      I have said this about my cat as well, lol! But we humans get to choose what we eat while our pets can only eat what we give them. I am trying to make him food to save a bit of money on the rising cost of cat food. A case of Natural Balance in 2022 is now $20 more than it was a year ago which was really killing me. So far he loves eating chicken liver and giblets so I'm pretty optimistic that he'll like hearts. Slightly worried about the cost of the supplements though.

    So many veterinarians and dog nutrition experts in these comments 😂 I especially love the ones saying “you should really talk to a vet!” You’re much kinder than I would be if I went to Cornell and had 30+ years experience working as a vet. You are also the ONLY vet or pet nutritionist I have found who GIVES away knowledge with no catch, no hidden fees. On top of this you can read the total break down of her products on her site without purchasing anything. Thank you for all you share! Also, I’ve wanted to ask if when adding sardines to the recipe once it’s cooled you chop/blend them up? Thank you!

    This looks fantastic. Thank you for posting! My wife and I are plant based but our cats are obviously obligate carnivores and we try to feed them the best we know how (and so far, they're very healthy). With the materials shortage (small cans) we can't get healthy cat foods (just the pet store junk) so I'll try your book and blend to get them onto a home made food diet. Any suggestions for transitions away from the store bought pate (that's what is available)?

    I hope this works. My 16yo has stopped eating about 2wks ago. If my vet looks over the product link and gives me the green light, I will be more than happy to try them out and hopefully my cat will be on board too 🤞🏼
    I thought he was mad at me bc I left him home for a couple days while I spent time away at Christmas. He has kidney issues and his vet put him on Hill Prescription Diet, which was fine for the past few months, but he refuses to eat it now. I tried his old food Iiams which he also ignores. I tried straight tuna which he won’t eat but will drink the liquid. I baked him plain chicken breast today and he actually ate up a serving of it! Hallelujah! I know he needs more than that but I’m taking the win for now that he’s actually eating something. He has a vet appointment next week which was the earliest they can get them in because of all the Covid policies that make appointments more difficult. So hopefully we can get him to eat and be healthy again 🙏🏼

    • @HolisticVet
      @HolisticVet  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      You can add more water to the food and blend it in. Perhaps you can blend in a little of the kidney diet as well. Of course, check in with your vet who knows your specific situation but it is critical that they eat. Another trick is to drain the juice from sardines in water (I get at Trader Joe's) or tuna juice and drizzle over the food. Good luck with your senior baby!

    Hi, thanks sooo much for sharing. I’ve always wanted to cook my kitty’s food for a while now but got so overwhelmed at one point with all the million different supplements that’s needed to do it, I didn’t bother.
    But after visiting the grocery store tonight and seeing the ridiculous raise in the price for wet food, I decided to research making the wet food again and I couldn’t be more thankful for coming across your video and website.
    I’m really excited to make it for her and get her started on a healthier diet since she’s had a uti before. I’m gonna purchase your supplements and hopefully she likes it as she’s not that much of a picky eater.
    I was wondering though, should this be fed twice a day or once? Or can I stick to kibbles in the morning and wet food at night? Not sure if I missed it in your cookbook.
    Thanks so much!

    • @HolisticVet
      @HolisticVet  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Lea. I would suggest trying to transition to all wet if possible. Your cat will be healthier for it. I would feed 2/3 in the AM and 1/3 in the PM. Or you could feed the lions share in the morning and just some kibbles to chase down for exercise at night. Let me know if you have any other questions! Good for you and good luck!

    • @HolisticVet

      I'm sorry for the delay, our notifications weren't coming through. There are a few studies that show feeding raw may strengthen a cats immune system. There are many studies that show pathogens in raw food unfortunately. For this reason many veterinarians are opposed to raw feeding. I lightly cook what I feed to my cats.

      Hi, sorry for the delay, our notifications weren't coming through. There is calcium in the premix. You do not need to add additional calcium. Dogs and cats are not able to metabolize fatty acids from flaxseed to DHA efficiently (at best a small percentage) as we are. So they need it in the form of Omega-3 from fish body oils.

    Hello, I have a 9 month old cat who has been battling cystitis since he was 5 months old. We have his symptoms under control will hills prescription urinary as well as transdermal amitriptyline daily. He has recently started refusing to eat his wet food and as soon as he gets the dry prescription food he starts to have brown/ bloody urine again. Is this diet safe for a cat with urinary issues?

