Very rich analysis. I love the contradiction of Judy being willing to change into a different person so Scotty loves her as herself

What points would you say best fit the third premise of the auteur thoery?

Hi Tom. That's a really good question. The 3rd premise is a tricky one (that's probably why I neglected to mention it!).
Essentially, as I understand it at least, Sarris is saying it's the director's personality / soul. It isn't a definable or tangible thing you can place your finger on. That's what gives it (according to Sarris) the mark of a truly great artist. So for instance, you could make a film that has all of Hitchcock's signatures in it, but it would ring hollow, or just seem / feel inauthentic and crucially not the real thing. So even if you are technically brilliant and do all of the style / surface level things that an artist does - it must ultimately have that soul / spirit that only a true artist can bring to a film to be considered the work of an auteur.
On a personal note, I feel that some directors miss that spark, even if they are technically good / have a distinguishable style e.g. David O. Russell - there's something about his films where it just seems hollow and empty. Whereas PT Anderson's films always feel so rich and glorious (to me at least).
So, pointing to a specific scene from 'Vertigo' that evidences the 3rd criteria / premise would always be subjective... for me I always think of the scene where Judy emerges from the bathroom, bathed in green light, styled as Madeleine - it just packs such a punch. For you it may be another moment though.
Sorry to be so vague and long-winded, but I hope that helps!
