  • New Ford S-MAX ST Line 2019 Review Interior Exterior.
The S-Max that resulted has proven popular - not just with buyers who found its mix of practicality and well-groomed design appealing, but also with those of us who prefer to labour under the illusion that we might be piloting a large and high-sided saloon rather than a minibus.
This, of course, was the point. Ford, apparently with its tongue nowhere near its cheek, still prefers to call the S-Max a ‘sports activity vehicle’, a marketing misnomer conjured up mostly to differentiate it from the slightly larger (and less shapely) Galaxy it firmly considers an MPV.
The distinction, though, remains critical because once again the underpinnings - an evolution of the latest Mondeo’s modular platform - are shared between the two.
To bolster the car’s appeal, Ford hasn’t been shy with the application of technology. The S-Max is the first to use Ford’s adaptive front steering system and there’s now the option of intelligent all-wheel drive and an extensive line-up of overhauled or entirely new engines, including the latest range-topping 2.0-litre bi-turbo among a glut of similarly sized oil-burners, as well as the 1.5-litre Ecoboost petrol and its burly 238bhp 2.0-litre sibling.
ord has become one of the top brands that families go for, as many of its larger models offer great practicality and comfort in a stylish package.
But with SUVs taking more of the glory, MPVs are becoming less and less popular. However, Ford still offer three for customers to choose from.
With the C-MAX and Galaxy the bookends of the range, the S-MAX provides space for seven in a sleek shape and with a sportier setup.
But can the S-Max be a relevant competitor in the family car market? We get behind the wheel to find out…
Ford offers the S-MAX with four engine options - one petrol and three diesel. The 1.5-litre EcoBoost petrol is the entry level option it develops 163bhp and is paired to a six-speed manual and front-wheel drive - while the 2.0-litre EcoBlue diesel is the base unit for the other three options.
Provided in 148bhp, 188bhp and 237bhp guises, all can be paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission - while the 148bhp and 188bhp units are offered with front- or all-wheel drive. All of the units provide more than enough pull under acceleration and even when the car is loaded with people or cargo, the S-MAX doesn’t struggle.
To ensure that the S-MAX is great to live with, Ford has given the MPV a balanced ride that can soak up the bumps on all but the roughest surfaces and is settled when cruising on the motorway. Due to the size and weight of the vehicle though, body roll is present when you turn into the corner with vigour.
There’s no denying that the S-MAX is a big car and it definitely feels it on the road, with the width of the vehicle making travelling down narrow roads a bit awkward. But Ford has ensured that the S-MAX is fun to drive by giving it light steering that helps it feel smaller than it is, while also being very precise - making the car very easy to place on the road.
There’s seating for seven inside - although if you choose to use the rear seats, passengers won’t have that much room and boot space is incredibly limited as there’s only enough stowage area for a couple of bags. But with the rearmost seats folded into the floor, the boot area is rather substantial - and if you need the full range of storage space, folding the middle seats down will reveal a 2,000-litre area. The boot floor is also quite low, so getting things in and out of the back won’t be too difficult either.
Offered in four trim levels - Zetec, Titanium, ST-Line and Vignale - the S-MAX comes with a decent level of equipment from the base spec, with features such as 17-inch alloys, all-round parking sensors, dual-zone air conditioning, Sync 3 infotainment system with an eight-inch touchscreen, sports seats, keyless start and Quickclear heated windscreen.
Opting for Titanium gets you LED daytime running lights, chrome detailing, lane keeping assist, traffic sign recognition and cruise control with speed limiter - while the sporty-looking ST-Line option offers 18-inch alloys, sports suspension, heated front seats, a sporty bodykit and a perforated leather steering wheel.
Starting from £28,395, the S-Max offers a quality package that can be a compelling alternative to similarly capable SUVs - especially with the space for seven passengers. Although Ford’s other seven-seater, the Galaxy, offers a bit more passenger space, it costs £1,600 more and is only really worth the extra expense if you absolutely need the extra room.
As you would expect, the diesel engines provide better emission and fuel usage figures, with the 148bhp EcoBlue engine offering 132g/km CO2 and up to 53.3mpg - while the rest of the diesel range can get close to 50mpg. The petrol EcoBoost option is the most inefficient in the range, developing 169g/km CO2 and returning up to 38.7mpg.

