    And a big one not on the list but sadly has to be said, don't insult people. Ooblets made a right hash of it when they got Epic Store exclusivity after promising a Steam release but when on the offensive and ended up looking worse for it. Be the bigger person and don't feed the Trolls. Also Mighty No. 9's "anime fan on prom-night" line still haunts it to this day.

      Speaking of Mighty No. 9, I'd also add find a PR firm that will also not disrespect your fanbase. Comcept made a grave mistake hiring 8-4 Productions and especially Dina Karam as their community manager. It took years before the fans (myself included) would ever forgive Comcept for their incompetence and give Mighty No. 9 a chance. Even then, many of the crowdfunding backers, whom were betrayed and had their privileges revoked out of malice (again, myself being one of them) still never forgave either the dev, pub, Kenji, nor Dina.
      As for myself, I forgave the developer (even their founder Kenji Inafune) but no longer trust them to hire competent PR nor community management anymore; my hatred for the former PR firm and especially Dina still forever lingers far and wide.
      EDIT: Also want to add that despite forgiving Comcept, I will NEVER EVER crowdfund or pre-order any of their products ever again. I will just wait until they release naturally and consider buying (or avoiding) them then.

      I still find the "anime fan on prom night" line hilarious. Mostly because on how tone deaf it was. Who the hell do they think their target demographic was?

    • @cyberpunkdenton9497

      @@Adidaas what was the line?
      Edit: Anime fan on prom-night? Is that it,
      How is that offense? Sorry for so many questions.

    Good point in particular about questioning the PR firm. Since they're used to talking for a living they can make themselves seem more suited to handle your product than they actually are. And the language of games is really particular so you need the right company.

    Awesome tips. Marketing is definitely one of the aspect that you don't really consider while your knee deep in code and making art assets. Can't be understated how important it is.
    Much appreciate the quick digestable tidbits on what to do and avoid!

    wow this seems really useful! You should interview some more successful gamedevs (maybe solo) and see what they think!

      Thank you! Thomas Brush, shaun spalding, and blackthorn prod (noah) have both had varying success in their released games. Perhaps they could offer some collective thoughts on the game industry in terms of marketing in general!

    Serious question: why do you assume everyone wants to release their game on steam? and why do you give advice regarding steam only? What abour devs wanting to release on consoles?

    • @sprites4ever482
      @sprites4ever482 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Steam is the most accessible (although inefficient and pricey) platform for Indie games, which is why AGD use it as standard.
      They have made videos specifically for other platforms, though.

    • @aethix1986
      @aethix1986 4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Because this is aimed more at entry-level indie developers, and you need to have some level of demonstrable success before you can secure a license to develop for consoles.

      If you want to get to console market, do what this man says, so you will have a game on steam to show before pitching it to console store team, or your next upcoming game, it will boost your chances immensely.

    So....I can hire people to do PR for me in other countries? How much does it cost?(approximately).
    I am asking because it's impossible for me to handle PR since in my poor country there are 0 people that are interested in games and since I don't and can't get a visa to travel to EU. Even if I have a decent amount of money, I can't/hard to buy a visa since I am from Yemen (google it).
    Do you know how the hell could I travel to EU?
    Can someone like, be a host for me in those countries?
    will publishers help me with travel issues if my game is successful enough?
    Do you think someone can be successful living in poor countries such as Yemen online?
    I fucking had enough of this bullshit.
    I am desperate as hell man.
