MTV was taking over. People stopped listening to radio and waited for new songs to come out on video. They switched from radio to television for their music.

The first video of yours that I watched was when you introduced a young man to Bohemian Rhapsody for the first time. I am 79 years old and when I was a teenaged girl all we had was radio. We got our first tv when I was 10, and by then I had a radio in my bedroom, where I spent most of my time. Radio was often just AM not FM, So sometimes the reception wasn't good, and you had to wait for your favorite songs to come on. This was my entertainment. Growing up in the 50"s we had all the wpnderful Motown groups:the Platters, the Supremes, Smoky Robinson, and so many more. And we had Fats Domino, Chuck Berry, the Coasters and too many awesome r & b rockers to name, and the beginning of rock and roll. And then along came Elvis, Pat Boone And all the smooth mellow tunes of Johnny Mathis, Nat King Cole, and others. This is too long, sorry. Music was very important, the backdrop of our lives, and to this day certain songs evoke specific memories of those times. I love your videos, and all the memories you have awakened in me. I grew up in such a time of great change. the 50's, 60's and all the turbulence of that decade. And each one had its own music. I went to a lot of concerts in the 70's. And I am a massive Queen fan. I could talk about them all night long. You probably know that Roger Taylor wrote Radio Gaga. He got the idea when his toddler son was carrying a toy radio around And saying "radio, gaga". All 4 of these guys wrote songs and were extremely talented. They still perform but have never been the same for me without Freddie. He was irreplaceable. I thank you so much for what you do, and I hope that you are settling in to your new home in N C ! Music brings together people of all ages, races, and backgrounds. I think that music should make us happy, make us think, be fun, uplifting, and comforting. Have something to say, You are a very nice young man, and I am glad that I found you!

The inspiration for this song (per Roger, who wrote it) was one of his very young sons who was listening to the radio and said ‘radio.. ca-ca’. Roger said that little phrase stuck with him.. leading him to write this. It’s not one of my favorites.. but, it definitely tells a story, and it’s another great audience participation song!! Thanks for another great reaction; for a (relative) youngster.. you are very knowledgeable and articulate! (BTW.. I’m probably old enough to be your Gma…), but I’ve enjoyed joining you on your Queen journey! PS .. you should listen to Freddie’s song about their management early on - a song called Death on Two Legs! (Try to find a live version of it) - you’ll enjoy it!

The Videoclip contains scenes from the movie Metropolis produced in 1927 , one of the first Science Fiction movies in history of mankind. It was also the most expensiv production in its time. I recommend highly watching it. The Female-machine you see inspired C3PO in Star Wars. Movie contains love story, critics about social injustice, exploitation of workers by small ruling elite, uses mythological, biblical metaphors as well. Its a back-white silent movie.

Thanks TooBlunt for another great reaction; I like to think this song is a tribute to the radio industry as Queen would probably just have been another starving-artist band had Kenny Everett not immortalized Bo-Rhap on the radio for them. The radio was the quint-essential social media as twitter and the internet are today... As Freddie said, when we get tired of the visuals (MTV), we can always go back to radio... Blessings to you.

When Queen were young, there was a lot more than music on the radio. People depended on radio for their news, for plays and comedy etc. we still have that here in the UK with BBC Radio 4 (and 3 and 4 Extra). Then commercial radio came in and it was all music, which was great for young people, but it diluted the original power of radio. Then, of course, TV became ubiquitous and people did not listen to the radio in the same way.
Also, I was utterly spoiled as a child having people like Queen and The Jam (please listen to The Jam!) & David Bowie to listen to. Not to mention Led Zeppelin etc.

This song for me has always been the struggle between the dilution of music via TV and music videos. The fear that the visual is more important than the actual music and the quality of music will decline because people are focused on the wrong thing, and the music becomes an afterthought to the visual images accompanying it.

