The best advice we got for getting through the airport is "Keep walking and don't stop until you see the sunshine".

The best way I have found to get through the gauntlet at the airport is after you push the button and get a green light walk up to the door get your phone out and start walking and talking like you are on the phone....works great

We have lived in Los Cabos for 4+ years and will be here forever. (1) Before moving here we had visited about 2 dozen Mexican and Caribbean places and you nailed it on the airport arrival salespeople. We think of it as a football line on the field, drop your shoulder and forge forward and do not make eye contact or speak with any of them. (2) If you are over 20 years old stay in San Jose del Cabo - true Mexican town, lots of 'non-spring breakish' bars and restaurants as well as culture. Can take taxi or bus once or twice to Cabo San Lucifer just so you can say you've been there and done that.

We fell for the airport “hustle “. We ended up getting stung with a 5 hour timeshare presentation with the promise of a sunset dinner cruise afterward. Until I finally yelled NO more. I was embarrassed but finally got them to stop. We are seasoned travelers, but were caught in a weak moment by transport company that we booked prior to trip. Just keep walking to your prearranged transportation.

Something else I'd like to add regarding the money. I've visited Mexico quite a few times, just to Puerto penasco. However one of the things that we like to do is to bring small bills. Many of the vendors do not have change. When you have a more accurate accounting of your bill, it's easier to pay and walk away.

In regards to money, I will usually take some pesos that you can get from your bank at cost with no commission charges. You can order Pesos or any currency from whatever country you travel to, thru B o A and most banks, just order it in advance. I believe Bank of America usually takes 2-3 business days to get it for you, and you can order it through the app.

Various banks have ATM networks where you don’t have to pay for fees when withdrawing local currency. For example, if you have Charles Schwab checking account, you can withdraw local currency at any ATM in the world and automatically get reimbursed for the fees. The exchange rate is usually very reasonable and is better compared to exchange kiosks. I normally only bring a small amount of USD cash just in case and then withdraw from ATM when I land at the airport or near my hotel/Airbnb. Agreed on the separating your money if you prefer to bring a lot of cash to exchange.

    • @dunningkruger3774

Go to a BANK to use the ATM. NEVER in a public place or market. "maybe" Costco, but be aware, there are scammers just waiting for you. 45 years in Cabo.

After my first trip to Los Cabos, I made some friends who live there, so whenever I go back I just let them know, and they pick me up. I always buy them lunch or dinner when they do at a place they recommend, and the food is not just great, it's also cheaper than any of the limo services to get from the airport to San Lucas.

one more tip, about the in room safe... google the brand and model once you're in your room and find out the default master code. Not all resorts bother changing it. If that's the case, obviously any hotel staff could get in, while most are honest hard working people, it only takes one, so if it's still on the default, CHANGE IT. and if you're worried about having changed it without them knowing, change it back when you leave.

Solid advice for those not familiar with Cabo or an resort town in Mexico. FYI, you may know this and it's not for everyone. Public transportation by city bus is available perhaps 50 yards away when you exit the airport. Look left and you'll see a trio of stairs heading down to the street with benches, some shaded, some not and you'll see the city bus sign there. They show up every 20 minutes or so but I've never waited more than 10. The cost was 80 pesos, $4 then which beats the heck out of the $50-$75 one can pay for private/semi-private transportation. Yes, it'll take an hour, perhaps a bit more traffic depending but it's fun! Taking your time and enjoying the sights along the way. And yes, it's very safe. I've done it 3 times, taking the bus back to the airport also.

Los Cabos has great water; falls in the mountains an hour north, travels by subterrenean rivers through granite sand to Los Cabos. The problem comes from the water storage tanks on the rooftops, big plastic barrels and the tops keep blowing off, so... birds, bugs, and the occasional drowned mammal.... In San Jose del Cabo, every morning a big water truck pulled up with a big hose to fill some modern rooftop storage over one of the most popular restaurants. New wells for filling those trucks cause controversy that the local residences don't benefit and have shortages. Los Cabos government is really... broken... corrupt? They fail most of the ISO standards for good governance. Los Cabos isn't really Mexico, the people have no culture, and hardly noticed when Vicente Fernandez died!

