I currently own 11 copies of the MacArthur Study Bible, both first and second editions, spread across 3 translations: NASB95, NKJV, and ESV. I also have three copies of the LSB MacArthur Study Bible on preorder, all in goatskin (black, brown, and navy). But I’m just a casual MacArthur supporter. 😉
Thank you, Bill, for an excellent review. I’ve already got one of these on the way but it’ll take a little while for it to cross the Atlantic. Glad to hear I made a wise purchase. After watching several other reviews, I’ve realised just how much MacArthur seems to draw a nasty reaction from other so called Christian TH-camrs. Even some of your comments wild!!!
Dr. MacArthur's study materials, including his Bible are fantastic resources for those of us that are not Master's Seminary trained personnel. I have the good fortune to own Logos Bible software with a generous package of resources, so that is my go to for study. But, I have relied heavily upon Dr. MacArthur's teaching. And, his study Bible is still on my study format in Logos. I will absolutely get the LSB version when it comes out. I really enjoy the new translation. Cheers!
I got the free copy from thier website to view and look at. If it fits what Im looking for, ill spring for a more durable copy. I really like Grace to You and John MacArthur, even though I dont share all the same opinions. He still a man of God and a very valuable Pastor.
I got my LSB MSB 2nd ed about a week ago, and in general I like it, but there are shortcomings. He really doesn't get into other ways that one might legitimately read the text (e.g. since he's a cessationist, the table with gifts of the spirit doesn't even include things like tongues), and I would have appreciated a general survey of what is included in theology, rather than his own "we teach..." theology lesson. Love the index, wish the concordance was complete, but I still like it more than the other study bible I have. I think people are also hearing too much about how accurately translated the LSB is. They still pick a traditional translation rather than what is strictly said (e.g. "worship" in the NT). I also think putting your own name all over the place (esp the signature on the back cover) is particularly gauche (some are of Paul, some of Apollos, and apparently, some of MacArthur, which he likes). It is a serious mistake to just accept some name with a bunch of hype attached to it. I don't find MacArthur to be particularly deep on the issues as said in the video, and he is certainly not infallible. Be discerning.
I just got my pre-ordered copy today. As far as I can tell, the study notes, charts, and maps seem to be identical. But it is a Beautiful Bible. I am glad I got it, as I enjoy reading the LSB translation. It feels a little smaller/lighter than my NASB Macarthur Study Bible.
I have a MacArthur Study Bible in ESV and I find it great especially for cross references. The concern I would have is that there would be a distinct bias towards dispensational premillennialism embedded in the translation. I would still buy his study bible and simply filter for differences in eschatology and dispensational vs. covenant theology. I am more into 1689 Federalism anyways. Typically I buy study bibles on Olivetree so I can use the bible text in one window and the notes in the other window, so I can mix and match however I want.
I always think there needs to be wisdom when you have a bible where the study notes are done by one person. And when reading a translation that was done by a very small amount of people who mostly all have the same train of thought and opinion. Personally I have yet to read a study bible that beats the ESV study bible. I have a John MacArthur bible coming so let’s see
Can you name a single textbook that you used in seminary without mentioning the author's name? Was your professor, who trained you, referred to without a name? Did you address them as P1, P2, etc.?
No. get the ESV Study Bible. Awesome notes which cite differing interpretations, excellent translations, superior introductions, and amazing color photos, maps, reconstructions, and charts.
Get both and add the CSB study Bible, which is also an excellent study Bible. There you will have three (esv, lsb and csb) good translations and different views of theology.
The LSB is a rework of the existing NASB 1995. It would be nice if the LSB went back to the roots for an entire translation- including the newly released direct New Testament writings in Hebrew- but it’s not.
@@user-or9cj3vk6t Except that isn't the full story. Never mind, give the translation team some time - you'll see in good time - and the Orthodox community will be blown away in God's timing. In the meantime, the LSB is a rework of the NASB.
I agree! The doctrine of God’s sovereignty, His and only His autonomous will, the bondage of all man to be to evil or good with no choice autonomously of ourselves outside of the resurrection of our spirit to life, that someone altered MacArthur’s work while he is still alive and right under his nose, is nothing but an amazing assessment. Every human being should be so glad that individual election depends on the individual and outside of a miraculous work of God, even though we are naturally bent towards evil. In fact, I think hating this doctrine so much to kick out those who believe it out of the Kingdom of God shows the intellectual and biblical integrity of this post. All people who believe in the sole authority of God to move man towards himself is just nonsense.
If John Calvin's interpretation and application of the sovereignty of God in salvation is "false and evil," do you think John Calvin is not saved at all? And by extension, also those who adhered to this "evil and false" teaching such as C.H. Spurgeon, Jonathan Edwards, R.C. Sproul, John Newton, John Owen, John Knox, and your Calvinist neighbor?
So you think that the pastor who teaches you can take the mark of the beast, and still have salvation is a good Bible commentary to read? Personally I will stick to the KJV, and stay away from reprobate teachings
@DrBillRoach I love the Thou Shall Bible. I don't know what your Doctorate is in, but it sure isn't theology. Jesus said those who don't fillow HIS COMMANDMENTS, don't love Him. So I do follow His COMMANDMENTS with a joyful heart. And those who think they can easy believeism will perish
WELL DONE & WELL SAID !!!

'Word for word' is a sales point. Language doesn't work like that. If you want actual word for word, buy an interlinear