LIke I saw from other commenters, MTV started their operation with Video Killed the Radio Star, by The Buggles. Actually, some radio stars that hadn't produced in a while came back, such as ZZ Top, Dire Straits and Yes to name a few. I believe this was Roger Taylor's answer to that, because over time, there have only been 3 cable channels that played videos, but in any city area, there a lot of radio stations to choose from and people who commute to and from work, are going to listen to radio in the car. They are more likely to play a radio quietly in the office, they are more likely to hear new music there first. I do like how you put a lot of thought into your reaction, and a lot of it made sense. I was a teenager when cable became a major media player.

The more I hear this song and the lyrics the more I love it. I grew up in the late 70's and through the great 80's. We loved MTV and waiting for the number one video. We loved different sounds in music that were around and I appreciate them more now than I did at the time.
We didn't have internet and Twitter and snap chat. The bands got their names out there by playing anywhere they could getting their song on the radio top 40.
I do miss how music was made back in the day. The record labels are going to crush the music industry if they don't allow these groups more freedom with their talents.

The making of Radio Gaga is one of my favorites because it shows the playfulness of Freddie and Roger. They went from selling used clothing in Kensington Market in the late 60's to the top of the rock world, laughing all the way. I included a link to the video. Enjoy!

I am fortunate and appreciative of growing up in the 80's with the radio and all the awesome it had to offer. This is where I heard all new music from established artist's and up and coming. By the 90's at work I needed no watch to tell time as the radio would tell me exactly what the time was by the song they where playing, day after day for weeks, nothing changing. The 2000's was a progression to tv and little about the song and lyrical content but whether it was entertaining visually. Now is the era of the internet and interestingly I feel I have wrestled some control over what I want to listen too or what I think I might want to experience for the first time at any time I might choose. Since the 80's it is the first time I have been really keen to hear new music again.
Banging channels like this bring extra joy watching someone else experience and appreciate music of the past. Very much enjoying the rambles and your thoughts. You are one of very few who offer an intelligent response.

I really appreciated what you had to say regarding today's music. I was in college when MTV showed up and cable was a luxury that college students couldn't afford so really the only time I saw music videos was when I was home on break or if a friend had splurged on cable until I joined the"real world". It took me a long time to appreciate music videos for what they could offer. To me seeing a video of a song I loved & had listened to over & over was like seeing a movie or TV show based on a book I loved & had read multiple times. They never lived up to my imagination and I stubbornly hung onto listening rather than watching music (could have something to do with the fact I was a music major in college 😉).
In the intervening years, I have come to appreciate music videos as their own art form and most importantly they have allowed people in later generations such as yourself exposure to some extremely talented artists. I know that my exposure to artists "before my time" was very limited & I'm sure I missed out on a lot of good music.
The current technology of recording and the social media of today is a double edged sword. It can allow an artist incredible creativity, but it also can allow them to be lazy. Then again there was good & bad "back in my day". 😝

Television promotes 'bubble gum' it has to appeal to a mass audience, but radio contains lots of niche stuff. new music or specialist, doesn't matter if the initial audience is small! Lots of punk and heavy rock still struggles on TV, but if you want to find out about Albanian folk-music or 15th century religious music, or the latest ethnic styles of small island nations, etc. etc. radio has a lot to offer. The deeper meaning is to keep playing non-mainstream interests for people who really LISTEN (to anything that they find interesting).

Very interesting song, thank you. This song is also about how you don't need to use your ears because you no longer have to figure out what the lyrics mean, the video tells you what you are supposed to believe the song means. This is where Queen did us all a favor. Their videos don't tell us what the song is about as a rule, they still leave that up to the listener.

One has to remember that the world wasn't as quick to transition from media to media like now.
Radio was a multi-generational thing - as the song says, everything you needed to know you got on radio. News, sports, music - whatever. I knew people in the mid-70's that still didn't have a TV.
Music Videos kind of were the first dong of the bell for the down slide of radio, and Queen wasn't the only ones to comment on it. 'Video Killed the Radio Star" by The Buggles, 1980 - four years before Radio GaGa.