I will expand on tip number 10. I have been traveling to Cabo for over 20 years and sometimes two or three times a year. Your room will have a safe or the front desk will have lock boxes. Place ALL of your valuables in it. Passport, VISA, billfold, purse and anything else of value. There are PICKPOCKETS there. Put a small amount of money in your pocket to spend. When it is exhausted return to your room and restock your pocket. I keep Dollars in one pocket and Pesos in another. Cabo is a very safe and fun place to visit and I will be returning there again in April. Have fun.

    (3) When you go to a grocery store for those extra supplies for your room, the people bagging your stuff do NOT get paid. In fact they have to compete very hard to even get to be a bagger so they can earn tips, which is their only form of income to feed their families and survive. Please tip them well, a minimum of one dollar (20 Pesos equivalent) (4) If you use U.S. cash dollars literally anywhere you go the person/business you are paying gives you such a bad exchange rate it is the equivalent of them making 10-15%, which is you over paying by 15-20%. Before you leave for your trip check which international ATMs your home bank partners with and any grocery store in Los Cabos will have a row of 4-6 different banks ATMs. If you use the one your U.S. bank is affiliated with the fees are very low. And if the machine asks if you want to use their exchange rate, click NO! because it will also be terrible and then it will use the exact international currency exchange rate in NY at that moment. Also use Debit or Credit cards for anything you buy and state that you want to be charged in PESOS and the same NY exchange rate is applied. Otherwise the merchant takes their 10-15% for charging it in dollars.

Oh, another tip, Sharon, especially for first timers, dont flash your thick wallet
Or thick wad of bills. Use small bills and coins in different pockets. $20 bill is the largest bill you can flash. And dont be gruff with hustlers. Stay polite while saying no to offers. Realize tourists are natural shark baits. This is true in any country. Keep your wallets in your front pockets. Use only your cheapest watch when traveling (not more than $20 value).

Use pesos whenever possible, the exchange rate is favorable. Change your $100.00's at the Mega, or one of the other big markets. They have the official rate. Virtually any restaurant on Calle Miguel Hidalgo is a great alternative to the marina. Although the Crazy Lobster is kind of a waste.

I suspect things are the same on the other side of the continent in Cabo... They told us that if one of us tested positive, then you'd stay in the room you were in at a reduced rate for the quarantine period until you tested negative ... I'm not entirely sure anyone tested positive ever tho, lol... past that, we felt very safe and the check-in to return to US was uneventful with the negative test in hand...

I always love when a travel agent warns people not to go on time share presentations,I live here in Cabo, how my family started coming here was by buying a timeshare, which started with greed!we though it was good value for time spent.we ended with 2 resort timeshares, after vacationing for 21 years my family decided to buy a home, which we would never have considered if not vacationing on a regular basis in Cabo.the mexican people were always terrific,so now 67 yrs old I live here full time.travel agents don t want you to buy timeshare but rent your vacations so hence their warnings.going on a presentation is a choice.by the way right now it is safer here than the u.s.

I completely agree. Our first visit to Cabo was 2001 an we fell in love with Cabo. I purchased a timeshare then and have added another. It has allowed us to travel to Cabo and other destinations since. We currently spend 1 month a year in Cabo and will spend more in the future when retired. I’m 60 now so we’ve had 19 years of wonderful trips to Cabo. Been through high school and college spring breaks with daughter and now taking twin granddaughters and grandson. It’s not the cheapest way to travel but the people at our resorts know us now and always welcome us “home” when we arrive. We know Cabo like the back of our hand now and wouldn’t trade our visits there. It’s what works best for each person or family. Can’t wait to be back in February for two weeks.

