  • Unboxing and talking about my custom designed samurai armor from Iron Mountain Armory. I had them withhold any pictures or posts about it until after I filmed the unboxing, and then I received them to use during editing. This was a "one take" video, and is my unscripted reaction to everything.
    It has a number of customizations and upgrades, including:
    * Upgraded to Taisho class
    * Customized the plates of the kote (arms)
    * Added waki-biki (armpit guards)
    * Added a hand-carved dragon crest
    * Added the hakama (pants) and gi (shirt) worn under the armor, with fabric of my choice
    * My color selections for all lacing: main, secondary, trim, etc as well as the patterned leather (egawa) and edging
    * Built to my own measurements
    I chose this one because it is very similar to a suit from the Sengoku period in a museum in Tokyo.
    If you want to see more of this excellent armor, subscribe and like the video. I'll be doing detailed videos of it, as well as cutting with various sharp weapons while wearing it (katana, odachi, naginata; maybe more).

      @SamuraiJames  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, that is the normal spot. My suit was customized to upgrade everything from Gashira to Taisho class: the odoshi, shaping the plates, paint on the plates, and all other upgrades the taisho class normally has. I wanted this specific style which isn't in the Taisho line and asked them for an upgrade (for higher price). I have a link to it in my description.

    • @SamuraiJames

      Thank you! It's the taisho class brocade "B5" option, which I don't see on their site now. They have more options now than when I ordered mine last spring (I've had it for over a year), and "AS9" looks like the closest match. Send them a message and ask, as they may still have it available. They had a few more options when I bought mine that weren't online yet and were brand new. I'm planning a detailed video with close-ups for next weekend.

    Before I saw this I was very certain I didnt want green for mine. But now? Maybe with some white to break it up. Too bad they dont have a nice teal lace option. Maybe theyll do a custom dye job?

    • @SamuraiJames
      @SamuraiJames  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      In the past they have mentioned custom dye colors, but there was a minimum order needed to do so (multiple suits worth). Could be worth asking them about.

    • @redwa11er
      @redwa11er 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SamuraiJames I did today, actually. Basically they said they can't gurantee the colour, it would take about 3 extra months, and could cost about $500. But still sounds possible. I'm surprised teal isn't a base option given that I have seen historical suits done in that colour.

    • @SamuraiJames
      @SamuraiJames  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@redwa11er I kinda recall 1 or 2 historical suits with teal, though I don't recall if they were faded with age or newer re-lacings. Probably a business choice to not carry teal if it isn't ordered often enough? At least it's a potential option.

    Hey my Dude, you're not used to me, as I'm new around here, but...
    I'll just say this...
    🦊🚬~i know there's some people in life that look at it as silly or a waste, but you know better, and take it to heart, clearly...all of it, including the morality...and you believe, rightly, that it has made/makes you a better Man.
    Which it does, as long as you're not setting punji pits, or determined to turn the homestead into Himeji Castle🏯..if only the HOA would grant the exemption 😰😉
    🦊🚬~in other words, that must be a wonderful wife you got, but nobody's Perfect, and just gently remind her that it's important, if only, because it's a part of what makes the person she loves, while you gently remind yourself how wonderful she is to love someone
    in full custom made armor👹💕
    Don't worry, you'll get used to it🌬️🔮

    Maybe I missed it in the video, but how much did this armor cost?

    • @SamuraiJames
      @SamuraiJames  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It has a lot of upgrades and tweaks, best to contact Iron Mountain / Michael Asterita if you want something similar because I had lots of individual add-ons that altered the price. Here is the base armor: shop.samurai-armor.com/product/odoshi-scale-gashira-samurai-gusoku/?v=7516fd43adaa
      Add-ons included upgrading it to taisho class quality and brass trim on lots of different pieces. Each one is a separate price so you can mix and match what you want (or don't). I don't want to put a price on it for them.

    Samurai armor actually weighs about as much as European armor, 50 - 60lbs. A lot of modern reproductions are lighter.

    • @SamuraiJames
      @SamuraiJames  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Correct, my repro samurai is around 35 pounds (by memory), and my repro European is about 75 pounds (slightly heavier due to thicker mild steel vs historical heat treated carbon, because of budget). In context here, about half the weight.

    • @outsideiskrrtinsideihurt699
      @outsideiskrrtinsideihurt699 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m pretty sure samurai armor would be closer to a 40-50 lb range. Obviously historical samurai armor wouldn’t be HALF the weight of knightly but the difference is notable.

    • @ericnino6048
      @ericnino6048 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@outsideiskrrtinsideihurt699 no, a full set of Yoroi is roughly 60 pounds. Of course there is variation. But generally speaking about 60. O-Yoroi could weight more than your average full set of knightly armor.

    • @outsideiskrrtinsideihurt699
      @outsideiskrrtinsideihurt699 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ericnino6048 then why is it that you can swim in yoroi but you can’t in a full set of full-plate?

    • @ericnino6048
      @ericnino6048 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@outsideiskrrtinsideihurt699 don’t know how to answer that. I’ve never seen a person in knightly armor try to swim. But Yoroi usually requires that quit a few no pieces be taken off before you can, namely the Haidate. Also again, modern reproductions are lighter. I’ve seen people swim in Yoroi but it’s modern armor. Modern armor is lighter because originally it was recreated for cinema, but the Japanese actor complained of the weight, so they lightened it up.