Love your discussions and your open minded curiosity. I wonder if you'll get curious as to the thanks to Metropolis flashed at the end of the video. Queen were very well educated and had a lot of input to their videos and costumes production design and would have been very mindful of the significance of including iconic imagery and sets homaging the 1927, yes, 1927! now 95 year old black and white movie made pre the Depression and pre WW2 in Germany. Worth a rabbit hole all its own as we watch what people thought the future would be like and here we are struggling with the same themes. Queen knew what they were adding to the decades long discourse. Enjoy.

Love love love your take on Queen. I fell totally in love after I saw Bohemian Rhapsody. There was a silent movie made in the 1930’s called Metropolis. It was redone with 80’s artists including Freddie and the radio Gaga official was straight out of the movie. Keep on keeping on

I suggest you listen to Teo Torriatte by Queen, it’s a song they made for their Japanese fans because they loved Queen and appreciated them before they became very popular so Queen made it as a dedication to them. They even sang some verses In Japanese and it is an amazing song. I also suggest you check out Stone Cold Crazy because it will show you how diverse Queen was with their genres in music and how this song was the first Thrash Metal song invented even before Thrash Metal even became a genre.

Interesting listening to you grasp the realities of the music biz. A lot of people just don't get that part of doing music, and it doesn't change just because technology, platform, and format changes.
What some are doing now getting an audience through social media was once done when CDs first came out and musicians were able to record and burn their own CDs to send to broadcast radio & TV or sell directly to fans at their live concerts.
But the smarter musicians were quite aware of the jackals and vultures in the music industry. I want to make you aware of Billy Joel, who knew what he was doing from the start and was lucky enough to make the right decisions at the right time and grow his brand and fanbase.
You may have heard of his most popular song "Piano Man". He wrote this song after his first discouraging encounter in the music industry. He ended up having to sit out a year at the start of his career to run out time on an unfair music contract. He took that time working in piano bars in California, where he ended up writing his observational "Piano Man", a song that culminates in his piano bar audience recognizing his obvious performance talent and asking why the hell he's working in a piano bar instead of recording or doing full concerts (I'm filling in what I think he means by the lyric "They put bread in my [tip] jar and say 'Man, what are YOU doing HERE?'). th-cam.com/video/gxEPV4kolz0/w-d-xo.html
Billy Joel has always been aware of the need to balance the creative urge with commercial realities. Still, he managed to do honor to both, so he was able to continue to make a living doing music. "Cold Spring Harbor" was his first album, but put out with an error: the recordings were slightly speeded up, which gave him a 'helium'/'chipmunk' quality which the record company refused to correct, so he refused to do anything else until the contract lapsed. "Piano Man" was his 2nd album, but he got some criticism for being "too commercial' with some of the songs. So he addressed this issue on his 3rd album "Streetlife Serenade" in a song titled "The Entertainer". th-cam.com/video/d_VHFyaSXQw/w-d-xo.html
Please do a reaction to "The Entertainer" at least and see what I mean by having self-awareness of the practicalities of making a commercial musical career. I think it's an interesting counterpoint to Queen's "Radio Gaga". I hope you'll also do "Piano Man" and enjoy the music and the poetry of that song. I have to say it's a period piece, from when group sing-alongs in a piano bar was the karaoke of its day, when people's social life was hanging out in bars, and the waitresses bringing drinks had to 'play sexual politics' to keep men's hands to themselves yet still encourage getting tips. I always thought of the bar in "Piano Man" as kind of a loser's bar, since everyone there seemed to suffer from dreams they each had no real confidence in reaching. Great lyrics.

When I was around 10 or 11 I got my first 9V Transistor radio, AM only - the best tunes were on WOKY with DJ Bob Barry, Milwaukee.
Then in the late 60's early 70's it all changed for us. Radios started to have an FM band included with the AM band in the late 1950s and 1960s. By the 1970s, FM audience size surpassed that of AM, and the gap has been growing ever since. Am being mostly relegated now to talk radio, sports, religion, and "oldies" station. Check out a great song by Steely Dan called "FM (No Static At All)"
Because it was true, we didn't lose the station because we drove under a bridge, and the static was virtually gone. And coincidentally, that's when the world exploded with great music!

