’m not really sure what would be required of me and I don’t really think I have enough experience to be an intern. I’m honestly just lost with this whole thing.
you def do not need an internship! The whole point of interning is to get real world experience, so if you can create your own film or movie from scratch, that'd be equivaalent or even better than a film internship. Hope that makes sense and good luck!
hey!! I’ve practically binge watched your videos this morning and found all of them so helpful! I was wondering if you had any tips for underclassmen? Also, how did you discover your passion projects and how long did it take for you to develop them?💓💓
Hi Sydney! I will probably make a tips for underclassmen video soon in the form of high school regrets/letter to my freshman self. What aspects are you particularly interested in? (academics, extracurriculars, relationships, etc.?) Any specific questions would be really helpful in making this video! As for passion projects, I started the video pal program sophomore year and my book junior year. They didn't take long at all to start making an impact, about 3-4 months. I would try to see what problems there are in my community and create solutions for them. For example, lack of access to travel-->video pal program; underrepresentation of girls in economics-->econ book with gender neutral graphics. I hope this provided some insight and let me know if you have further questions! Iris
awee you are so sweet and helpful!! I’d definitely love seeing that video! :) I definitely am interested in the academic and extracurricular aspects of high school. My first year went really well; however, I want to push myself outside of my previous comfort zone and develop more passions! I’m planning on going on the medical route, but the extracurriculars are a bit harder to come by for me. Is there a way to have passions that don’t relate to your intended major very much? Also, how can you set yourself apart from other applicants if you don’t have a unique background? Although getting into an elite university is rewarding, I also just want to have a good experience in high school. :) Could you share your experience balancing social life with academic dedication? Thank you for all of your help! You truly are an amazing person!!
@@sydneyanderson2484 This is great, thanks for all these questions! I'll do my best to answer all of them in the video and if I miss anything, feel free to just comment and ask me to elaborate. Thanks again!
I just turned 13 so i'm now eligible for programs like yale young global scholars and im trying to figure out which programs will advance my overall knowledge and help me get accepted into an ivy league. By far your videos are the most helpful out there thank you so so so much!
Hi i'm the same age as you, so do you mind if i ask a few questions? What kind of programs are you talking about being eligible for? I thought you could only take these summer programs to increase your chances of college when you're in college?
@@caughtin4k357 I’m 14 and this person is talking random stuff idk what they saying Yale young global scholars is for 16 year olds and above and the other programs are usually for high school seniors/juniors
@@caughtin4k357 Im not sure about every state university but UGA has summer classes that start at age 11. The ones for older kids show what it would be like to be a student and give you college credits i think, but for the younger ones they're aimed at helping you choose a career field and just educating you about whatever career field your interested in.
Hi Iris! your video was so helpful! I know you talk about starting your own non-profit, but in the future would you consider talking about how to start a company, since I believe the legal work for that would be slightly different?
Hi Tannvi! I'll definitely consider this video idea, but will have to keep a lookout for someone who has started a company and who has experience doing the legal work! I'm considering starting a business this summer, so maybe I'll walk TH-cam through the process :)
Iris, thanks for helping, but I have a question. (Maybe it'll be a stupid one, but I really need to know) So, my parents are hoping that I'll get into the top university / college of my country. It has an acceptance rate of JUST 0.7% and doesn't require ANY extracurriculars. Just clear the entrance exam (which is one of the hardest exams in the World) and you'll get in. But. One tiny part of me wants to get into Harvard badly. Most possibly my parents will help in EVERY way they can if I tell them. But... Even after being educated (my father is a professor) they think studying hard is the only key. Extracurriculars are ONLY for fun. *How do I tell them that I want to get into Harvard, and I need to do some extracurriculars?* I HAVE to tell them because in my country, children are REALLY dependent on their parents. If you read this far, thank you! Please answer if you can ❤
Hi, Iris! Four videos about the college application are not accessible. These are How to Start a Nonprofit Organization, My Accepted Common App Essay ,My Accepted Stanford Supplemental Essays , and My Accepted Cornell “Why School” Essay. Could you help me out? Thanks a lot!
