Yesterday I read the 1st four chapters of Kalki's PS in English translation. Clearly kalki wasn't as good as dostoevsky, or conrad, and I wasn't impressed the author exposing his Vaisnava vs Saiva biases already in these chapters. Anyway, I want to read the rest of this book someday, and don't want to have images of the movie in my mind when I do. For me reading the book is much more important than watchin the movie by Ratnam. So I don't want to see the movie until I read the book.
Mani ratnam is a powerful stylist, his images stay in your mind longer, and that is his greatest streangth. Fron the teaser I am not impresssed with the acting talents in this movie, and I beleive Ratnam would rely on the star power of the actors to move the plot. I am not convinced that Mani Ratnam could communicate the psychological and emotional nuances of the charactors to his actors.
In the 4 Ratnam movies I have seen Nandita Das's charactor comes to mind. She didn't know the situation, and Mani either ddin't understand himself or didn't communicate well and both of them relied on a Muslim journalist from Sri Lanka to explain, and I beleive he was biased. So it wasn't the actress's flatness was her incompetance, it's mani' fault. As I said, he is a great stylist who obsesses about shot sequences, and loses sight of the main thrust and plot ot the plot. And yeah, this grand setting is not what Mani should focus on. He is good with simple, imtimate storylines.
