I've been a long time sumo fan but never had the chance to witness one live. It's such a spiritual experience with the amount of culture and tradition that this sport carries with it.
-- thought this was going be okay. It's much better than okay. Something about a personal's perspective on sumo (vs professional made video) that makes this enjoyable.
Listen, I had zero interest in sumo........ Until I sat down one night and watched a couple of your older videos..... Now I'm so hooked on it.... Thanks so much!
You are so welcome! I'm glad that you enjoyed some of our videos. The next tournament (basho) begins on July 9 through the 23rd. If you don't get NHK World (a kind of PBS from Japan), you can watch the tournament on TH-cam. One channel I really like is @NattoSumo7. He also has a channel on Rumble.com called "Nattosumo." He shows the three highest levels every day.
I love sumo!!! Thank you for this video!! It's crazy you got to see the legendary Konishiki up close, he is such a great guy!! You also got to see so many popular wrestlers like Ura (the pink mawashi!) and I'm completely jealous!
We're glad you liked our video. We are planning on making one soon that features some of the bouts we saw. We also hope to go to a basho next year in either Osaka or Nagoya, depending when we are there.
Thanks a lot for this insight! I watch sumo for 3 years (mainly with Natto and Chris), and I hadn't realized that the dohyo-iri was made in two part, West and East sides. Shame on me...
Thanks for the view! I watch Natto and Chris, too. I'm glad you found our video insightful. I wanted to show things that aren't normally shown on the average video.
got into sumo a few years ago after seeing recently retired Tochinoshin on youtube...dude is almost 400 pounds and still somehow has muscle definition!!! then, saw Terunofuji fall all the way to the bottom division before ascending to the heights of Yokozuna...that's the sports equivalent of being down 9 runs in the bottom of the 9th with 2 outs and walking it off that inning.
For the third time, too! I once met him in Nagoya when he was still an active rikishi. I met him again in Vancouver, Canada in 1998 when he was a commentator for the exhibition tournament, and then this year at the January basho. He's a really cool guy. Thanks for watching!
Oh wow 😮 how fascinating it is to watch this video and see these Sumo Wrestling!! If I enjoyed it this much I can't imagine how excited I would be to see it in Person!! So much traditions and culture it's truly Amazing to witness!! Phenomenal 🎉 Video and Thanks for Sharing💚🤍🍀🤍💚
I didn't get a sense of how long it was between matches. Since most bouts are over in seconds, how many bouts are there per hour? I am a typical American with a short attention span. Thanks.
The two highest divisions usually last from 2 to 6 p.m. The pre-match rituals last about 4 minutes. If you watch the Sumo Digest on TV, showing just the fights, it takes about 30 minutes for the highest division. In reality, that takes about 2 hours. There is a great description here: factsanddetails.com/japan/cat21/sub138/item757.html Thanks for watching!
Thank you! Inside the stadium, I used my Nikon D-3500 camera and a Nikon 75-300 mm lens. Outside, I mainly used my DJI Osmo Action camera. Eventually, we'll upgrade, but for now, I'm just using this inexpensive setup. I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
Hi, going to Ryogoku by boat is a good idea, I like to try that sometime. My wife's name is Sonoko and we both love Sumo. We once watched real Sumo in Osaka sometime ago from 2nd floor seats, but being there was great experience
We've been to the March basho in Osaka, too (years ago). We want to go to Fukuoka in the near future. Nagoya is also an amazing time! Glad you liked the video!
Sumo tickets can cost anywhere from $35 to $400, depending on how good the seats are. Food costs vary depending on how much you eat. If you have one meal at the venue, it would probably cost around $20.
You should have showed 14 minutes of two rikishi preparing their bout, and after the Gyogi started show a sign with: "the bout lasted 5 seconds and ended by yorikiri"😂 while you were on your way back from the toilet...💩

Thanks for watching out video. The next tournament starts next weekend! We can't wait.
No one talking about how you very casually got some great footage of Hakuho 😂
So far, no. Thanks for watching.
12.10 the other sumo that was sitting who was fallen over, poor guy, that must have hurt
They train how to fall, but sometimes injuries do occur. Thanks for watching our video! We'll have some more sumo content coming up soon.

@@adventureswithmarkandsonoko Thank you.... Now I'm hooked so I'll be watching...
Konishski seems like such a good guy in everything I've seen him in.
He was really cool. I had met him in the mid 90s, and he was approachable then, but now he is even more laid back.
@@adventureswithmarkandsonoko Hawaiians man. Every one from there I've met are just cool fucking people lol
Thank you that was very interesting I enjoyed the way that you kind of showed the whole trip.
We're glad you liked it! We wanted to share the whole day.

Super great 😮❤ I love it. It's so admirable what they sacrifice and put in it
I agree. Thank you for watching our video! We can't wait to go again!

Thanks for watching our video, Joshua. Yes, there are so many amazing things that happen in the sumo world. It's easy to get hooked by it.
You got to meet konishki ?! that's awesome!

Great seeing footage of Enho.
Thanks. He's definitely one of our favorites. I hope he gets back to the top division again!
Very entertaining to watch
Thanks! We're glad you enjoyed it!
Enho's match was WILD
I agree! He is one of my favorite rikishi. Unfortunately, it looks like he may move down to the unsalaried level.
Tasty summary! Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed watching our video!
Sumo for ever
Thanks for watching! We'll have more sumo videos up this summer.

@@adventureswithmarkandsonoko Your Welcome :-)
Thanks! A cool little insight.
We're glad you liked it! Thanks for watching!
looks like such a quality time!
It was fantastic! So different from just watching on TV. We highly recommend attending a match if you have the chance.
I didn't get a sense of how long it was between matches. Since most bouts are over in seconds, how many bouts are there per hour? I am a typical American with a short attention span. Thanks.

The camera views were better than those of the NHK, or the other competitor. Which camera & lens did you use? Superb experience.😃

Enho!
I had to include Enho in our video!
Is that Ikioi at 2:51?
Yes! He was really cool. He hammed it up for a couple of fans. Nice guy.
Nice video! Man those drummers are up high! Wonder how many earthquakes they felt up there!?
I'm sure they've felt a few! Listening to the drummers was so cool - definitely worth hearing in person. Thanks for watching our video!
So what was it like? No opinions? No thoughts? No impressions?
The video is of our impressions. Thanks for watching!
How much is the whole day cost, including sumo tickets $
Sumo tickets can cost anywhere from $35 to $400, depending on how good the seats are. Food costs vary depending on how much you eat. If you have one meal at the venue, it would probably cost around $20.
there is no such thing as a part-time sumo wrestler, its all or nothing for these guys!
Anyone know what the white stuff they throw is, and why they throw it? Salt? superstition/good luck/traction?
Is salt, part of the ritual (shintoism) to get rid off the bad spirits.
It's salt. It's a tradition that is supposed to purify the ring.

U.S. President's Cup? It's Trump's Cup specifically designed to dominate the Emperor's Cup.
It's officially called the US President's Cup (I read the card next to it). Thanks for watching the video. We hope you liked it!