During pandemic I was so devastated and not motivated to do anything at all. I was really like a douchebag. But now I am graduating and must pass national test to get into uni . I regret doing nothing during quarantine when I actually could . I would really like to submit my application this year even though I will be freshman soon so that i can get into another uni . Do you know anybody with this kind of situation? Whatdid they do ? What should I do ? It will be like a gap year in uni i dont want to studt
Hi I'm an upcoming junior and I was wondering how you'd apply to the university of oregon e college program. Would you apply as a freshman? Also thanks for this video!
Do you think it would be a good idea for me to take classes over the summer that way I can take classes I actually care about when school does start? For example, I need to take financial literacy, physical education, and health as a requirement to graduate but I don’t wanna have to take those classes over the school year because I don’t really have much interest in them. Also, do you think having a free period looks bad in college applications? I don’t have one right now but I was just wondering.
Big yes to this! I did this (if you see my stats video I go through all my HS coursework) and I got a lot of prereqs out of the way by taking online classes over the summer or during the school year. Having a free period in itself does not look bad, but taking too few classes/too light of a course load will look bad. For example, I had four free blocks my senior year but I also took three classes online with Oregon State Ecampus. I hope this insight is helpful to you and let me know if you have further questions!
hi! very helpful video! i was wondering if you had any suggestions on getting people invested in an idea without having a network? for example, how would you have connected with people from other countries with out having formed the network you did at the Yale Youth Program?
Yes of course! Social media is a great place to go. Trying searching for high schoolers who are leading organizations (they'll tag it in their bio). Use Linkedin, Instagram, and Twitter!
hi iris! if you don't mind me asking, what program you did you do for your study abroad time in Taiwan? it sounds like a really cool experience! also, i'm taking a summer class online at oregon state u's ecampus currently (rising junior). i'm also considering taking another one in winter quarter of the upcoming year (basically spring semester for high schools). however, i'm also taking 4 aps in core classes, and i don't know if this would be a good choice during the months leading up to ap exams. i was wondering if you had any advice, anything would be appreciated, thanks! :)
I did NSLI-Y! I would say start your AP classes in the fall and see how the workload feels. Then, when winter quarter registration comes, you can decide. I think winter quarter ends in March/April so that'd be before AP season!
Hi Iris! I think you said you had an advisor during your application process. Could you please elaborate as to what the advisor's role in the application was? Ie did they check your essays? Was it a video chat?
Hey! We did a video call pretty much every week and she helped look over almost all of my essays! I was also able to email her throughout the week to ask any questions. Super helpful given that I could barely get an appointment in with my school’s counselor
Hey Iris your videos are extremely helpful. In one of your videos you talked about one of your passion projects in which you developed a platform where you brought together students to reduce cultural bigotry? I was just wondering how you managed to get students to sign up from 6 continents and gather such huge support ( P.S. I am sorry this isn’t related to this video but I can’t seem to remember where I watched it )
Hi Catherine! I made a video about this w/ the rest of my team and it's linked in my extracurriculars playlist! The title is something along the lines of stand out to get in... video pal program
Even though I want to major in biology, can I put on my college application that I do stock trading? It’s very unrelated to medicine & science but I don’t want it to hurt my application since it’s really unrelated.
Hmmm maybe have it as your 10th activity... basically to fill up space if you don’t have enough activities to list 10. Otherwise, I’d leave it out, unless you spend a large chunk of your time trading stocks
Iris Fu alright thanks! also should I put that I solve Rubik’s cubes as an extracurricular if I still have space? I used to do rubiks chbe competitions in middle school but I still solve them in my free time
I’m interested in biology and for passion projects I’m already planning on writing a book like you did. Do you know what other passion projects I can do?
Hi iris!! Hats off to your dedication!! I have a question about your summer probgrams/internships your research internship and program at Yale are pretty far away so I was wondering how you did those programs if you don't live there, does the program pay for your flight??