Ever since my sisters were born we’ve been buying s-maxes on top of s-maxes and i’ve loved every single one! This year and model is out latest addition to the huge number of s-maxes we’ve had over the years, and i love it just as much as the first one!

Great video my friend, well done!
I have owned 5 Ford S-max's over the years, 3 in the past and I currently own a 2006 1.8tdci Zetec and a 2016 2.0 tdci S-max Titanium Sport 180. In my opinion they are the best MPV/7 seater cars you can buy! The new ST-Line is almost identical to my 2016 Titanium Sport 180.
After owning many of them, I have to disagree with your comments:
"Due to the size and weight of the vehicle though, body roll is present when you turn into the corner with vigour.
" and "There’s no denying that the S-MAX is a big car and it definitely feels it on the road, with the width of the vehicle making travelling down narrow roads a bit awkward."
My 2016 Titanium sport has very little body roll in corners thanks to the sports suspension and handles better than some standard cars. Lower spec models do have a bit of body roll, but not as much as you would expect being such a tall 2 ton vehicle. Maybe the ST-Line does not have the same suspension set up as the sport? After driving one every day, you quickly get used to the size and surprisingly it feels no larger than any other medium/large car or MPV.
I do agree that the steering is set up beautifully, not too light and not too heavy, with great feedback. The engines have plenty of power and I regularly get very good MPG figures.
With the rear 2/5 of the rear seats folded away, the boot is HUGE, but with all 7 seats up, boot space is a lot smaller (obviously) but its still larger than almost all other 7 seaters in its range.
I regularly carry 4 quite large adult passengers (5 including myself driving) comfortably. The rearmost seats are quite a bit smaller and were designed more with kids in mind. Leg room is the main issue as the floor is raised up due to the location of the fuel tank etc underneath. My teenagers use the 2 rearmost seats on a daily basis without too many issues.
I have no complaints on any of my S-max's apart from the newest one.
The auto start stop is a bit of a pain (it sometimes shuts the engine down just as I need to pull off) so I turn it off most of the time.
If its raining, sometimes the keyless entry doesn't work straight away. You don't need to get the key out of your pocket to unlock/lock the doors as the doors lock/unlock when you touch the top/inside of the door handle, which is fantastic 99% of the time, but when its raining it sometimes doesn't work the first time and you have to touch the handle a second or third time.
I have had a tiny issue with the upgraded Sony stereo system where the display hasn't turned on with the ignition. It only happened a hand full of times in 3 years and Ford couldn't find any faults. It just seemed to be a small software glitch.
None of the small issues greatly affected the way the vehicle performed and certainly haven't put me off buying another one.
In all fairness, these issues were not really a fault with the S-max only. As these same faults have been seen on other 2016 Ford models (Mondeo, C-max, etc) which use the same new equipment. They were the first vehicles to use the new technology, so I think that its safe to assume that they are just small bugs that Ford have ironed out since then with software updates on later models.
My 2016 S-max will be 3 years old in October and I WILL be trading it in for a newer model S-max. I love them and I doubt that I will buy another car as long as they are still producing the S-max.
Thanks for the great review SDA Dan Cars, I have liked and subscribed! Sorry my comment was so long! Keep up the good work!

    @SDA Dan Cars
I stumble upon this review: "The 19-inch alloys, low-profile tyres and sports suspension certainly help cement the ST-Line’s sporting style but they ruin the car’s ride. It’s abrupt, overly firm and downright uncomfortable on anything that isn’t snooker-table smooth. For a family car it’s just not good enough and I wouldn’t be surprised if it prompted some unpleasant reactions from any travel-sick passengers." Is this too harsh or it really lacks comfort on average roads?

What the heck is, "You can't explain good' I am of the opinion that the correct way is to say, "Your explanation was not good". Dunce, Mahmoud Karimi that is. Anyway, only today I looked at this same car in a Ford Garage when I was there to book a service time. I was very impressed with the amount of space in the car. I am presently driving a Ford Grand C Max with 2.5 seats in the back. This could be my next car.