VIDEO KILLED TYHE RADIO..... a song that came out in the era of transition from RADIO TO VIDEO in the MTV heyday. I remember the first music video played on MTV. I wonder if any of your viewers know the name of the song, the artist/band and the year and album name of the artist/band? This is a game that my friends and I played when we would hear music on the RADIO. We would find out the information about the music we were listening to and it was kind of a trivia challenge of sorts.
I absolutely love the way you break down songs, the artist or band informatyion when you have the information in front of you but also when you ask us for input and our basic knowledge of the music you are listening to and reviewing. PLEASE DO NOT CHANGE THE WAY YOU DO YOU AND YOUR CHANNEL. WE ALL LOVE YOU FOR THE WAY YOU DO WHAT YOU DO AND WE WHO HAVE BEEN WATCHING YOU FROM THE FIRST REACTION YOU HAVE LISTED HERE ON YOU TUBE, IT IS SO WONDERFUL TO SEE HOW YOUR TASTE IN MUSIC HAS DEVELOPED... Welcome to the world of being an eclectic. You have a long way my friend and I have tons of suggestions for you ranging all the way back before I was born, music I grew up listening to on the Victrola on 78's. Dating the shit out of myself here, but still music is there for us to cut our teeth and grow as human beings I do believe.
As always, respectfully submitted to you Mr. TooBlunt with love and admiration for your channel. Debra

Thru all the years before this song, radio disc jockeys could play whatever they wanted, whenever they wanted. This song is about corporate taking over & telling disc jockeys what they could play & when. Every station eventually had a set playlist that repeated over & over.

In terms of attempting to avoid copyright strikes, some channels have some success by blurring the video so it is not clear, or otherwise make it less clear, bars or such, I think. Just something to think about going forward, maybe blurring the videos will help you. It is a minor annoyance on our end, some do love to complain, but with knowledge, it is understandable. Up to you, man. Keep being awesome.

@@TooBlunt I was suggesting that you do it all the time, why wait and see, just do it normally and save some hassles. You can see it normally, right? Only we see the blurred version? If that's the case, go for it; of course there will be complaints, but be honest about it and most people should understand. Many people don't really understand some of the problems creators face, reactors especially. A couple of channels I watch are open about it and I have a small idea of how bad/annoying it is, not being a creator myself. Cover your arse first; you're an awesome, intelligent, thoughtful reactor and many people prefer that over other factors, they'll/we'll stick around regardless. Or, at least, I hope so.

@cheryl flam is completely correct. I stopped listening to radio back when MTV came out. That completely took over music (in my mind). I could finally put a face or band to the music. Now I stream and can choose my music and can even ask for a genre to get new music. I choose the type of music I consume and imho it all started w MTV. Today I wouldn’t watch MTV or VH1 if you paid me but things changed. If they hadn’t gotten so far from their original format I still would. Anyway, who knows what tomorrow will bring in music. Great reaction as always! Can’t wait for the next.
Oh btw, I went to look at a new car the other day. The dealership only allowed their cars to play country music on the radio. All I heard was country and ridiculous “humor “ and at that time I thought to myself…who listens to radio like this anymore? So kind of ironic 😂. I turned it completely off after I changed it to something a little better so I could test the speakers.

Comment number 2. I hope you get this one. In my first, I mentioned how Roger Taylor, the drummer wrote this. Note how the intro is very drum dominant. John Deacon's hits, You're My Best Friend, Another One Bites the Dust and Under Pressure all start out with a Bass riff.
After hearing your reaction days ago, I somehow got a song in my head that was from Roger Taylor's solo work. His first album was called Fun In Space and is drum and synthesizer dominant. He did 100% of the vocals and all instruments except guitar on some tracks. I saw your reaction to I'm in Love with my Car a few weeks ago and you like that, but I'm going to suggest one from that first solo album from 1980.
Laugh or Cry is a nice waltz. Give it a listen here: th-cam.com/video/G3i36eQe-Wc/w-d-xo.html
The rest of the album is also great especially with headphones.