This video is very helpful as a freshmen in high school! 😍 Can you please do a video mainly on VideoPal program? I really want to know the whole process of doing it because I thought of doing something similar on my own!
ooo juicy question. tbh I'm super curious to see how it'd turn out bc i think the UCs really measure off test scores right now (they're less subjective than ivies and stuff). It's good though because imo the SAT is dumb and as the data shows it's a horrible metric for college success
If it weren't for the fact that my parents are shipping our entire family to Kenya for 4 WEEKS, then I would have immediately accepted my ecology internship. 😂😢
Hiii, I know this is a semi old video but I kinda have a question. So this summer I was considering doing a summer program, but it doesn’t have the title of Yale or Princeton. However, those are my two top schools would I have a higher chance of admissions if I went to one of the summer programs at an ivy school rather than one at a normal college, even if I study the same thing, and the coursework is pretty similar?
hey! i’m no expert but i feel you would have a higher chance if it came from one of those schools. colleges like when people are already with the school community or associated with it 😊
You probably won't see this but. Im in 8th grade and want to do something over this summer, but all of the summer programs have an age req, do you know any summer programs that dont have an age req? I think I'm advanced for my age in areas like Math and Programming (Im in precalc this year, and know python and java). I'm trying to get into a good college and am trying to start now. Which summer programs should I enroll in, and which summer classes should I enroll in to get Highschool credit so I can take even more advanced class in HS. The classes I want to get advanced in that I'm required to take next year are Spanish 2, Stem Physics, Global Studies 9, Lit and Comp 9. I was wondering if there was a way to gain take and gain the credits for these classes over the summer.
Hi, Iris. How are you today? I really want to start a PAL program, because I feel confident enough to help other kids interested in majoring music as I am, but here is my question... I'm homeschooled and I do not have any idea about how and where start it, can you help me, please? I'll appreciate your help A LOT!!!

Stuff like where do we write them, how do we write them, etc. Thank you!!
Hey, I love this video and it was super helpful!. You mentioned that you got involved in political stuff during the summer. How did you find those opportunities?
There is no formula to get into Ivy or Stanford. One of my students did nothing and got into Stanford, MIT, and Brown????
My passion is film and writing and I’m not really sure what an internship for film would be like or how to get one. I also plan on majoring in Computer Science and I thought taking an internship that has to do with that sounds pretty cool, but I’m not really sure what would be required of me and I don’t really think I have enough experience to be an intern. I’m honestly just lost with this whole thing.
you def do not need an internship! The whole point of interning is to get real world experience, so if you can create your own film or movie from scratch, that'd be equivaalent or even better than a film internship. Hope that makes sense and good luck!
hey, I know it’s a few years later, but I am also interested in film and writing. How are you doing now? Do you have any tips?
You skipped grades?
@@JohnSmith-sq5mg No???
Hi your videos are so helpful! Thank you 🫶
Iris, thanks for helping, but I have a question. (Maybe it'll be a stupid one, but I really need to know)
So, my parents are hoping that I'll get into the top university / college of my country. Please answer if you can ❤
thank you for this video!!
Do u have a video about your program? Can u tell more about it?
I made a video on it! Check it out in the extracurriculars playlist
Hi, Iris! Four videos about the college application are not accessible. These are How to Start a Nonprofit Organization, My Accepted Common App Essay ,My Accepted Stanford Supplemental Essays , and My Accepted Cornell “Why School” Essay. Could you help me out? Thanks a lot!
can we get more information on NSLI FOR YOUTH? please
Thanks Iris!
Ofc!!!
thank you, this is so helpful!
thank you for this info
This is so helpful! Thanks!
Hi Fu!!! Can you pls pls let me know about the Summer School in Stanford for Computer Science, Robotics n mechanical engineering.
Hey, can you make a video with your friend on how to create a blog? I really want to start one, but I'm not sure how to get it to grow...Thanks
Anybody explain to me what does "programs" mean???
All your videos are wonderful Iris. But, Is all these possibilities are same for international applicants too
Hi I'm an upcoming junior and I was wondering how you'd apply to the university of oregon e college program. Would you apply as a freshman? Also thanks for this video!
This summer i will be writing researches and a book
And personal statement of course 😂
Hey, I love witing poetry but I don't know where I can publish my poems, someone knows?
How did you take eCampus courses while abroad with the time differences and the activities on the study abroad. Are the classes independent study?
Yes, everything is asynchronous, so work at your own time and meet the deadlines!
Hi Iris, this video is really helpful. Can u please tell me where to start an online community. Please
I used to code RTS game and It's going well but it's gets harder when coding units
hi! very helpful video! i was wondering if you had any suggestions on getting people invested in an idea without having a network? for example, how would you have connected with people from other countries with out having formed the network you did at the Yale Youth Program?
