I’m really not sure I understand the struggle with the verses and “not knowing where they begin”.
It’s simple, If theres a verse number in the margin, and a period within the line, then the verse starts after the period. If there’s no period, then there WILL be a comma somewhere, and so the verse will start after the comma.
So in other words, punctuation matters. If you see a verse number in the margin, and then see a period or a comma in that line, that’s where the verse starts. It’s really not that hard guys. :)

Thanks for the video. Per your comment at the end, I own both the ESV Quentel, ESV PSQ, and the ESV Treveris. They each serve their purposes, but I tend to use the Treveris as my every day and all purpose Bible. Although a minor adjustment at first, I do not mind having the verse numbers in the margin. I actually find this to be very helpful in reducing distractions while reading but also still allowing the Bible to be used in every day settings (that require at least some level of navigation tools). Again, since I use this as my EDC and all purpose Bible right now, I do find the concordance to be helpful to have in the back, and the maps are also helpful for this reason and for referencing quickly while reading. The last thing I will say about the Treveris is that I love the size. It is large enough to be a comfortable reader and small enough to be portable. Like you said, not for everyone out there, but for some, like me, it is extremely useable and a pleasure to work with overall.

Thanks for the fair and balanced review Beau. I have the Quentel and the Treveris. I prefer the more traditional 2 column format and overall look of the Quentel, but I also love the Treveris because it is different and challenges my traditional likes and dislikes. Also looking forward to the Stridon, but I’ll wait until they release it in the ESV next year.

    Thank you for the review!
I appreciate your honesty. I see your point regarding the maps and concordance. The 11 point font would be nice.
I have the Treveris in Calfskin and I love it. I am okay with the verses not places where we traditionally have them. Once I was reading 2 Peter and I was planning to only read one verse, and without noticing, I keep reading a couple of more verses and it turned out to be a blessing.
We have to keep in mind the verses are artificially placed. It is more like tradition for us at this point.

One of the things I think was said of the Treveris is that it is not a “reader’s edition” per se, but somewhere between a reader’s and a traditional single column without references-which is why the verse numbers are still on the side. I always appreciate back matter like concordance because it gives some substance to the back of the Bible when I am reading the New Testament.
I have the Quentel (Regular, wide margin, and PSQ) and the Treveris. I tend to use the Treveris for longer periods of reading. The Quentel is more of my study/preaching set.

    Great review. Fair minded.
    * I agree it’s odd why they’d include a concordance in a reader’s Bible. (Not to mention, in our day and age, do we really need concordances anymore since we have computers, the internet, etc. to search, especially in a reader’s Bible?) Regardless I’d much prefer they used the concordance pages for a bigger font or slightly thicker paper (gsm) if possible.
    * I actually don’t mind them putting the verse numbers out to the side, though in a reader’s Bible I’d prefer no verse numbers at all.
    * That said, I really like the Treveris ESV. I love the leather, the red drop caps, the overall design, leather, etc. I’m just torn between the Schuyler Treveris ESV vs. the Crossway Heirloom Heritage ESV. Hard to decide for me.

Hello Beau, Thank you for doing this review of the Treveris. I have looked at getting one of these because I love the full Yapp and the drop caps and the ESV translation. I also really like this color scheme of the black with all that beautiful red. SO VERY WELL DONE!!! It's just a beautiful Bible. However, I also do NOT like the verse numbers not actually indicating exactly where each verse begins. Ultimately, this is not a Bible that I would use. I agree with you completely about the pros and cons. I have preordered a Stridon and I am looking forward to the single column, verse by verse layout. It isn't nearly as beautiful as the Treveris, but I will enjoy studying God's word with it. Again, thank you for this great review. You confirmed my decision to give this one a pass.

This was a great review, Beau. Super helpful. When I eventually get my first Schuyler I am leaning toward the PSQ or Canterbury. I really want the drop caps to start each chapter, but I also want something small to take to church every week.

