    I just discovered this channel. I have been a bujinkan practitioner for the last 6 months but have kept up with the art for several years now. I have had my eye on a set of this armor but there isn't a ton of good info out there so I was excited when I found this video on the samurai armor facebook page. I instantly fell in love with this channel and look forward to exploring the rest of the content.

    Great video on the armor and loved seeing Eldgrim's reaction. He was looking a little sad not being able to play with the "new toy", so Thrand you timed it perfectly! I was not expecting anything other than the Nimado Elite Armor, and when I realized that it only fit Thrand I admit to feeling a bit crestfallen. Totally caught me by surprise when I saw that extra suit in the box. By the way, what do you call that armor?

    • @mjaster78
      @mjaster78 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I certainly don't blame you feeling that way. Wearing custom fitted armor is quite a nice feeling and owning it is even better. I am glad he was able to keep it a surprise.
      That is actually a new model suit yet to be named. We are taking suggestions if you would like to suggest one.

    huge congrats on getting this armour, guys! Glad to see the funding campaign went through, and super looking forward to seeing some some testing and sparring between you guys. I bet Eldgrimr has some envy to work out on you, Thrand, good thing that armour is good quality! Hah!
    EDIT: Just saw that heartwarming moment at 10:40, that was absolutely fucking brilliant! So happy for you guys!
    Also noting that the video quality and sound quality seem to be getting better, too. Very crisp video today, still a bit of back noise on the mic, but it's a noticeable improvement from your earlier vids.
    This channel is really evolving into something amazing, glad I've been able to see you guys grow from two guys in your back yard to full on funded testing with two suits of armour!
    Best of luck to the both of you, and super eager to see the next vids you've got coming!
    EDIT 2:
    Just want to let you guys know that seeing the sheer happiness on your faces in this vid inspired me to support you on Patreon. I can't make afford much more than $5 a month, but every dollar counts! Here's to you guys!

    Both armours look awesome! Suggestions: climbing, rolling, tumbling, range of motion, kicking, punching, grappling, throws, takedowns, archery. Further a 360 deg view of the armour while being worn. Then point out the various sections and show the weak and strong points and how different stances open or close vulnerabilities. Finally a piece by piece close up...disassembled talking about the materials, relative strength, design/use for each part. :)

    Those look fantastic. If I got one, I think I would get an earlier version, I love how they have gigantic shield-like shoulder protection, and I just love the way that style looks. That was some impressive generosity both on the part of your patreon supporters and on the makers of the armor.

    Such a great piece of work. I really do find it sad how many people think that Japanese armor and equipment is "inferior". For the warrior, an armor that protects is an armor that works.

    • @libertyprime6932
      @libertyprime6932 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well it objectively is inferior to Milanese or Gothic plate, but it's also much cheaper and still very effective, so it's still very good armor

    +Thegn Thrand
    Regarding samurai armor:
    The Iron Mountain does a great job, but they give you a 80% suit of armor which lacks of some main pieces.
    Some history if you want:
    If we look at the 16th century, we have the creation of the tosei gusoku. The lamellar armor made of small kozane was replaced with a new type of armor around the 1490-1520 (aftermath of the Onin War ), the "mogami dou"; which made the production of armor easier since they adopt a new way of lacing, different from the previous one.
    This highlight that japanese armor was already in the direction of creating new armor for the new sengoku period, even before the introduction of guns. However, after the arrival of Guns in 1543 we have the final stage of armors, with the creation of new models like the houtoke dou, the sendai dou, the niou dou or the okegawa dou. Some of this armor are made of single plates, other with overlapped plates laced or rivited.
    Some daimyo also started to use hybrid between the european breastplate and the japanese armor, however is not true at all that european armors came in usage because they were better; it was more of a fashion thing since all of the models I've listed before have the same efficiency as a european hybrid armor (bullet proof), The namban dou.
    Even the kabuto developed to have the shikoro closed to the neck, i.e The zunari kabuto.
    The gaps;
    Nobles generals who fight on the battlefield were covered in steel as good as knights in europe.
    The main gaps are around the neck / upper chest, under the arms, the armpit, behind the legs, hands, on the belly where there is no armor, and feet. If you dig a lot, you can find auxiliary pieces that were used to cover and protecte this zones.
    The neck was protected in the front by the "tare", the zone around the neck by the shikoro itself and by some padded jackets with "kikko armor inside", small metal hexagon scales. Those jackets could provides protection just for the shoulder, like the "tata-eri" or for all the upper body like the "manchira", or the "manjunowa". The neck around can also be protected by "guruwa".
    The upper body was again protected by those padded jacket that were also made of maille, or kikko armor. The zone around the main cuirass was in this way flexibile but still protected. Plus under the neck we could find some upper body protection like the "nodowa".
    Under the armpit: this zone was protected by those jackets or by the "wakibiki" some special pieces of steel that protect the zone near the body. Also in some suit of armor like this,
    ( www.google.gr/search?q=tosei+gusoku+book&client=ms-android-samsung&prmd=isnv&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwic6f-2lKrOAhVsK8AKHeTUAJgQ_AUIBygB&biw=360&bih=559#tbm=isch&q=tosei+gusoku+exploding+rocks&imgrc=xK2P98UR1TRafM%3A )
    a pattern of maille was used to protect under the arms, plus the kote is padded itself.
    The belly was protected by "kyushu-ate", the feet by kogake and the hands by tekko plus some leather or maille gauntles; also some models of tekko could cover all the hands, like this
    ( www.google.gr/search?q=tosei+gusoku+book&client=ms-android-samsung&prmd=isnv&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwic6f-2lKrOAhVsK8AKHeTUAJgQ_AUIBygB&biw=360&bih=559#tbm=isch&q=tosei+gusoku+exploding+rocks&imgrc=WXccqdhADESQ2M%3A
    )
    The haidate could also be wrapped around the leg with laces to gain extra protection.
    Here are sources of what I mention:
    commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Japanese_auxiliary_armours
    commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Gusoku_(individual_armour_components)
    Keep in mind that some of this pieces were armor itself and weren't worn togheter with tosei gusoku, like hachigane.
    Cutting laces;
    Even if actually it was a technique, most of the main lacing were protected by maille and steel plates like here:
    For The cuirass:
    www.google.gr/search?q=tosei+gusoku+book&prmd=isnv&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwj9qIXglqrOAhWHAcAKHT3EBC8Q_AUIBygB&biw=360&bih=559#tbm=isch&q=tosei+gusoku+&imgrc=Q_lYslcho-PuiM%3A
    For the belly:
    www.google.gr/search?q=tosei+gusoku+book&prmd=isnv&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwj9qIXglqrOAhWHAcAKHT3EBC8Q_AUIBygB&biw=360&bih=559#tbm=isch&q=tosei+gusoku+exploding+rocks&imgrc=EB0-rzW-J_M9_M%3A