Yes of course! Social media is a great place to go. Trying searching for high schoolers who are leading organizations (they'll tag it in their bio). Use Linkedin, Instagram, and Twitter!
Iris Fu thank you for the advice, great ideas! :)
hi iris! if you don't mind me asking, what program you did you do for your study abroad time in Taiwan? it sounds like a really cool experience!
also, i'm taking a summer class online at oregon state u's ecampus currently (rising junior). i'm also considering taking another one in winter quarter of the upcoming year (basically spring semester for high schools). however, i'm also taking 4 aps in core classes, and i don't know if this would be a good choice during the months leading up to ap exams. i was wondering if you had any advice, anything would be appreciated, thanks! :)
I did NSLI-Y! I would say start your AP classes in the fall and see how the workload feels. Then, when winter quarter registration comes, you can decide. I think winter quarter ends in March/April so that'd be before AP season!
Please help me to know that ivy League is sporting program or an academic programs also.
Iris Fu Awesome! And may I ask when you started these weekly sessions?
Tanay Tandon end of junior year :)
@@irisfu6929 How did you find her? Would you recommend her, and if so what's her contact info? Thanks!
Can a passion projects be a travel blog? Because I have one travel blog but I do not know if that counts for anything.
I know this is a weird question, but if you hadn't gotten into Stanford, would you have picked Berkeley or Cornell? Also great video :D
ahh that's such a hard question. I probably would have picked Cornell.
cornell be pagal nahi hai ki berkeley legi
You can start a blog, create a tutoring program for biology, conduct biology experiments at home and share them through some fashion, etc!
Do you think writing lessons and posting them onto this blog would be a great idea?
Hi iris!! Hats off to your dedication!! I have a question about your summer probgrams/internships your research internship and program at Yale are pretty far away so I was wondering how you did those programs if you don't live there, does the program pay for your flight??
Amazing information
If I were to do a blog on computer science, does it need to be successful for it to count as an impressive/worthy passion project?
You talk about summer programs in cornell, stanfod etc. These are expensive programs, nit everybody can afford to do these.
What about online courses like edX, Coursera, etc?
What age should you start to branch out and start internships?
This video is very helpful as a freshmen in high school! 😍 Can you please do a video mainly on VideoPal program? I really want to know the whole process of doing it because I thought of doing something similar on my own!
Great suggestion! Starting to plan the video now :)
do you think an internship is EXTREMELY important/ required to make it into an ivy league or ivy league type school such as Stanford?
i must do something college acceptance corey?
How do u feel about the news that California university systems will phase out the SAT?
ooo juicy question. tbh I'm super curious to see how it'd turn out bc i think the UCs really measure off test scores right now (they're less subjective than ivies and stuff). It's good though because imo the SAT is dumb and as the data shows it's a horrible metric for college success
If it weren't for the fact that my parents are shipping our entire family to Kenya for 4 WEEKS, then I would have immediately accepted my ecology internship. 😂😢
What year of high school did you start your Video Pal program?
Soph/junior year ish!
Iris Fu Thanks!
Hiii, I know this is a semi old video but I kinda have a question. So this summer I was considering doing a summer program, but it doesn’t have the title of Yale or Princeton. However, those are my two top schools would I have a higher chance of admissions if I went to one of the summer programs at an ivy school rather than one at a normal college, even if I study the same thing, and the coursework is pretty similar?
hey! i’m no expert but i feel you would have a higher chance if it came from one of those schools. colleges like when people are already with the school community or associated with it 😊
Can online college-level courses count the same as taking those classes physically? Especially during a pandemic?!
I want to start a club but I don't have any idea how can I do that
I tried to join a Stanford summer program but it doesn't have any specific way you can sign up for it? I can only see the syllabus.
Hi, Iris. How are you today?
I really want to start a PAL program, because I feel confident enough to help other kids interested in majoring music as I am, but here is my question...
I'm homeschooled and I do not have any idea about how and where start it, can you help me, please?
I'll appreciate your help A LOT!!!
Hi Iris, for the Oregon State University Ecampus , Did you take Undergraduate or Graduate degrees courses? Please Let me know!
Undergrad!
