MARS 5HP DIESEL ENGINE - Completed Restoration of Engine No.32

  • See the results of a painstaking two year restoration of this rare diesel engine. One of four known in the world at present.
    Mars diesel engines were made in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia and were not Lister clones. They had thicker 2 3/4" crankshafts and thicker internal pushrods as two of many things that set them apart.
    Not one part was interchangeable between the two types.
    The Lister engine were great engines but were prone to breaking or twisting their crankshafts in industrial workshop situations.
    As the story is told, they were not strong enough to handle the start up load or torque so the Mars company invented a better mouse trap as they say.
    An extraordinary amount of attention has been paid to getting every single part of this engine restored to its original factory specification and finish.
    The paint was matched exactly to the original factory colour (modern day equivalent is Wattyl R55 Claret). An original intake silencer was sourced and measured and a new one remanufactured in the same method.
    The Mars engines were sold from the factory minus the fuel tank, exhaust pipe and water cooling tank as the customer normally would have fitted these for the environment. Quite often the exhaust pipe would have come straight out of the engine and through the factory wall, and a 44 gallon drum would have served for a cooling tank.
    All engine bearings, rings and seals have been renewed with brand new factory specification replacements. The flywheels are as per original factory installation and had never been off the engine until the restoration.
    The tolerances between the flywheel and the crankcase were that fine that there were literally less than 1/8 " clearances so great care had to be taken to remove and reinstall these right the first time.
    As well as having the engine serial number stamped on the head, the flywheels, gibb keys and keyway in the crankshaft are all stamped with the engine serial number which showed an incredible attention to detail by the company.
    The injector side of the engine has an 32I on all its components where the other side has only 32 stamped.
    The oil seals on the crankshaft were the very first of the new modern type oil seals that we still use today.
    Mars were sure ahead of its time in 1942.
    The Pyrox injector pump was also fully re-kitted and tested. A new high pressure fuel line was made and everything just came together perfectly.
    Custom built fuel tank brackets were made and matched to fit with the engine with a 6 litre tank plumbed to gravity feed through a filter to the injector pump. Nice!
    A heavy duty custom built transporter of plate steel and C Channel was also fabricated in an industrial style of the period, and finished in a Penetrol finish to enhance the raw steel. Yes it is heavy.
    Check out the Mars Engine Codex website (still under construction) if you want to know more or would like to add to the knowledge base.

    I just love that engine. Great job on the restoration. On items that old a ''true to time'' restoration is a struggle on items that were common. I can only imagine how hard you all worked to bring that rare old engine back. Just everything trying to get specs having to build or pay for fabrication of parts. The thinking trying failing re-thinking inventing new avenues solving problem after problem just to get on to the next tier of problems. I truly respect the time dedication and rededication it takes to make a project like this happen. Every person after the first owner dreamed of that engine being what it is now. People gave up 40-50 years ago and you seen the job through today. I hope you really enjoy that engine you sure as heck earned it. Too say cool old just does not begin to describe this piece. That old engine really sounds great.

    Very nice job on the engine! I'm wondering if you are "short circuiting" the cooling tank by not having the lower cold water line to the engine come off the bottom of the tank?? The coldest water in the tank should be at the very bottom and it would make sense to tap the tank there. Taping off the bottom would force the entire surface of the tank to be used for cooing and not just the top half.

    • @AkubraHatman
      @AkubraHatman  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jim, the bottom pipe actually goes into the tank around a third of the way from the bottom but once it goes into the tank it has an elbow inside that takes the pipe to the bottom to draw the coldest water. Hope that makes sense mate. Cheers. :)

    Are those barrels ever going to fill?

    • @AkubraHatman
      @AkubraHatman  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No, the barrel is set up on a recirculating system where he water is taken out the bottom with a 3 " hose which goes 3 feet along the ground back into the centrifugal water pump. :)

    That water in reservoir for cooling engine,how hot does it get after longer running ?,as i not see there is any fans or something to cool it down.What is normal water temperatures for that engine to running all day long ?.

    • @AkubraHatman
      @AkubraHatman  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi mate, the cooling tank is right next to the engine. The engine can run for around 7 hours before the water temperature gets to be very hot and even then it is ok to keep going, although we have not run it longer than that yet.
      Cooling is achieved by convection cooling. The bottom pipe draws the colder water from the bottom of the tank and once it has gone through the engine the warmer water goes out the top pipe to the top of the tank and then is drawn down through the coller water to the bottom and so on.

    ?

    • @AkubraHatman
      @AkubraHatman  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi mate, the drum that you can see the water flowing into is not a cooling tank. It is separate. The cooling tank for the engine is beside it and the engine will run for 7 hours straight before the water gets anywhere near boiling. :)

      You have to bleed it first, so that it will prime the system, otherwise you will dry start it and badly damage it. However, this only needs to be done if you replace the Untagleeden bearings.