      Great and informative post. Yes, there are many additional armor parts that can be added to the samurai armor, which also adds many different costs to the armor as well. There where also many different style of crafting armor, padding the kote, adding extra maile, extra kikko, wabaki, etc. This is all options that can be added, removed as needed / wanted and most importantly afforded (or found on a dead samurai).

    Honestly, if you planning on investing in more armor, you should invest in the armor, clothing and plaster so you ship off your body parts to smiths and so you have subsequent clothing to support the armor you are wearing.

    • @mjaster78
      @mjaster78 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The nice thing about samurai armor is that there aren't really any plates that "form" exactly to the body, like in European suits. As long as we know your general body measurements we can use an ancient mathematical formula to craft the armor to a very comfortable and almost exact fit. As Eldgrim said, we can do it just by eye in most cases. But yes, it would be much easier if we had body castings ;0)

      I very nearly wept with joy when I saw that armor. it has always been my philosophy that one should be grateful for what one has and to not covet that which another has been blessed to have. being content with having the Tatami armor is the emotion I had going into this video, so, yeah, when I saw that armor I was caught unawares. I was nearly speechless.

    I love the look of the yoroi and that it can be made quite compact and weights less than European armor.
    The one thing I don't understand is, why they made it so complicated to put it on?
    It is almost as slow as putting on a complex european full arming suit and putting on a gambesson, mail, brigandine, bracers, grieves, gorget and helmet would be much faster (but it offers similar protection).

    • @mjaster78
      @mjaster78 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It really isn't that complicated... just looks complicated. Once you know how to put on the armor it takes about 3 minutes to put the armor on yourself.

    • @edi9892
      @edi9892 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** there's too much knot binding involved.

    • @shrekas2966
      @shrekas2966 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      actualy, o yoroi weights alot compared to plate. its because small plates are segmented overlaping each other.
      if you compare europeans armour of the same timeline, it weights the same. sometimes more, sometimes less.

    • @edi9892
      @edi9892 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Shrekas 2 If you compare it with the outfit I described, then it should be comparable weight, but if you compare it to a 3/4 or full plate armor then no.

    • @shrekas2966
      @shrekas2966 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      edi well its very hard to understand what did you compare. You just compared any o yoroi to any european aemour. Some o yoroi can weight 35kg and europeans can wear just cloth protection for their torso, so i guess it wont even weight 10kg.
      Full plate weights the same as o yoroi on broad scale. It is from 15 to 25 kg. Transitional plate weights more, because you have many gaps and have to wear alot of mail.

