I think the issue with "diet" drinks is that they were not developed for people who are "on a diet" in terms of trying to lose/control their weight but rather for those who have to stick to a sugar free/controlled diet due to conditions such as diabetes.

Here in the Czech Republic coca cola also uses corn syrup while Pepsi uses sugar. And there is a big difference in taste. That is why many people prefer Pepsi over coca cola. But we have our own "cola" called kofola which is BTW made from herbs. So kofola is number one, the Pepsi and coca cola is the last option when those are not avaible and you really want cola.

Its used in the US because its cheaper then sugar Studies show that high fructose corn syrup increases your appetite and it promotes obesity more than regular sugar. “High fructose corn syrup also contributes to diabetes, inflammation, high triglycerides, and something we call non-alcoholic fatty liver disease,” Compared with regular sugar, it's cheaper and sweeter, and is more quickly absorbed into your body. But eating too much high fructose corn syrup can lead to insulin resistance, obesity, type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure. peace out

Coca-Cola and Pepsi were originally marketed as stomach tonics, so the coca extract might have been a mild pain killer.

Coca is similar to camphor (make sure you get the right type, far from all are edible) in terms of taste - it is what gives cola its rounded "lingering bite" (a lot easier to tell apart in flat cola, when the carbonation doesn't assult your tastebuds. also, tastes are stronger in drinks roughly at room temperature).
In the west the use of camphor in cooking basically disappeared in the early 1900s, but still is used in the middle east and india.

Drinking non-sugar cola for other reasons than taste and calories, I can think of few:
    * Tactile - non-sugar colas are not sticky (some people have strong dislikes towards that sticky feeling)
    * Allergies/comfort - non-sugar softdrinks are far less prone to attract many insects (non-sugar is a lot nicer at picnics in many parts of the world for this reason)
    * Religion - corn that has been allowed to ferment isn't allowed during passover for some variations of judaism, so corn syrup is a no-go, but aspartame is usually seem as ok (this also is why the "yellow cap" cola appears during pesach/passover (roughly easter) is USA, it is cola made with cane sugar for religions reasons) (again, it varies - ask your rabbi)
    * Health - flat and/or room-temp cola is a common household remedy for stomach issues in many countries, and sugar is quite harsh on an upset stomach (or if warmed), so non-sugar cola is a lot nicer then.
    * Health - if you still have a craving but want cola for non-calorie health reasons then the non-sugar is better (more studies than not where they compare health effects on babies where the mothers drank non-trivial amounts of soda has shown less issues where the non-sugar variants was being used. The amount of sugar in soft drinks are downright scary at times) (consult a professional if relevant)
(Sidenote about aspartame - while everything in unhealthy in excess the current safety limits for aspartame is rather high, we are talking about a 1kg (~2lbs) (80kg/175lbs person) per year before we get into "ok, we lack data here, but we know that on the other side there might be a correlation" which are the max EU levels allowed. We are not talking 14-16cans (33cl/~12floz) of cola per day every day (in reality that would be so sweet in would be undrinkable, only about a third is used at most, we are now talking 42-48cans per day every day.... if you down 14L/3.5gal of liquid every day you probably have other health issues of more urgency.
(No, do not try it - any of it))

I hate any soda that uses artificial sweeteners, that is the big downside of the UK sugar tax a lot of soda manufacturers now add artificial sweeteners to their regular drinks to reduce the sugar level, this means we in the UK do not have a choice to have some soda brands without artificial sweeteners, at least with Coke Classic we in the UK can get a drink without artificial sweeteners. I would rather drink plain water that anything with either artificial sweeteners or steviol glycosides in, not only do they taste bad, they make me more thirsty and give me headaches/migraines.

I grew up with Diet Coke instead of Coca-Cola because I'm type-1 diabetic. Liquid sugar is a bit much to handle when you're micromanaging your metabolism. This, coupled with my general like of more bitter flavours, means that regular Coke (and Coke Zero) just taste awful to me.

As up until recently 'France' did indeed contain the highest levels of Suger per Vol compared to the rest of Europe. There's actually up~to~date online data charts for further information. I have to say diet coke taste gross over here in the USA compared to UK, it’s way too sweet. I rarely drank pop in UK but when I did it was diet. I have the sugar type in the USA because I can’t stand the fake sweetness of the diet here.

In the Uk you used to be able to get Coke Zero Original flavour which I preferred to the new taste.

Do not drink diet coke, or any sort of diet soda, they are ripping you off bigtime if you do. Remember the miniscule amount of sweetner in the diet drink as opposed to the more in quantity and cost of suger. And yet they both cost the same. 🧐

Oddly, I despise Coca-Cola (the product) and I always have done (for over 65 years). I dislike cola-type pop, whoever makes it, but Coca-Cola is by far the worst. I have only ever drunk it out of politeness, because somebody has given it to me with no real alternative, and I didn't want to hurt their feelings, but I find it nauseating.

I think the Americans don’t have as big sizes because I think Americans (correct me if I’m wrong) will drink outta a bottle rather than pour into a glass which I think is more British (in modern times)
Look at milk for instance, Americans get gallons, we get litres and it’s like vice versa when compared to coke
Now would I say Americans would drink more milk yes, as to Americans not being a tea nation we only pour small amounts in tea which is why I believe we have tiny tiny cartons of milk which is like Americans smallest coke (which you’d prob mix with an alcoholic drink)