    • @HolisticVet
      @HolisticVet  ปีที่แล้ว

      It's tough when urinary issues start so early on. I would check with your veterinarian about mixing in another food. With their approval, you may be able to choose something that makes the most sense based on their history especially if there was crystalluria present. Struvite crystals form in an alkaline environment and oxalate crystals form in an acidic environment. If your cat has hemorrhagic cystitis not related to crystals you could prepare the food and mix it with the canned prescription diet. Whatever you do you must monitor for crystals along the way if they were present. It's a major worry if you have a male cat especially. Really try to avoid dry food.

    I've been making raw cat food for about 6 years using Alnutrin egg shell supplement due to 2 elderly cats having ckd. Would this supplement be appropriate for them? I also use a phosphorus binder in their food.
    I used to feed at least 3 different proteins, but slowly, but surely they've all stopped liking chicken and turkey and only 1 will consistently eat lamb. So now I'm down to just pork. I've tried lightly cooking the chicken and making a pate, but they definitely turn their nose up at that. Thinking I didn't introduce it slow enough for them. So glad I found your channel. With everything going up in price, I'm nervous about keeping a good supply of food for them. I have emergency backup canned food and yes, some dry foods. If things get really, really bad, I wanted something for backup in case of emergencies(like the electricity going out during storms or power grid issues). I was thinking dehydrating some whole food like your recipe could be a good storage solution that wouldn't require a freezer.

      Unfortunately, I can't estimate the monthly cost of feeding your furry family members. It highly depends on where you buy from, if you buy in bulk, the price, etc. We currently don't sell canisters in bulk, but it's on our list! For now, it might be a good option to feed a combination. Your best bet is to buy meat in bulk. I use chicken thighs and grind them myself. I primarily use ground turkey though as it's easier to find. My favorite grind is 2 pounds of ground chicken thighs and 1 pound of ground beef heart.

    Are these hypoallergenic? My cat has developed a food allergy (the vet thinks). She’s been licking for months and started pulling her hair out. She’s now on very expensive “prescription “ cat food and I’d like to move her to something more natural.

      Hi there, there is dehydrated grass fed beef in the premix, calcium, vitamins, minerals, and taurine. You could try it with a unique protein such as bison, lamb, or venison. Feed for 3-6 weeks with little variation to see if there is improvement. Of course, this will not work if they are allergic to beef. Unfortunately, the food allergy tests out there have many false negatives and positives so you really have to do a diet trial.

    How about the taurine?

    • @HolisticVet
      @HolisticVet  ปีที่แล้ว

      Taurine is added to the premix. The premix also has a grass-fed beef heart which is an excellent source of taurine.

    I bought the kit and cookbook and started to feed my young cat homemade food. But she does not like it too much. The cans of cat food she will gobble down, but not the homemade food. I give her a little dry food with it for her teeth and to encourage her to eat it. Any suggestions?

      Dry food does not clean a cat's teeth. It actually causes more plaque buildup because it has more carbohydrates. Think eating hard candy would improve your teeth? Same concept.

    In the feline feeding guide ,cups to feed, is that onece a day?

      It's per day. You can split in to two or three meals.

    Curious how you suggest to store. In the fridge up to a week? Do you reheat it ever or just serve straight cold with no problems. I'm asking because I want to give better quality diet as I have a slightly overweight kitty and he smells, unlike my other kitties.

    • @sjames9036
      @sjames9036 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      A week might be a bit long. Four days at most? I freeze portions, enough for three days in one box. Get plate, spoon out cat food for one meal, microwave twenty seconds. That gets the smell going and melts the gravy/juices. Adjust time for your microwave. Cats will be begging! 😸

      I'm so sorry for the delay, our notifications weren't coming through. My guideline is after cooking, the prepared diet can be refrigerated for 4 days. If feeding raw, the diet should be frozen in servings for up to 4 months and thawed out for each feeding thereafter. Cooked food can be refrigerated for up to 6 months.

    do you use Organic chicken? and you didn’t say how much you used? can you make your own “vet mix”?

    • @HolisticVet
      @HolisticVet  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's your choice. I prefer organic but I'll settle for human grade as it can become cost prohibitive. I do buy in bulk and that helps a lot. You can work with a nutritionist to help you design a premix but unless you mix a very large amount of it you will have difficulty in measuring out some of the trace minerals and vitamins that make up a lesser percentage of the premix.

    Can I use Flax Oil for my Omega 3's for my cat? I use it for my dogs and happen to have it on hand. Thanks. :)

    • @HolisticVet
      @HolisticVet  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Cats and dogs are very inefficient at getting DHA and EPA from flax oil. They may only get a very small fraction as opposed to humans who are more efficient at the conversion. It would be much better for you to use wild caught fish.