Beau, I got my KJV Firebrick Red Treveris 2 years ago and love it. Mine has a good thick leather cover so nothing shows through it like yours shows the edgeline. Mine doesn't have that spine issue at all either. Schuyler's black with red liner looks great, as always. Thanks for reviewing this one.

I agree. It’s a super nice edition, however It’s just not for me. I’m holding out for a red letter Stridon in NKJV. I know NKJV will probably come after ESV and KJV knowing Schuyler... Maybe we will see one by 2024? Would also love for RL Allan to do another run of NKJV but I’m not holding my breath. Thanks again for all the years of helpful reviews. Love my Quentel but I’m just a verse by verse format guy.

@Beau Tate - I know this isn’t related to the Traveris, but do you know if Crossway makes a true Thinline (Heirloom or other)that is printed by Jongblood with red letter text? I can’t find one. They’re all black letter text.

Fine review, sir. I’m mostly in agreement regarding the presence of the concordance/maps in this edition, but could also see them coming in handy at times during reading sessions where I’m using only one Bible. I’m debating whether the Traveris is for me or not. I like the overall idea of it, having a nice reading Bible all in one volume. I’m not crazy about the ghosting; in fact, I find ghosting quite annoying and even distracting oftentimes when using many Bibles. That’s one of the main reasons I will soon invest in a reader’s set such as the ESV six-volume. I really like the page layout in the Traveris. Very classy look.

I like the oxford hollow ridge and hope they continue it. When Chinese companies inevitably start making counterfeits it's those details that end up being where you spot the authentic. When you look at other markets rife with counterfeiting like rolex watches these purposeful imperfections allow one to spot a fake at a glance.

Great review Beau. I agree with you on the spine not looking very nice and the verse numbers whole heartedly. I have one bible in that exact format and looking for a verse is borderline agonizing. If your going to put the verse numbers on the side then yes, why not just make it a verse by verse where each verse starts a new line. That is my absolute favorite layout. I also don't understand Schuylers deal with not making more red letter editions and being so obsessed with with the thinner 28 gsm paper. The only Schuyler editions I'll currently buy are the wide margins because of their thick 40 gsm paper which is perfect. I do wish the font was a little bigger though but the size of the bible is absolutely perfect for me. I'll also buy the NIV's because they still use the 36 gsm on those. Probably because of the 30,000 or so less words used in that translation keeps the thickness down. I really love your videos and look forward to each one. Thanks and keep up the good work.

Yes, I'm waiting to preorder a Schuyler NIV Quentel in June (Yay 36 GSM). It will be a gift for my son's. birthday, so I am hoping for availability by the end of July. The reality is probably going to be much later though. I'm. torn between the black goatskin (with red!) and the marbled mahogany calfskin. Thoughts?

I'm with you! Actually, I wish that Schuyler would offer a full Yapp version of all their Bibles! I LOVE the Schuyler quality. (Allan does a really lovely full Yapp on the KJV Longprimer Sovereign 63, as I'm sure you know)

    • @skolsaw1080
      @skolsaw1080 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I actually have an Allan NKJV that Allan had done a few years back with large print. Paragraph format, no line matching so there is some ghosting, and no red letter, but still very nice. I believe it was a limited run they did with some book blocks that were made for Schuyler that Schuyler didn't like and passed on. So Allan scooped them up. Anyways if you can find one for a reasonable price try and get your hands on one. The only reason I grabbed one is because Allan were blowing them out for half price to try and get rid of them so I wouldn't pay to much for it if you are able to find one.

I have and enjoy the Treveris. I thought my first EB Bible would be a Quentel PSQ but I do prefer single column. I would probably still love the PSW, though. Just because the Treveris might be a reader's Bible doesn't mean you never want to refer to the concordance or maps. They would probably be missed if they weren't there. I like the verse number placement but I am not crazy about the caps. I had to adjust to 10pt as I never had a font that large. I don't think I would want 11pt as you suggested. I would love the ESV Stridon without the additional margin which makes it larger than the Treveris.
