The saying to help know your crows from your rooks is If you see a crowd of crows they are rooks If you see a solitary rook it’s a crow. Also the numerous nests are rookeries because rooks like to live together. If you see a huge flapping black harbinger of doom it’s a raven. My great grandmother had a pet crow. Very clever birds. I watched a crow teach a young magpie how to angle itself just right to get at some fat balls I had hung out. End of ramble 😂
Interesting. I’m in the States, Oregon, and they tell us that if it id solitary, it’s a raven and if it is a crowd, it is a crow. We have crows - lots and lots of them here. A handful keep an eye on our yard since my husband drops off uneaten food for them on the way to the compost. And, @Gaynor, I as at our kitchen table the last snow and one of the crows posed for me for some time upon one of the bird feeder hooks. The only thing I had was my pen and sketchbook and I love the results. The scratchiness of the pen left a lot of white space, mimicking the shine of the feathers. Love it.
Hello Gaynor, another treat. I want to be a stowaway please. You go to some lovely places that obviously inspire you. You then put your sketchbooks to such good use. Can’t wait for next week to have a more in-depth look. Have a lovely week developing your ideas, now you are back home. Thanks for sharing.💐
Absolutely love this video Gaynor, your wobbly car sketches ( I would be car sick trying to do this), the crows and trees the gorgeous cheese plant leaves, thankyou so much for your wonderful videos. I can't tell you how much I look forward to Thursday mornings although I am away on hols at the moment and had to wait until today (Friday), have a lovely week xx
Morning Anita, what a lovely comment to start my day, so a real heartfelt thank you. I hope you are having/had a lovely holiday and a great weekend to come 😍
Thank you, Gaynor, I so loved the crow! Continue to value and look forward to these weekly creative offerings 🙏btw, Sandi Hester here on TH-cam also does some great, loose, birds in her sketchbooks 😊 all best wishes
Fantastic video! Awesome work on your road trip. LOVE the tree with crow, love the crows, love the cheese plant etc., love love love! ❤️ I’ve just come back from France ( the south west) Now I want to go see the mountains because of your video. Spent my time photographing Chateaux and sketching and painting these Amazing buildings. Such fun! Love your videos ❤️
Wonderful tour, thanks for that bit of filming! Don’t like crows, they are so loud and boss the other birds around…but you made them appealing for sketch book subjects! You’re amazingly creative!
Great news Denise, you must be thrilled. I am going to trial the 'sketchbook pages' idea next week, so please let me know what you think. Have a fantastic weekend 🥰
@@gaynorpattle I’m looking forward to christening my journal although I did take your advice and make some marks on the first page which puzzled my 8 year old grandson
I just watched the trip to Spain from 9 months ago with using your sketchbook. Inspirational and spurning me on, I've been carrying my little sketching kit(a gift from my son), not so little 6x10 inches, to work with me with the intention of sketching when I take my lunch break. People do stop and chat and watch, like you I am kind of shy about that happening. I feel my sketching is a time for me to work out my developing sketching skills. LOL I'll continue to carry it with me and try to use it on the days I work, I'm not always diligent about drawing. I live in Saugatuck, Michigan, which is a Vacation destination on Lake Michigan, so we are very busy from the end of May until the Middle of August. Come visit sometime, we have visitors from all over the world and we have a very active Art Community- this area is called the Inland Artist Coast.
Love this! What an adventure to go on with you! I love Lord M’s thoughts on Rooks in Masterpiece Theater’s Victoria, and thought they are rooks! Your sketches with glazes are wonderful! Thx for the advice on pens and smaller sketchbooks!
Ah that was great! Thanks for sharing that with us it seemed so child out and really beautiful, it’s fun to see your excitement after your trip! You seem to have got loads from it! And yea it’s always lovely to get back home to the things you love with fresh eyes and new appreciation of the little things haha….. gosh I’m talking myself into needing a lil break myself lol….. love your vids and enthusiasm! Perfect! 👌
Thankyou for sharing your road trip and sketchbook ❤ I love those mistletoe ‘balls’ in the trees too, but yes, it is a shame that something so pleasant to look at is in fact a parasite 😱 They seem to grow back as fast as we can strip them of some trees in our garden. Loving the permanent marker and glazing! Thankyou for tip re Jim and Nancy Moir - will see if I can pick it up on ‘catch up’. Think Artgraf tailor shapes would be useful to travel with too - it looks like you can use the edges to draw with and use them as watercolours too - very intense and ‘tho not many colours, it looks like they do a lovey earth colour set - just have to find a way to justify spending yet more money on yet more art supplies 😉🙄😊
Wow Gaynor! There was a LOT packed into this one - but somehow it made beautiful sense - as it always does. I so appreciate your enthusiasm and how you fully engage with your surroundings wherever you are. I'm still struggling with being disciplined with the sketchbook, yet I get motivated each week when you share your journey. Be well!
Hi D C, I hear what you are saying about sketchbook ! Thank you for taking time to leave such a great comment - these words really give me the encouragement to keep going 🥰 Have a great weekend
Thanks for sharing your road trip, it looked great fun and interesting. The buildings, scenery and shops looked lovely. The Jim Moir programme is really good, I loved his Curlew painting in the first programme. I have yet to watch the one with the Choughs but was lucky enough to watch a pair on the cliffs when visiting Cape Cornwall a few years ago. My painted covered sketchbook is continuing to grow with ideas and sketches. Thanks again for making Thursdays so inspiring. Enjoy the weekend. 😊🎨
Once again, thanks for sharing your trip. Would love to get to England but it’s not in the stars so I’ll just go site seeing with you. I did a whole sketchbook on crows. I drew all of them with FW inks and used the dropper from the ink bottle to sketch with. Great fun. Try it.
OMG LOVE your crow and/or raven, and/or rook! Such an honour to see inside the sketch book this week. My absolute favourite page was the tree + crow. I can see how you have been inspired from the (i forget the name!) artists you showed us last week.. absolutely love the blending of the intricate drawing with the bolder inky marks. Big big love 🧡🧡🧡
