this is the first english review I have seen of this machine. It boggles my mind that no big tech channels got an early review copy after seeing a dozen videos about the ASUS Strix with the 6800m from six months ago. Big fail on MSI unless they were deliberately wanted to hide performance
Excellent initial review. The inverted motherboard may be a turn off for many who want to upgrade it. The performance per watt ratio and battery life is pretty good

WoW! Quite a colossal usability failure in regards to some of those BIOS features. Personally, I love the idea of being able to completely disable (power off) the discrete GPU in the BIOS, as a lot of the time I need a powerful productivity laptop with decent battery life. Thanks for including the BIOS display options in the end of your video! Really hope you manage to get back in to your BIOS somehow (perhaps a BIOS reset on the mobo somewhere?).
I'm trying to understand something. People are saying there may be no MUX switch implementation possible with AMD's Smart Shift in an AMD CPU+GPU combination, yet we're seeing higher FPS when using the HDMI port, so obviously, there IS a way to bypass the internal GPU on the CPU. So how can it be impossible to have a MUX switch on all-AMD laptops?
TBH idk, I'm in Jarrod's tech discord and I asked him about it a while ago and he said he had asked AMD and they didn't give him a clear answer lol. Unfortunately I'm far from a hardware expert myself, but I guess the ultimate answer will be whenever someone reviews the legion with 6600m
Haven't looked at that configuration but the 5900HX is only a marginal step up from 5800H. It'll be better for like video editing and stuff but minimal gaming improvement. :)
AMD needs to upgrade to Thunderbolt 4. It's getting annoying at this point. Lack of TB4 /USB PD defeats the purpose of a thin & light gaming laptop like this. 2.7kg is unnecessarily heavy, a good GaN 100w USB C adapter would have been perfect.
A very good review. Sadly the ray trading is about right. On the 6800m (Asus AMD Advantage) ray tracing works…and works well……but no where near NVIDIA options. This is first Gen ray tracing. I am glad it comes with better ram though.
i just bought asus rog strix g15 advantage edition gl543qy-hf003t 2 weeks ago, it run far cry 5 with 30 fps on low setting. and on another game fps drop below 20 few time, still cant find out what is issues.
Is the Dedicated GPU showing up? Like if you hit CTRALTDEL and look at performance monitor, you should see 2 gpus one the integrated ryzen graphics card and the dedicated 6800m. Also in FC5 under settings there is an option I believe to choose between the dedicated or integrated graphics card. Check there and make sure the 6800m shows up and is selected
Lenovo legion 5 pro is much more powerful because it provides more wattage to it, has better display and ports. However the msi is more efficient and tends to be cooler because its overall an amd based architecture. If I was to choose, I would pick MSI, because it's design is great and ideal for students.

New amd cpu's are designed to run up to 105 degrees celsius, so 96°C is actually quite reasonable. The Omen 15 for example, runs up to 100°C before it starts throttling.
@@me-me3126 well said, yes different oems have different throttle limits. This one throttles at 96 very slightly in my testing, but can use max fans and it didn't throttle at all for me. Coolest ryzen I've tested is legion 5 pro and even it without cooling pad is like 86-low 90s while gaming
Why is this more expensive than the strix g15 6800m which is much better than this in cpu, gpu and everything that makes a laptop good is better on the strix, amd's pricing just doesn't make sense
Amd doesn't set the prices, the laptop manufacturer does. This laptop is more akin to a razerblade, it's 1.9kg and thin. So why is the razerblade with rtx3070 25% more than a Legion 5 pro with more powerful rtx 3070? Because you pay more for portability :p
@@grumblez yes but there should be a baseline price like the 3060 laptops don't cross the prices of 3070 laptops, if they're a bit worse all-around, only really premium laptops like razer blade and alienware are justified as they have extra features or build quality for the extra price

96°C is pretty normal for gaming laptops these days. These AMD cpus are allowed to run up to 105°C so there shouldn't be any problems with it staying at 90°C over prolonged periods, especially considering this is a pretty thin machine.
@@me-me3126 Ok no problem with temps, but If looking for this built in Linux you Will see that the smart shift doens't work very well on windows, so in windows the RX 6800M has a lot variable frequency, reach min's like 1300mhz. On Linux the min's stay at 1900mhz. If you watch the new video with no turbo boost you could see the GPU frequency was more stable and 1%low and 0,1%low more higher.
Yeah it's a big no no for me, I think I'll pass. AMD chips are not as durable as Intel in terms of dealing with heat and know when I heard it's paired with small fan and bad airflow that's a problem. Plus I was expecting it to be a bit cheaper since it's priced at the same price as Asus and Lenovo gaming laptop that are more Superio r than this. That's just my opinion
It actually runs cool at least the one I got at bestbuy for $1299. It came with far cry 6 and re village for free too. When I played far cry 6 on ultra settings the cpu stayed around 68°c and gpu 70°c on auto fans. In cyberpunk 2077 with cool boost on and ultra settings the cpu was suprisingly at 67°c gpu was 68°c also the ryzen 7 5800h has a max temp of 105°c and the Intel equivalent i7 11800h has a max temp of 100°c.

@@123Suryasis there's an option in advanced bios to disable integrated graphics. Which also disabled the screen
@@grumblez Reattaching antennae to the wifi card is one of my chief problems anytime opening a laptop. Its the hardest thing for me.

For video editing doesn't really matter, I guess 16x10 is nice, but for gaming 6700m is gonna be 30% or more better than 3050ti