The lamellar armor made of small kozane was replaced with a new type of armor around the 1520, the "mogami dou" which made the production of armor easier since they adopt a new way of lacing, different from the previous one.
      It's easy, however, to see some openigs: were they actually lef unprocted? It depends on the warrior. Nobles general who fight on the battlefield were covered in steel and iron as good as knights.
      The upper body was again protected by those padded jacket that were also made of chainmaille, or kikko armor. The zone around the main cuirass was in this way flexibile but still protected. Plus under the neck we could find some upper body protection like the "nodowa".
      Under the armpit: this zone was protected by those jackets or by the "wakibiki" some special pieces of metal that protect the zone near the body. Also in some suit of armor like this,
      ( www.google.gr/search?q=tosei+gusoku+book&client=ms-android-samsung&prmd=isnv&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwic6f-2lKrOAhVsK8AKHeTUAJgQ_AUIBygB&biw=360&bih=559#tbm=isch&q=tosei+gusoku+exploding+rocks&imgrc=xK2P98UR1TRafM%3A )
      a pattern of chainmaille was used to protect under the arms, plus the kote is padded itself.
      The belly was protected by "kyushu-ate", the feet by kogake and the hands by tekko plus some leather gauntles; also some models of tekko could cover all the hands, like this
      ( www.google.gr/search?q=tosei+gusoku+book&client=ms-android-samsung&prmd=isnv&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwic6f-2lKrOAhVsK8AKHeTUAJgQ_AUIBygB&biw=360&bih=559#tbm=isch&q=tosei+gusoku+exploding+rocks&imgrc=WXccqdhADESQ2M%3A
      )
      The haidate could also be wrapped around the leg with laces to gain extra protection.
      Here are sources of what I mention:
      commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Japanese_auxiliary_armours
      commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Gusoku_(individual_armour_components)
      Keep in mind that some of this pieces were armor itself and weren't worn togheter with tosei gusoku, like hachigane.
      Final point: cutting laces. Even if actually was a techniques, most of the main lacing were protected by chainmaille And or iron/steel plates like here:
      For The cuirass:

      A really long post but there are still more than thousands thing to say

      @lucanic4328 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Meriadoc Gunson i Know it's freaking long TL;DR:
      Samurai armor with all the auxiliary pieces covered nearly as much as a full plate european armors, and shares the same weak spots, but offers a wider range of movements in the extremites togheter with less weight in it.
      Even if laced, the main strings were protected by plates or mail to prevent the armor to fall down

    • @lucanic4328
      @lucanic4328 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Meriadoc Gunson True, chosing a different style is not a flaw at all.
      During the late XV until the end of the warfare, every metal components in a samurai armor was made of steel with the exception of decorative parts like the maedate, which was made of silver and copper for example.
      The steel was then lacquered to prevent the armor to rust or being ruined by elements.
      Thicnkesses of the plates really depends, but helmets and breastplates were enough thick to prevent a bullet to penetrate the armor as you can see here:
      www.google.it/search?q=tameshi+gusoku&oq=tameshi+gu&aqs=chrome.1.69i57j0l2.5122j0j4&client=ms-android-samsung&sourceid=chrome-mobile&ie=UTF-8#imgrc=QO9vC56xwiNydM%3A
      www.google.it/search?q=tameshi+gusoku&oq=tameshi+gu&aqs=chrome.1.69i57j0l2.5122j0j4&client=ms-android-samsung&sourceid=chrome-mobile&ie=UTF-8#imgrc=WZW6DzpO6lEyhM%3A
      So I have to assume that It was similar to the the thicknesses used in europe.

      Meriadoc Gunson Well I don't know but I suppose that they didn't do by purpose, sometimes iron and steel are mixed up because actually steel is an alloy of carbon and iron.
      Btw here are my sources:
      Several books like this on:
      Sinclaire, Clive (2004). Samurai: The Weapons and Spirit of the Japanese Warrior said that their armor was made of steel.
      Also this paper which is almost complete despite some inaccuracy said that they were made of steel: myarmoury.com/feature_jpn_armour.php
      Even this website of this museum said that there is steel in it:
      www.asianart.org/collections/conservation-of-japanese-armor
      And also this sites which has some basic infos on samurai history:
      www.mylearning.org/japanese-samurai-armour/p-4304/
      If we are talking about high ranking tosei gusoku (The equivalent of a full plate armor in europe) 10/10 is made of steel.

    A suggestion for what to do with the armor. I remember seeing some, i think it was a BBC show, where they compared european armor with samurai armor and claimed that the Samurai armor was superior because it was designed to allow people to scale walls in it. So i would suggest some mobility tests to put the rumors to bed saying you are restricted in your movements in these armors.

      Meriadoc Gunson I am aware, MET did a great review of actual armor and their mobility. The video is on youtube. Still its rather lengthy, and linking it to people is counter productive.

    • @TheVortiger
      @TheVortiger 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      don't trust the BBC. taking something out of it's context and comparing it to something else, then claiming one is superior is bullshit.

    • @lucanic4328
      @lucanic4328 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      one of the main advantage in its design, is that a samurai armor has less metal over the arms and legs and flexible joints compared to european armor; despite giving slighty less protection with a full set equipped with all the auxiliary armor pieces, it's really easy to fight and move in.
      But saying that is better or inferior compated to other armors because of this is bullcrap, is just a choice in its design.

      Not really, samurai armor is made of individual pieces that are easy to replace. The pieces will do their job but won't last several battles like a suite of full plate would.
      On the plus side they'd be much cheaper to replace than a full plate glove.

      indeed what I always find unconfortable in european armor is that is freaking hard to repair if someone dented or pierced your armor hard.