I was there for 3 weeks. Playa Del Carmen is under construction they are working on 5th street. There is nowhere to park a rental near 5th street. because of construction. Bars and clubs are shut down Only restaurants with bars are open to midnight. I recommend staying in Cancun Hotel zone at the Westin they have great swimming pools and can be used late 10:00PM. Cancun shuts down at 4:00am near Coco Bongo alley its cracking all night after 11:00pm. Most other hotels shut down their pool at 6-7PM . Playa Del carmen is a great spot but its dead right now. Take your own snorkel gear, best plays to visit is Islas Mujeres, Hel-xa, Holbox, and Chichen-Itza witch is now open. Cozumel is so so if you rent a jeep.

If you are just going to chill and drink I would do Sandos Playacar its All inclusive and cheap right now. Its a huge resort with lots of swimming pools and their beach is perfect! Playacar is the spot to chill and drink. If you renting a car Sandos is perfect for the price their restaurants are super legit.

To correct one thing about the Peso or American money, you say American is accepted in almost all Mexico which is incorrect in some instances. The Riu Palace, Riu Santa Fe and Riu Hotel California do NOT accept U.S. dollars for payment when staying at their resorts. They will take credit/Debit or pesos. You can use U.S. dollars for all other things at the resort like at the gift shop or for tipping. So if staying at any of The Riu resorts make sure to have Pesos or Credit/Debit to pay for your stay. This was the only place where we ran into an issue of not accepting U.S. dollar.

Using ATM's are completely safe as long as it's connected to a bank, the only ones you don't want to use are the independent ones around the marina and downtown, always stick to the ones attached to a bank and remember when withdrawing funds, you will be withdrawing pesos. As an expat living in Mexico for the past 25 years, i highly recommend withdrawing money once you arrive because you always get the very best exchange rate verses whatever the local rate is. When grocery shopping or paying for excursions always try to use a credit or debit card and have them charge you in pesos. As for beach vendors, why would you tell people not to buy from them?? I'm 💯percent sure you wouldn't appreciate someone messing with your lively hood! This is how many people feed their families and you are over here telling people not to buy from them? Why? If you don't want to be bothered by vendors then go sit at another beach or just say "no thank you" Part of the experience of going go Mexico is shopping on the beach for trinkets. Same goes for any type of sales presentations... First of all, no one claims to be 15 minutes, they always say "90 minutes" which we all know they end up being longer however, this is also a person's lively hood! Its called Sales and marketing. Don't think you would like someone telling people not to book through you or follow you?!

    • @SharonatSeaTravel
      @SharonatSeaTravel  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Nickie, my point was that if you buy from the vendor's on the beach, even more will swarm you with requests to make purchases. Wait until just before you leave to make any purchases. (I believe that's pretty much exactly what I said in the video) As for sales presentations, I think you are referring to time share presenstations, as I was referring to all types of presenstations. And I didn't say ATM's weren't safe, I said you will get charged international fees so you should avoid them. Maybe you should give the video another watch.

These people are tourists, not travelers. They don't care about the locals. Travelers try to learn the language, customs, history. There's a couple good graphic images that describe the difference, or there's the Banksy street art mural of the two fat tourists in a rickshaw pulled by two malnourished young teens.

I have been going to Cabo many, many times in the past 23 years. I have learned from experience, Put all of your valuables into your room safe. Passport, visa, billfold and anything else of value. I put a couple of hundred dollars into my pocket and if and when I need more money I go back to my hotel and get into my wall safe and replenish my pocket. I have learned this the hard way.

You will never do that. That's what I do, I have to make big money on the flip or I am out. If you are determined to buy one wait till the last they will try and flip their own resale for cheap.

Cabo don't represent all Mexico, although locals are trying to make a living, so buy from them, better help local economy than big corporations, when you negotiate a price on something, what the person is asking you, is the fear price, but most of them rather sell it cheaper than don't sell at all, so don't be an ass and pay what you can afore, at the end of the day perhaps they need that couple of dollars more than you do. And don't use dollars, every place you go they will give a different exchange rate, so if you bring pesos, you will know for sure you are not paying an unfair exchange rate.
